Yes. Game Freak said a third party accessed one of its servers in August 2024, and the company disclosed the incident in October. It confirmed that names and company email addresses associated with 2,606 employees and contract workers were exposed. Separately, outlets reported that alleged game-development files were circulating online; Game Freak did not verify those files or their scope in contemporaneous reporting.
What Game Freak confirmed
In a statement dated October 10, 2024, Game Freak said unauthorized access by a third party led to the exposure of personal information. The company identified the affected information as names and company email addresses for 2,606 employees and contract workers, including former employees. It said it was contacting affected people individually.

The company also said it had rebuilt and reinspected the affected server and was strengthening its security measures. Its translated statement, reproduced by Nintendo Life on October 13, 2024, said: “Game Freak Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Satoshi Tajiri; hereinafter referred to as ‘our company’) has discovered that personal information of employees and others was leaked in connection with unauthorized access to our server by a third party in August 2024. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to all involved.” This is a translation of the company’s statement, not an original English statement.

What was in the Pokémon leak?
The answer depends on which material you mean. Game Freak confirmed exposure of employee and contractor information. Separately, news coverage described alleged development material circulating online, including source code, artwork, design documents, and other files. Those reports are not the same as a company confirmation that the files were authentic, complete, or obtained in this incident.
| Claim or material | What was established in October 2024 |
|---|---|
| Names and company email addresses | Game Freak said this information tied to 2,606 employees and contract workers, including former employees, was exposed. |
| Game source code, artwork, design files, and other development material | Reported by outlets as circulating online; Game Freak did not authenticate the material in the contemporaneous coverage reviewed. |
| Unannounced projects, future hardware, or the alleged size and full contents of a data dump | Not confirmed by Game Freak in the contemporaneous reporting. Claims about these topics should be treated as unverified reports, not official announcements. |
The Record from Recorded Future News, reporting on October 14, 2024, said the authenticity of purported development leaks remained unclear and that Game Freak had not commented on whether unreleased projects had been leaked. That distinction matters: reporting that files are circulating does not establish that every claimed file is genuine or that it came from the confirmed server breach.

What the incident response means for affected people
Game Freak said it was contacting people whose information was affected and described rebuilding and inspecting the server, alongside additional security measures. The confirmed exposed fields were names and company email addresses; the company statement did not list passwords, financial details, or other personal-data categories as exposed. Do not infer that such information was part of the confirmed exposure from the broader online leak claims.

Game Freak develops Pokémon games, a major global franchise. The Record reported that The Pokémon Company had said more than 480 million Pokémon games had been sold worldwide as of 2024. That figure is franchise context, not a measure of the breach or of leaked files.
