You do not need Thunderstore Mod Manager installed to use Gale. Before downloading, confirm that Gale supports your exact game and that its setup path matches your operating system and game version.
What Gale does
Gale manages mods and their dependencies through separate profiles, so you can organize different mod setups without changing the base game files. It uses Thunderstore’s database and provides controls to download, install, update, remove, and launch mods. The project README claims support for 150+ Thunderstore and Hexium games; that is the project’s own coverage figure, not an independently audited count. The Gale wiki says the app links mod files between profiles rather than keeping a separate copy in each one, and describes the app as about 15 MB. Those are project documentation statements, not independent measurements; app size can vary by version and operating system. Gale feature documentation
Profiles, settings, and launching
- Profile exchange: Import or export profiles by code or file. Gale’s exported profiles are compatible with r2modman and Thunderstore Mod Manager, making it possible to move an existing setup or share one across those managers.
- Configuration: For supported mods, the in-app config editor can present settings as checkboxes, sliders, and fields instead of requiring you to edit raw text files.
- Modpacks: Export a profile as a modpack and upload it to Thunderstore. Uploading requires a Thunderstore account and a free API token.
- Launch options: Launch through a game platform or directly from the executable; Gale also offers options for multiple instances and launch delays.
- Migration: Gale can detect existing r2modman and Thunderstore Mod Manager installations to help transfer profiles.

Is Gale a good fit compared with other mod managers?
Gale is worth considering if you want profile management for a Thunderstore- or Hexium-supported game, especially if you value an in-app config editor, modpack export, or profile migration. Its profile import and export support gives it a practical point of comparison with r2modman and Thunderstore Mod Manager. The available sources do not establish that Gale is faster or universally better than either alternative, so choose based on your game, operating system, and workflow rather than the project’s qualitative speed claims.

A September 2026 PC Gamer Valheim guide lists Gale and r2modman as options, and its author says they use Gale with Thunderstore and Hexium downloads. That is one editorial example, not a compatibility test or a recommendation for every Valheim player. PC Gamer’s Valheim mod guide

How to download and install Gale safely
- Open the official Gale repository or the project’s Thunderstore page, then check the current release and installation instructions for your operating system.
- Confirm that your game is supported and review any platform-specific setup guidance before installing.
- Choose the package for your system. The README lists Windows MSI installers and Linux routes including AUR, Debian .deb, Fedora .rpm, Flatpak, and AppImage.
- On Arch Linux, follow the project’s instruction to update Gale through AUR rather than using the in-app updater.
- After installation, create or import a profile for the game, add the mods and dependencies you want, and use Gale’s launch controls to test the setup.
The Gale project identifies GitHub and Thunderstore as its official download sources and warns that galemodmanager.com is unofficial and severely outdated. Do not treat that site as an official installer source. Gale repository and installation instructions

Thunderstore Mod Manager is not required
Gale uses Thunderstore’s database; it does not require the Thunderstore Mod Manager app to be installed. It can also detect existing installations of that manager or r2modman for profile transfer. Gale FAQ, updated September 24, 2026

Windows: app closes or remains in the background
The official FAQ identifies Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime as a possible missing prerequisite when Gale closes or remains running in the background. This is a documented troubleshooting possibility, not a universal cause of startup problems. Gale FAQ
Linux: native Steam games and other documented cases
For native Steam Linux games, the FAQ says manual setup may be required and identifies BepInEx as the only supported loader in that specific native-Linux case. It also gives separate workarounds for Flatpak Steam and for Windows games run on Linux. Follow the FAQ’s instructions for the matching setup; these limits should not be generalized to all Linux games. Gale FAQ

If a modded game will not launch
Check that the profile uses the right game and mods, then follow Gale’s troubleshooting guidance for your operating system and launch route. A supported game count alone does not establish that every combination of game version, loader, platform, and mod will launch without extra setup. Gale FAQ
