Some newer Windows installations use a Windows Driver Store package instead. The exact path varies by Windows release, architecture, servicing state, and the driver package installed on the computer.

Public file records identify exports including FaxSendWizard and FaxFreeSendWizardData. Those exports indicate that the DLL is used by fax functionality, but they do not prove that the DLL alone is defective when Windows reports an error.

On Windows Server, related components can be installed with the Fax Server role. On desktop Windows, the relevant component may instead be Windows Fax and Scan or the Print Fax Scan Feature on Demand. These are related contexts, not interchangeable names for one single installation package.

What causes the error?

The most common causes are:

A Windows upgrade or feature change can expose an old printer utility that expects a component no longer installed. Similarly, removing a printer through Settings may leave a dependent utility or driver behind.

Do not assume that a message naming fxswzrd.dll identifies the only damaged file. The parent driver package, Windows servicing store, or a dependency may be the real problem.

Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and test the original program

Start with the fastest checks.

1. Save your work and restart Windows.
2. Open Settings.
3. Select Windows Update.
4. Select Check for updates.
5. Install available updates.
6. Restart again if Windows requests it.
7. Open the program that produced the error.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged Windows component. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
6. Enter this command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Press Enter.
2. Wait for the operation to finish.

Do not close the window while DISM is working. It may appear to pause for a while. A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully.

Run SFC

After DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it completes, then test Windows Fax and Scan or the affected printer utility.

Possible SFC results include:

• Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the failing program.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, review the CBS log, and continue with the repair-source procedure below.
• Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart Windows and run Command Prompt as administrator again.

Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to tell which component changed when several repairs are attempted. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a valid repair source. The source should match the installed Windows edition, language, and build as closely as possible. Do not point DISM at a random folder copied from another computer.

After the source-based repair completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test again.

Fix 3: Reinstall Windows Fax and Scan or Print Fax Scan

If Windows component repair does not restore the file, the fax feature may have been removed or become unavailable.

Reinstall through Settings

On supported Windows 11 installations:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Select Optional features.
4. Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
5. Search for fax.
6. Select Windows Fax and Scan or the available Print Fax Scan feature.
7. Select Next.
8. Select Install.
9. Restart Windows after installation completes.

Feature names and availability vary by Windows edition and build. If the feature does not appear, that does not prove the computer is infected or that the DLL must be downloaded. The edition, organization policy, servicing source, or installed Windows release may not offer the feature in that interface.

Check the capability from Command Prompt

Open Command Prompt as administrator and list available capabilities:

DISM /Online /Get-Capabilities

Look for a capability containing Print.Fax.Scan. Where supported, install it with:

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0

The capability is not available on every edition or build. If DISM reports that the capability cannot be found, use the Optional Features page and confirm the installed Windows edition before trying another repair source. After installation, open the Start menu and search for Windows Fax and Scan. If the application opens without the DLL error, the feature repair worked.

Windows Server

On Windows Server, the relevant component may be installed through the Fax Server role:

1. Open Server Manager.
2. Select Manage.
3. Select Add Roles and Features.
4. Continue through the wizard until Server Roles.
5. Select Fax Server.

Because fxswzrd.dll can be found in Windows spool-driver directories, the driver package may be the actual failure. This is especially likely when the error appears only after connecting a particular printer or opening that printer’s fax utility.

Identify the affected device

1. Press Windows key + X.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Printers.
4. Also check Print queues, Imaging devices, and Other devices.
5. Look for a warning icon or the fax-capable multifunction printer.
6. Right-click the device and select Properties.
7. Read the Device status message under the General tab.
8. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and driver details.

If the error occurs only with one printer, record its exact model and Windows architecture before downloading a replacement package. A generic printer driver may print successfully but omit fax functionality.

Remove the old device

1. Disconnect or power off the printer.
2. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
3. Select Uninstall device.
4. If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to reinstall the complete package.
5. Select Uninstall.

Install the correct package

1. Download the current driver package from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
2. Select the exact printer model.
3. Select the installed Windows version and architecture.
4. Prefer a package that explicitly includes fax support if faxing is required.
5. Run the installer as administrator when requested.
6. Connect the printer only when the installer asks.
7. Restart Windows.
8. Test printing, scanning, and fax functionality separately.

Historical records show both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of this component. Never copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver package or use a file from a different Windows build. The correct driver installer should place the matching files in the correct package location.

Manually checking dozens of driver versions can be tedious, particularly after a Windows upgrade. Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

3. Select Protection history.
4. Search for an entry involving fxswzrd.dll.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is commonly suggested by generic DLL troubleshooting pages, but it is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.

Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. The publicly documented exports for fxswzrd.dll identify fax-wizard functions, not a documented self-registration entry point. Registering it is therefore not an appropriate first-line repair.

Do not run commands such as:

regsvr32 fxswzrd.dll

Why downloading fxswzrd.dll is unsafe

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL archive and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a spool-driver directory, or an application folder.

• The DLL may not match its parent driver package.
• A dependency may still be missing.
• Windows servicing may replace or reject the manually copied file.
• The download may be modified or malicious.
• The file may be placed in a directory where Windows does not expect it.

There is no verified official Microsoft page offering fxswzrd.dll as a standalone download. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM component repair, Windows Optional Features, the Windows Server role installer, and the exact printer manufacturer driver package.

If the error persists

If DISM, SFC, feature repair, and driver reinstall do not solve the problem, narrow down whether the failure is global or application-specific.

Check the file path and event details

If a copy of the file exists, note its full path without moving it. A normal spool-driver path is more relevant than a copy in a temporary or unknown application directory.

Open Event Viewer:

Try System Restore

If the error began after a driver or feature change and a suitable restore point exists:

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Create a restore point.
3. Open the result.
4. Select System Restore.
5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
7. Complete the restore.

Back up important work first. System Restore does not replace a complete backup and may remove recently installed drivers or applications.

Perform a Windows repair installation
