DISM can also load a legitimate working copy from a temporary servicing directory during an update, recovery, or image-repair operation.
What the file is and where it belongs
OSProvider.dll is a Windows servicing component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, game library, or ordinary third-party application dependency. Windows includes DISM, and the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit also provides DISM for deployment work.

Historical version examples
Public file inventories contain examples such as these, but they are not a complete or current Microsoft build catalog.
| Architecture | Example version | Approximate reported size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 10.0.18362.719 | 0.14 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.18362.1 | 0.11 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.2.9200.16384 | 0.1 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.1.7601.17514 | 0.1 MB |
Do not choose a replacement based only on one of these numbers. The correct file must come from the installed Windows build and its servicing sources.
What the error messages mean
You may see messages such as:
OSProvider.dll is missing from your computerThe program can't start because OSProvider.dll is missing from your computerError loading OSProvider.dllThe specified module could not be foundOSProvider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an errorDISM failedNo providers were found that support the command
These messages do not necessarily mean that only one DLL has disappeared. Windows may be reporting a damaged component store, an interrupted update, a broken temporary servicing session, an invalid offline image path, or a dependency problem. Microsoft-hosted DISM logs show this provider involved in online and offline servicing, cumulative-update failures, Reset, and recovery operations.
If an unrelated application displays the message, first check what operation was running. The available evidence points primarily to Windows servicing rather than games or ordinary desktop applications.
Fix 1: Restart and complete Windows Update
Pending updates can leave the servicing stack in an incomplete state.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart again when Windows requests it.
- Retry the operation that produced the error.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If Windows Update itself fails, continue with the repair commands below. Do not repeatedly interrupt an update or manually delete folders under C:WindowsWinSxS or other servicing directories.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM should run before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the command to finish. It can pause for a long time at one percentage while Windows examines and repairs the component store.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then test DISM, Windows Update, or the recovery operation again.
Typical SFC results include:
- did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no remaining protected-file problem.
- found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: use the repair-source procedure below or move to a recovery repair.
If SFC cannot repair everything, create a readable extract of its results:
Recommended Free Tools
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
This places sfcdetails.txt on the desktop.
Running these commands manually is safe but repetitive when you are unsure what changed between attempts. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying system-file problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the normal repair path.
Fix 3: Supply a matching repair source
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update may not be able to provide the files required for repair. Use a Windows installation source that matches the installed edition, build, language, and architecture as closely as possible.
After mounting or preparing the matching source, run this example from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder in your repair source. /LimitAccess tells DISM not to use Windows Update.
A mismatched source can fail to repair the system or introduce additional version problems. Do not use a random Windows folder copied from another computer. If you have installation media, verify that it corresponds to the same Windows release and edition before using it.
Run SFC again after DISM completes:
sfc /scannow
If the repair source is correct and the command still fails, record the exact DISM error and consider an in-place repair rather than copying individual files.
Fix 4: Check architecture, location, and signature
A 32-bit DLL cannot substitute for a 64-bit Windows component, and a file from another Windows release may have incompatible dependencies.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
On Windows 10, use Settings > System > About and inspect System type.

- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
%WINDIR%System32Dism. - Right-click
OSProvider.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, when present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
A file in a temporary servicing directory is not automatically malicious because DISM may legitimately use temporary provider copies. However, a copy in a user-writable folder, an application directory, or a random download location deserves additional investigation. Check its signature and run a security scan before opening or restoring it.
If the file is absent from the expected location, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not copy a file from another PC just because its name matches.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file, but a detection is not automatically a false positive.

- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
OSProvider.dll. - Note the detected path, action, and threat classification.
- Do not restore the file unless you have verified that it is the genuine Microsoft-signed component and the detection is a false positive.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan if the path or signature is suspicious.
If malware is suspected, do not restore a quarantined file merely because its filename is OSProvider.dll. Use a trusted offline scan and repair Windows from a known-good Microsoft source.
Fix 6: Consider disk or file-system corruption
Repeated component-store corruption can result from storage or file-system problems.
Before checking the disk, back up important files. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run an appropriate disk check for the affected drive.
- Restart if Windows schedules the check.
- Run DISM and SFC again afterward.
If errors return after successful repairs, check the drive’s health using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic guidance or have the computer inspected. A failing drive can repeatedly damage repaired Windows components.

If DISM will not start at all, or repair commands repeatedly fail, escalate without manually replacing the DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft describes this process as reinstalling the current Windows version while repairing system files and components and preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.
In-place installation
A matching Windows installation medium can also perform an in-place repair. Start setup.exe from within Windows and select Keep personal files and apps when that option is offered. Confirm the edition and architecture before proceeding.
System Restore
If the problem began after an update, failed reset, or software change:
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without changing personal files, but back up important data first.

Available options can include System Restore, startup recovery, command-line servicing, or Reset this PC. Reset should be treated as a later step because it can remove applications and may change personal data depending on the selected option.
Driver troubleshooting is usually secondary
A graphics, storage, chipset, or update driver is not the normal owner of OSProvider.dll. Do not begin by reinstalling random drivers. Consider driver work only when the DISM error began immediately after a hardware or driver change, or Device Manager shows a related device problem.
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver, Roll Back Driver, or the hardware manufacturer’s official package as appropriate.
- Restart and retest Windows servicing.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be error-prone when several devices are outdated. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional and is not a substitute for repairing the Windows component store.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file with missing dependencies. Copying the result into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder often fails because the underlying component store or servicing stack remains damaged.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, Windows Recovery, or an in-place repair instead.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. OSProvider.dll is a DISM provider, not a normal COM library. Running this is not a verified repair:
regsvr32 OSProvider.dll
It may report that DllRegisterServer is missing, and it does not restore component-store files or dependencies.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game again is not a verified remedy for a Windows DISM provider. Reinstall an application only when the error is demonstrably generated by that application and the file is inside its own installation directory. For the Windows servicing errors covered here, repair Windows first.
FAQ
Is OSProvider.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows DISM provider commonly described as DISM OS Services Provider.
Is a copy in a temporary folder malware?
Not necessarily. DISM can copy or load providers from temporary servicing directories. Verify the Microsoft signature, the operation that was running, and the file’s behavior rather than judging by location alone.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, dependencies, or servicing state. Use a matching Microsoft repair source.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency, or the file may be incompatible or damaged. The message does not prove that OSProvider.dll alone is missing.
Will reinstalling Windows erase my files?
An in-place installation can preserve personal files, applications, and settings when Keep personal files and apps is selected. Recovery and Reset choices vary, so read each screen carefully and back up important data first.
What is the safest order?
Restart and complete updates, run DISM, run SFC, provide a matching repair source if needed, check quarantine and signatures, then escalate to System Restore, Windows 11 repair reinstall, or an in-place installation.
