It keeps you in the same universe and turns discovery into an exploration game. Pick Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition for a spacefaring locomotive adventure, or Mask of the Rose if you would rather focus on relationships, romance, and a murder mystery.
What makes a game feel like Fallen London?
Failbetter Games describes Fallen London as a free, browser-based text adventure and literary RPG. Its stories evolve through choices, and its bite-sized play sessions let you pursue different stories and ambitions. The company sums up its Victorian-Gothic underworld this way: “Welcome to a dark and hilarious Victorian-Gothic underworld, where every choice has a consequence, from the style of your hat to the price of your soul.”

That combination points to more useful match criteria than atmosphere alone: substantial authored writing, choices that shape a character or relationships, and a setting worth exploring. A November 2025 post in the Interactive Fiction Community described a desire for story-rich games with “actual game mechanics” and little grinding. That is one player’s preference, not a measure of what the wider audience wants; it does help distinguish the games below.
Which Fallen London-like game should you choose?
| Game | Best for | How it differs from Fallen London | Practical caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunless Sea | Exploration, survival, and stories in the same universe | Failbetter describes it as a discovery-and-exploration game set in Fallen London’s world, with officers whose stories you can uncover. Zubmariner is an expansion. | The official description establishes its setting and broad focus, but does not provide a detailed comparison of difficulty or pacing. |
| Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition | Travel and exploration in a strange Victorian setting among the stars | You captain a spacefaring locomotive. The official Nintendo listing describes narrative choices, combat, equipment upgrades, and a captain lineage—or reloading after death. Steam lists it as a single-player RPG, released January 31, 2019. | It adds real-time combat and survival elements, so it may be a less direct fit if you mainly want text and decisions. Steam listings and Nintendo availability vary by region and can change. |
| Mask of the Rose | Romance, social decisions, and a mystery in the same setting | Failbetter calls it a visual novel centered on matchmaking, relationship choices, storycrafting, and a murder investigation. The developer says it is an introduction that does not require playing earlier games. | It is the relationship-and-mystery option; the official description does not establish that it uses Fallen London’s browser-game format. |
Sunless Sea: choose exploration in the Fallen London universe
Sunless Sea is the clearest starting point if what you want to carry forward is the setting and writing, but you also want travel and discovery to be central to play. Failbetter describes it as an exploration game in the Fallen London setting, where officers have stories to uncover. The change is in the way you encounter the world: you explore it rather than returning to the original’s browser-based text adventure format. Zubmariner is an expansion, not a separate recommendation.

Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition: take the story among the stars
Choose Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition if the appeal of travel and a strange Victorian world matters more than staying beneath the earth. You captain a locomotive in space, with narrative choices alongside combat and equipment upgrades. Its captain lineage or reload-after-death options are part of the official Nintendo listing’s description. Steam identifies it as a single-player RPG and gives January 31, 2019 as its release date.
This is the most action-oriented of these three options: real-time combat and survival elements sit alongside its storytelling. If you are looking primarily for text and choices, consider Mask of the Rose instead. Store listings and regional availability can change, so check the relevant storefront for current details.

Mask of the Rose: focus on relationships and mystery
Mask of the Rose is the best fit if social choices, romance, and a murder investigation sound more appealing than a journey built around exploration and survival. Failbetter describes it as a visual novel with matchmaking, relationship choices, and storycrafting, and says newcomers can start here without having played the earlier games. It shares the universe, but its visual-novel format is distinct from Fallen London’s browser-based text adventure.
How to pick based on the kind of choices you want
- Want discovery and exploration in the same universe? Start with Sunless Sea.
- Want a broader travel adventure with combat and survival elements? Choose Sunless Skies: Sovereign Edition.
- Want relationships, romance, and a mystery? Choose Mask of the Rose.
- Want the original browser-based format? These recommendations change how you play: Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies add exploration and survival play, while Mask of the Rose is a visual novel.
The official descriptions establish these games’ settings and broad play styles, but do not establish that one involves less grinding than another. Choose by the role you want mechanics to play between story scenes: discovery and travel, combat and survival, or relationships and investigation.
