Games Like Civilization VI: Turn-Based Strategy Alternatives to Try

If you like Civilization VI but want a different way to build a society, start with the kind of change you want. HUMANKIND keeps a historical setting while letting you combine cultures across ages. Millennia focuses on historical nation-building over the publisher’s advertised 10,000-year span. Age of Wonders 4 moves into fantasy and explicitly combines 4X strategy with turn-based tactical battles. Civilization VII is the obvious in-series option, but its age-based structure means it is not simply Civ VI with new content.

These are fit-based alternatives drawn from each game’s official description, not a ranking from comparative playtesting. The available material does not establish relative difficulty, campaign length, artificial-intelligence quality, performance, price or player reception.

What makes Civilization VI the baseline?

The official Civilization site describes the series as turn-based strategy in which you guide a civilization through history and build an empire. The Civilization VI page highlights three useful reference points for choosing an alternative:

  • Territorial city growth: cities expand across their local terrain.
  • Parallel research: culture is developed alongside technology.
  • Leader identity: leaders pursue agendas connected to their historical traits.

Those systems create a recognizable type of 4X experience: a historical setting, a civilization identity that is expressed through leaders and development, and an empire map where expansion, research and conflict are connected. The alternatives below change one or more of those pillars. The key question is not which game is universally “better,” but which part of the Civ VI formula you want to preserve or replace.

HUMANKIND: change your historical identity as you advance

Why it fits a Civ VI player

HUMANKIND is the most direct recommendation when your favorite part of Civ VI is guiding a society through recognizable periods of human history, but you want civilization identity to be more flexible. Its official site says you create a civilization by combining 60 historical cultures from the Ancient to Modern Age. Each culture contributes its own gameplay layer.

That structure addresses a specific limitation some players perceive in a fixed civilization choice: your identity does not have to be represented by one historical label for the entire game. Instead, the advertised design lets the civilization you are building change as it moves through the ages. A player looking for continuity with Civ VI’s historical framing can therefore try a different model of identity without leaving the broad empire-building genre.

What is established—and what is not

The 60 figure is the game’s advertised culture count on its official site. It is not an independently verified statistic, and the source does not establish that every possible combination is equally viable. It also does not establish that HUMANKIND is deeper, easier, harder or better balanced than Civ VI. Treat the culture system as the reason to investigate the game, not as proof of a superior outcome.

Age of Wonders 4 Expansion Pass - PC [Online Game Code]
  • Archmage Attire - The Wizards of Magehaven dress to impress, representing their grand personalities and ambitions.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn - Embrace the power of the Ancient Dragon Lords, in the Age of Wonders 4: Dragon Dawn Content Pack.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Empires and Ashes - The empires of mortals resurge after the devastation brought forth by the Wizard Kings.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury - Channel Nature’s Spirits in the Age of Wonders 4: Primal Fury Content Pack. Create races using new beastly forms and a primeval culture.
  • Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms - The Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms expansion opens portals to realms filled with arcane marvels and unspeakable horrors. New forces threaten the rule of the Godir of Magehaven.

Choose HUMANKIND when…

  • You want to stay in a historical setting.
  • You are curious about changing cultural identity from one age to the next.
  • You want a different answer to the question “What is my civilization?” while retaining an empire-building focus.

Look elsewhere when…

  • Your main goal is fantasy world-building rather than historical cultures.
  • You specifically want battles presented as separate, turn-by-turn tactical encounters; the cited description does not establish that as HUMANKIND’s defining emphasis.
  • You need a documented comparison of artificial intelligence, performance, campaign length or price; those measures are not supplied here.

Millennia: a historical 4X journey across 10,000 years

Why it fits a long-span history player

Paradox describes Millennia as a historical 4X strategy game that navigates 10,000 years, beginning at humanity’s dawn and reaching the near future. That makes it a clear candidate if the attraction of Civ VI is the sweep from early societies toward modern development, but you want a game whose central pitch foregrounds an especially broad timeline.

Millennia also frames history as something that can branch. The publisher says players shape development through ages or adapt to a future chosen by rivals. In practical decision terms, this points to a game in which the historical direction of a campaign is not presented as a single fixed track. The important distinction is not merely the number of years on the calendar; it is the idea that competing powers can influence which future becomes relevant.

How to interpret the 10,000-year claim

“10,000 years” is Paradox’s description of the game’s historical span, not a measured campaign-time statistic. It does not tell you how long a session lasts, how many turns a campaign contains or how quickly an era advances. Keep those questions separate when checking a current store listing or manual.

Choose Millennia when…

  • You want historical nation-building to remain the center of the experience.
  • A very long civilizational timeline is more appealing than a tightly bounded period.
  • You like the idea that rivals can help determine the future you must respond to.

Look elsewhere when…

  • You want a fantasy setting and magical realms.
  • You want an explicit emphasis on tactical combat; the cited Millennia description focuses on historical 4X development instead.
  • You are looking for verified information about balance, difficulty or technical performance; the publisher description does not provide those comparisons.

Age of Wonders 4: trade historical identity for fantasy tactics

Why it is the biggest change in setting

Age of Wonders 4 is the choice for a Civ VI player who wants to keep turn-based empire strategy but leave real-world history behind. Paradox describes it as a blend of 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat in magical realms. That single description establishes two deliberate shifts: the setting is fantasy, and combat has an explicitly tactical layer rather than being described only as part of an empire map.

Rank #3
Age of Wonders 4 Premium - PC [Online Game Code]
  • Craft your followers by combining bodily forms, societal traits and arcane powers. Build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves, or recreate your favorite fantasy tropes
  • Every choice opens up new possibilities and tactical advantages; deep, multilayered strategy allows you to try new tactics or explore new powers at every turn
  • Explore a new realm with each game - or create your own! Challenge new variations and combinations of locations and features, from frozen wastelands ruled by ice queens to desolated ruins where dragons roam

This is useful if your interest in Civ VI is less about historical leaders and more about making decisions across a map, developing a realm and then resolving battles through turns. It is not a historical replacement for HUMANKIND or Millennia. It is a genre-adjacent alternative that changes the fiction and puts tactical encounters in the headline.

What the official description supports

The source supports the 4X-plus-tactical-combat blend and the magical setting. It does not establish how deep the battles are, how difficult they become, how long campaigns run or whether the game is easier or harder than Civ VI. Those are sensible questions to investigate separately, but they should not be answered with assumptions based only on the genre label.

Choose Age of Wonders 4 when…

  • You are happy to replace historical civilizations with magical realms.
  • You want turn-based tactical combat to be a visible part of the experience.
  • You still want the expansion, development and decision-making framework associated with 4X strategy.

Look elsewhere when…

  • Your priority is historical continuity from ancient societies to modern states.
  • You want to keep Civ VI’s leader-and-agenda framing specifically.
  • You need a source-backed verdict on combat quality rather than a description of the design focus.

Civilization VII: the in-series option, with age-based changes

Why consider the sequel?

If you want the Civilization name and a contemporary entry rather than a different franchise, Civilization VII is the natural comparison point. The official Civilization site says it launched on February 11, 2025, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac and Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That launch information makes it a current franchise option, but it should not be treated as evidence that it reproduces Civ VI’s structure unchanged. Civilization Support’s page on changes from Civilization VI says some gameplay elements are exclusive to a particular Age, while some elements carry over based on the previous civilization and the player’s successes.

Why the age system matters to your choice

Age-specific content and carry-over rules imply a different way of understanding continuity. In Civ VI, the baseline comparison is a civilization developing through history with its identity represented by the selected leader and related systems. In Civ VII, the support material describes continuity that depends partly on what happened in the previous Age and on the civilization that came before it.

That can make the sequel more relevant to a reader who wants the Civilization framework but is interested in a campaign broken into distinct historical phases. It can be less suitable for someone seeking a like-for-like substitute for Civ VI’s exact flow. The official support page establishes the structural change; it does not by itself establish whether the change is preferable.

How to choose without an unsupported ranking

Step 1: decide whether history is essential

  1. Yes, history is essential: compare HUMANKIND and Millennia. HUMANKIND emphasizes combining cultures; Millennia emphasizes a 10,000-year span and futures shaped through age development and rival choices.
  2. No, fantasy is welcome: examine Age of Wonders 4, whose official description places magical realms and tactical combat at the center.
  3. You mainly want the Civilization framework: include Civilization VII, while accounting for its Age-based changes.

Step 2: identify what “civilization” should mean

  • One identity that changes through history: Civ VI is the baseline, with leaders and historical agendas as a reference point.
  • A culture assembled across ages: HUMANKIND’s official pitch is the clearest match.
  • A nation adapting to alternate futures: Millennia’s publisher description points in that direction.
  • A magical realm with a tactical army: Age of Wonders 4 is the explicit fit.
  • An age-to-age structure within the same series: Civilization VII describes age-exclusive elements and carry-over.

Step 3: decide how much combat detail you want

If you want the article’s sources to establish a tactical-combat focus, Age of Wonders 4 is the only named option whose official description does so directly. The descriptions for HUMANKIND and Millennia support historical 4X recommendations but do not make tactical battles their defining distinction. Civilization VII’s cited support page concerns structural changes, not a combat comparison.

Step 4: verify practical fit before purchase

  1. Check the current platform listing and edition name.
  2. Confirm that the listed operating system or console is supported; the Civilization VII launch list includes PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, Mac and Linux, but individual editions can differ.
  3. Read the current product description for multiplayer, language, accessibility and content details rather than inferring them from another game.
  4. Check the current regional price and availability. No price or recurring-cost figure is established by the sources used here.
  5. Look for recent support information if you need a particular version or feature, because store pages and platform listings can change.

What these sources do not prove

A careful recommendation should separate a game’s advertised design from qualities that require testing or broader evidence. The official pages used for these suggestions do not establish:

  • Which game has the strongest artificial intelligence.
  • Relative difficulty, accessibility or learning curve.
  • Campaign length, turn count or average session time.
  • Performance, loading behavior or hardware requirements.
  • Balance between cultures, civilizations, factions or combat options.
  • Current price, discounts, downloadable content or regional availability.
  • Player reception or a consensus ranking.

That is why the recommendations are organized by preference. A design description can tell you what a game is trying to emphasize; it cannot, on its own, tell you whether every player will find that emphasis successful.

A decision guide in one minute

Your priority Best starting point Reason
Historical setting plus a civilization that can change identity HUMANKIND Its official site advertises combinations of 60 historical cultures across the Ancient to Modern Age.
Historical development stretched from humanity’s dawn toward the near future Millennia Paradox describes a 10,000-year span and adaptation to futures selected by rivals.
Fantasy realms and turn-based tactical battles Age of Wonders 4 Its official description explicitly combines 4X strategy with tactical combat.
A newer Civilization entry rather than a new franchise Civilization VII It launched on February 11, 2025, and introduces age-specific and carry-over systems.

Final buying checklist

  • Write down the one Civ VI feature you most want to keep: historical setting, empire growth, research, leader identity or turn-based decision-making.
  • Choose whether your desired change is cultural flexibility, a longer historical arc, fantasy tactics or a new Civilization-era structure.
  • Use the official product page for the candidate game to confirm the current platform and edition.
  • Do not use the advertised culture count or timeline as a promise about balance, campaign length or quality.
  • For Civilization VII, read the current support material about Age-specific elements and carry-over before assuming it plays exactly like Civ VI.
