Neither G-SYNC nor FreeSync is universally better. Both are variable refresh rate (VRR) technologies designed to reduce screen tearing and stutter by coordinating a display’s refresh behavior with the frames a GPU renders. The better choice is the monitor that works with your GPU and connection, has a suitable VRR range, and delivers the resolution, refresh rate, image quality, and price you want.

What G-SYNC and FreeSync do

With VRR, a display can adjust its refresh timing to follow the GPU’s changing frame rate. This can make gameplay look smoother when frame delivery varies, instead of forcing the display to refresh at a fixed rate that may not line up with rendered frames. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as technology that “matches the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU frame rate” in its Control Panel Help. AMD’s FreeSync technology page explains that FreeSync uses standards including DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync and HDMI Variable Refresh Rate.

FreeSync and DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync

AMD FreeSync is a technology and certification program. DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync is an industry-standard feature of a DisplayPort link that enables dynamic refresh; AMD describes it as one component used by technologies such as FreeSync. VESA AdaptiveSync certification and AMD FreeSync certification are separate checks, so one does not automatically establish the other.

G-SYNC and G-SYNC Compatible

“G-SYNC” can refer to NVIDIA’s processor-equipped displays, while “G-SYNC Compatible” refers to displays without NVIDIA G-SYNC processors that NVIDIA has validated for a baseline VRR experience. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC product information describes G-SYNC Compatible displays as providing a “good, basic” VRR experience. The label therefore does not mean that every monitor sold with an adaptive-sync feature has been validated by NVIDIA.

How the tiers compare

The certification names are not a shared ranking system. Compare the specific features each vendor documents for the monitor, rather than assuming that similarly worded tiers are equivalent.

Program or tier What the vendor describes What to verify on the exact monitor
AMD FreeSync AMD’s tier table lists tear-free experience, low latency, and Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) for its monitor tiers. Certification, VRR range, connection, and whether the model’s documented features meet your needs.
AMD FreeSync Premium AMD’s support guidance says Premium requires at least 120 Hz at minimum Full HD resolution and LFC. Confirm the model’s resolution, refresh rate, LFC support, and the specifications for the display type.
AMD FreeSync Premium Pro Adds AMD FreeSync HDR; AMD’s support guidance also describes low latency in SDR and HDR and HDR certification. Check the monitor’s actual HDR performance and listed specifications; the tier name alone does not establish image quality.
NVIDIA G-SYNC Processor-equipped tier; NVIDIA describes full VRR range and variable overdrive. Confirm the exact model, its supported range and interfaces, and which features are present.
NVIDIA G-SYNC ULTIMATE NVIDIA describes it as a processor-equipped G-SYNC tier. Check the product’s current specifications and features; NVIDIA notes that not all features appear on every display.
NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible Processor-free displays validated by NVIDIA for a basic VRR experience. Check NVIDIA’s model list, including the exact model name, supported range, interface, and driver notes.

AMD’s tier details are on its FreeSync technology page and FreeSync support page. NVIDIA’s descriptions and model information are on its G-SYNC product page and G-SYNC monitor specification list.

What LFC means

Low Framerate Compensation duplicates frames when a game’s frame rate falls below a display’s minimum VRR frequency, allowing the display to refresh within its supported range. AMD says LFC is required for FreeSync Premium and Premium Pro.

Does FreeSync work with NVIDIA GPUs?

Sometimes, but a FreeSync label alone does not guarantee support for every GeForce card, monitor, port, and driver combination. AMD says GeForce 10-series and newer GPUs that support DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync are expected to work, while advising users to check with the GPU manufacturer. NVIDIA separately publishes a list of G-SYNC Compatible monitors. Check the exact monitor model against NVIDIA’s list and confirm the intended GPU output and connection before buying.

How to enable VRR

On an AMD Radeon system

  1. Connect a compatible Radeon GPU to a FreeSync display using a connection supported by that monitor.
  2. Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) and enable FreeSync. Some monitor presets may disable it.
  3. Install or open AMD Software, then check the FreeSync status or tier and the reported refresh range. AMD provides setup guidance in its FreeSync support page.

On a GeForce system

  1. Connect the display to the NVIDIA GPU and use a port and connection supported for VRR by that monitor.
  2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and enable G-SYNC.
  3. Under Monitor Technology, choose G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible as applicable. NVIDIA’s setup guidance covers the control-panel option.

DisplayPort and HDMI capabilities vary by monitor model. The supported VRR range can also differ by port, so consult the monitor’s specifications for the exact connection you plan to use.

Finally, select the maximum 165Hz refresh rate in your computer's advanced display settings.)

How to choose between two monitors

Compare the display itself, not just the sync branding. Work through these checks for each candidate:

  1. GPU fit and certification: Check whether the exact model is listed for NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible use, AMD FreeSync certified, or both. A certification for one GPU ecosystem does not automatically establish compatibility with every other one.
  2. VRR range and LFC: Find the minimum and maximum refresh rates supported through your intended port. Check whether LFC is documented where it matters to you.
  3. Resolution and maximum refresh rate: Choose for your preferred resolution and the frame rates your system can reasonably render. A high maximum refresh rate alone says nothing about image quality or compatibility.
  4. Panel and HDR performance: Compare contrast, brightness, color, response behavior, and HDR performance independently of the sync label. Certification does not make different panels equivalent.
  5. Connection and setup: Confirm the GPU output, monitor port, cable path, current driver, and relevant monitor OSD settings.
  6. Price and warranty: Compare the complete offer and warranty terms for the specific product and seller.

For a GeForce build, a monitor on NVIDIA’s current G-SYNC Compatible list is the clearest validation signal. For a Radeon build, check AMD FreeSync certification and the monitor’s documented range. If using GeForce with a FreeSync display that is not on NVIDIA’s list, verify the exact GPU, monitor, port, and driver combination rather than assuming support from the FreeSync label.

What the old NVIDIA validation statistic does—and does not—show

On May 27, 2019, NVIDIA reported that 28 of 503 tested VRR monitors received G-SYNC Compatible validation in its first-phase test sample. It said 273 failed because of insufficient VRR range and another 202 because of image quality or other issues. This is a dated NVIDIA report about that specific sample, not a current estimate of the share of adaptive-sync monitors that are compatible. It also does not establish that one technology is better across today’s monitors. See NVIDIA’s 2019 announcement.

So, which is better?

For most buyers, the best choice is the monitor with verified support for their GPU and connection, the VRR range and refresh rate they need, and the stronger overall panel and HDR performance at a suitable price. G-SYNC’s processor-equipped and Compatible tiers differ, just as AMD’s FreeSync tiers differ; neither brand name alone proves superior image quality. The official materials describe vendor features and certifications, but do not establish a current independent head-to-head result showing that one technology produces better images across monitors.
