Their case for independence was that it lets the company choose its partners and working methods. Those are the speakers’ views—not independent evidence that players typically earn money, that assets work across games, or that Gala’s claims about its business have been verified.
What Gala Games said about NFT games and art
Jason Brink, identified by GamesBeat as Gala Games’ president of blockchain, and Sarah Buxton, identified as its COO, discussed “The Crossover between NFT Games and Art” at GamesBeat Summit Next. Brink called the period “a watershed moment in gaming and in the history of gaming.” The interview was published November 11, 2021, and updated June 18, 2025. GamesBeat’s report is the source for the remarks described here.

Brink presented blockchain-based game assets as a possible way for players to own digital items and use them in games. He also discussed play-to-earn potential. Buxton emphasized the combination of creative work and digital ownership, and described Gala’s approach as giving developers room to create. The interview captures what the executives argued; it does not establish that a player can use an asset in multiple games, retain access regardless of a platform’s decisions, or reliably make money.
Ownership, utility, and earning are different claims
The interview’s ideas are easier to assess when separated into distinct questions. These are analytical distinctions drawn from the speakers’ claims, not tested results.

| Question | What the speakers argued | What the interview does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Player ownership versus platform dependence | Brink described NFT assets as a possible form of player ownership. | It does not document how ownership would work for a specific item, whether an item remains usable if a game changes or closes, or whether control is independent of a company’s services. |
| Art versus in-game utility | Buxton framed blockchain games as bringing creative work and digital ownership together; Brink also discussed using items in games. | It does not demonstrate a particular asset’s functionality, portability, or ongoing support. |
| Potential earnings versus entertainment | Brink discussed play-to-earn utility as a possibility. | No typical player earnings, earning rate, or independently documented outcome is provided. The interview is not evidence of income for players. |
| Creative freedom versus commercial constraints | Buxton said Gala’s approach gives developers room to create. | The interview does not measure how much creative control individual developers have or compare their experience with other publishers. |
| Decentralization versus environmental cost | The speakers acknowledged uncertainty about blockchain’s environmental cost and the need for greener solutions. | No energy-use measurement or comparison is provided, so the interview cannot show the environmental impact of a particular game or system. |
Why Gala called independence a superpower
Buxton described independence in practical terms: the company could choose its partners and decide how to work. “What’s really nice about that is we don’t have to do what anybody else tells us,” she said. That is the company’s rationale for independence, not an independent assessment of its finances or decision-making.
The GamesBeat report also includes company assertions about funding and profitability. It does not provide independently documented figures that would verify those assertions, so they should be understood as claims attributed to the company rather than established financial results. Independence may give a company latitude, but the interview does not show that it guarantees creative success, financial stability, or a better experience for players.

What the current Gala Games platform shows
Gala’s current official launcher presents a catalog of digital games and describes a platform for creating and publishing browser games. That is present-day platform context, not proof that the products, strategy, or business model are unchanged from the 2021 interview. The launcher can help readers see what Gala presents today; it does not substantiate the interview’s claims about ownership, earnings, or company finances.
