Start with this diagnostic checklist
game_sa.dll is a Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas client module, not a Windows file. If game_sa.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, the problem is usually an incomplete MTA installation, a missing 32-bit dependency, antivirus quarantine, or an incompatible GTA: San Andreas setup.
Before changing anything, check:
- Which program fails: the expected program is Multi Theft Auto: San Andreas, commonly called MTA:SA.
- When it fails: before MTA opens, while loading a server, or after you are already in-game.
- Where the file should be: inside the MTA installation’s
MTAfolder, not inSystem32orSysWOW64. - Which architecture is involved: MTA uses the 32-bit GTA: San Andreas client. A 64-bit Windows installation can still run it, but a 64-bit replacement DLL is not appropriate.
- What changed: an MTA update, interrupted setup, antivirus detection, GTA mod, cleanup utility, graphics tool, or driver change.
A public DLL listing reports a 32-bit 1.5.7.20157 build of approximately 0.86 MB, but that metadata is not a universal official version or size to use for replacing the file.
What the game_sa.dll error means
The MTA installer places the file in a path equivalent to:
C:Program Files (x86)MTA San Andreas 1.5MTAgame_sa.dll
Your folder may differ if you selected another drive or installed a different MTA release. The important detail is the final MTAgame_sa.dll location.

Common reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because game_sa.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because game_sa.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading game_sa.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting game_sa.dll.”
- “game_sa.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The exact wording varies by Windows version and launch path. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. Windows can show that message when game_sa.dll exists but a dependency required by it does not.
Fix 1: Reinstall MTA:SA cleanly
A complete MTA reinstall is the safest and most likely fix for a genuinely missing or damaged file. It restores the module together with the files that load it, rather than mixing a downloaded DLL with an existing installation.
- Close Multi Theft Auto and GTA: San Andreas.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Multi Theft Auto.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current MTA:SA client from the official Multi Theft Auto website.
- Run the installer.
- Install MTA in its own directory, separate from the GTA: San Andreas folder.
- Avoid installing it inside OneDrive or another cloud-synchronised directory.
- When setup asks for the game location, select the correct GTA: San Andreas installation.
- Launch MTA from its Start-menu shortcut.
MTA requires a supported GTA: San Andreas 1.0 installation. Let single-player start successfully before testing MTA, and keep a clean, unmodified GTA:SA installation for multiplayer.
Check the restored file
After installation, open File Explorer and browse to the MTA folder. You should see:

Do not judge the installation only by the file’s presence. Start MTA from its shortcut. If the error is gone, the loader can find the module and resolve its startup requirements.
If the file is still absent, check antivirus quarantine before reinstalling repeatedly.
Fix 2: Confirm GTA: San Andreas is compatible
MTA is not a replacement for the original game. It integrates with the GTA: San Andreas process and expects a supported installation.

Check the following:
- Open the GTA: San Andreas folder.
- Start the single-player game using its normal executable.
- Confirm that it launches without an error.
- Remove custom files, graphics injectors, texture replacements, and other modifications temporarily.
- Test MTA again using the clean game folder.
MTA’s installation should remain separate from the San Andreas directory. If you have a heavily modified copy, create or use another clean GTA:SA installation for MTA rather than trying to repair every modification in place.
A problem that began immediately after adding a mod is more likely to involve the game installation or an injected graphics component than a missing game_sa.dll.
Fix 3: Install the 32-bit Visual C++ runtimes
MTA is associated with the 32-bit GTA:SA client. On 64-bit Windows, install the x86 Visual C++ packages. Installing only x64 packages does not provide the 32-bit runtime libraries that a 32-bit application needs.
MTA’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out Visual C++ 2013 and Visual C++ 2015. Microsoft provides the supported redistributable downloads on its official page.
- Open Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
- Download the x86 package for the required Visual C++ runtime.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Choose Repair if the runtime is already installed, or Install if it is absent.
- Repeat for the other MTA-recommended legacy runtime if it is missing.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch MTA again.
Do not remove older Visual C++ packages simply because a newer one is installed. Microsoft supports side-by-side installation because different applications can depend on different runtime generations.

Fix 4: Add the legacy DirectX components
Modern Windows includes the DirectX platform, but older games can still require optional side-by-side files from the legacy DirectX SDK. These can include D3DX9, XInput, or XAudio components.

- Download
dxwebsetup.exe. - Run the installer as an administrator if Windows asks for permission.
- Accept the license terms.
- Allow the installer to download and install the legacy components.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MTA.
This package does not replace the DirectX version built into Windows. It adds older runtime files that legacy games may need. It is relevant when the MTA module is present but its dependency chain cannot be completed.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a game module after an update or during a scan. That is a possible cause, not proof that every game_sa.dll error is a false positive.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the MTA installation.
- Expand the event and review the detected path.
- Restore the file only if it came from the official MTA installer and your security product confirms the detection is a false positive.
- Reinstall or repair MTA afterward so the installation is restored consistently.
Do not disable antivirus permanently. Do not replace a quarantined module with a file from a random DLL download site. Such files can contain malware, belong to a different build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual installation problem unresolved.
Fix 6: Remove conflicting graphics files and overlays
MTA’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends removing a manually added d3d9.dll from the GTA:SA installation directory if one is present.
- Close MTA and GTA:SA.
- Open the GTA:SA installation folder.
- Look for
d3d9.dll. - If you added it for a graphics mod or wrapper, move it to a backup folder outside the game directory.
- Do not delete it permanently until you know which software installed it.
- Temporarily close overlays, injectors, tuning utilities, and monitoring software.
- In particular, exit Evolve, RivaTuner, MSI Afterburner, and similar background tools.
- Start MTA again.
If MTA works after this change, restore third-party graphics software one item at a time to identify the conflict.
Fix 7: Update graphics drivers only when the symptom points there
A graphics driver update is not the primary repair for a missing game_sa.dll. It becomes relevant when MTA starts but crashes during rendering, reports graphics allocation problems, or fails after a driver or overlay change.
To check the driver through Windows:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after an update.
For a clean vendor installation, use the graphics manufacturer’s official support page and select the correct model and operating system. Avoid driver-cleaning utilities unless you understand exactly what they remove.

MTA still needs to be reinstalled when its own game_sa.dll is missing.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for Windows-level symptoms
game_sa.dll is an application file, not a protected Windows system file. System File Checker will not download or restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is malfunctioning or when runtime installation fails, not as the first response to an absent MTA module.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the Visual C++ or DirectX installer again.

Do not use System32, SysWOW64, or regsvr32
Avoid these common but incorrect repairs:
- Do not copy
game_sa.dlltoC:WindowsSystem32. - Do not copy it to
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not rename another DLL to
game_sa.dll. - Do not download a standalone replacement from a random DLL website.
- Do not run
regsvr32 game_sa.dll.
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. MTA loads game_sa.dll as part of its own client; it does not need to be registered as a Windows system component. Registration will not repair a missing file, a missing dependency, an incompatible build, or a damaged MTA installation.
Missing file versus a crash inside game_sa.dll
A startup message saying that game_sa.dll is missing is different from a crash report that names the module.
If MTA never opens and Windows reports “not found,” follow the reinstall and dependency steps above.
If MTA starts and then crashes with an access violation, assertion, out-of-memory message, or graphics-related error, replacing the DLL is unlikely to help. Instead:
- Remove GTA:SA modifications.
- Remove a manually added
d3d9.dll. - Close overlays and tuning utilities.
- Reduce custom models, textures, and other assets.
- Update MTA.
- Review the MTA crash report and use MTA support channels if the failure persists.
A module named in a crash report is not automatically the cause of the crash.
If the error still remains
After reinstalling MTA and the runtimes, check:
- Available disk space.
- Whether your Windows account can write to the installation directory.
- Antivirus protection history.
- Whether the installer was interrupted.
- Whether the MTA and GTA folders are on a cloud-synchronised path.
- Whether a new local Windows user profile produces the same result.
- Whether a clean boot eliminates a third-party injector.
System Restore is reasonable only when the problem clearly began after a known software or system change and the other repairs have failed. It is not the standard repair for this module.

When contacting MTA support, provide the Windows version, MTA version, full installation path, exact error text, antivirus event if present, and the relevant crash log. Avoid sending a replacement DLL as the proposed solution.

Is game_sa.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an MTA:SA client module and should remain in the MTA installation’s MTA folder.
Should I download game_sa.dll separately?
No. Install or reinstall the complete MTA client from the official Multi Theft Auto source. A standalone file may be malicious, mismatched, incomplete, or the wrong architecture.
