For street-racing chases with several escape tactics, try Need for Speed Unbound. For an open-world RPG with a recognizable star-based wanted system, choose Cyberpunk 2077.
Which GTA-like game has the best police chases?
Need for Speed Heat is the strongest pick if escalating driving pursuits are the main attraction. It is a racing game rather than a broad crime sandbox, but its day-and-night structure gives police encounters clear stakes. EA’s PC manual explains that daytime police pursue you if provoked; at night, they target cars and respond to existing Heat. As Heat rises, more powerful units join the chase.

During a pursuit, you can try to break line of sight or disable police cars. Getting caught costs Bank, resets Heat, and ends the night. That makes each night run a decision about how much risk to accept before heading back to safety.
Best games by the kind of chase you want
Need for Speed Heat: escalating, high-stakes pursuits
Pick Heat for a chase loop built around driving, nighttime risk, and increasingly tough police. EA describes pursuits involving ramming, pinning, helicopter surveillance, and vehicle hacking, alongside the escalating Heat system. Its appeal is focused: it delivers racing and police pressure, not the full range of on-foot crime activities found in GTA.

Need for Speed Unbound: choose how to escape
Need for Speed Unbound is another street-racing option if you want the escape itself to feel like a tactical choice. EA says racing builds Heat and describes three ways to deal with police: outrun them, fight head-on, or hide. See EA’s Unbound features page for its official overview.
Cyberpunk 2077: wanted stars in an RPG world
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if you want an RPG and urban open world alongside escalating police response. CD Projekt Red’s August 31, 2023 Update 2.0 announcement describes Heat levels rising to five stars, with MaxTac arriving at the maximum. It also details car chases and roadblocks; to escape, leave the crime scene and avoid being seen.

- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
Those details describe the police revamp announced for Update 2.0 on then-current-generation consoles and PC. Treat the announcement as an explanation of that update, not as a current platform or edition guide.
Need for Speed Payback: gadgets and coordinated cops
Need for Speed Payback is worth considering if police teamwork and chase gadgets sound appealing. EA’s older “Cops, Cops, Cops!” article describes coordinated police cars, roadblocks, spike strips, killswitch attacks, helicopters, and bait crates that trigger pursuits. Check the edition and platform details for the version you plan to play; the cited feature article is older promotional material.

Is Watch Dogs a good match for police chases?
Watch Dogs is an adjacent choice if the urban setting and hacking are what you want, rather than a confirmed wanted-system substitute. Ubisoft’s official game page describes protagonist Aiden Pearce in Chicago and hacking systems such as traffic lights and the electrical grid, but does not establish how its police pursuits work. The available evidence supports recommending it for hacking-focused urban action, not for a specific chase mechanic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among these GTA alternatives
- For the most chase-focused pick: Need for Speed Heat, if you want Heat escalation and the risk of losing Bank when caught.
- For active escape choices: Need for Speed Unbound, if racing, fighting, and hiding all appeal as ways to handle police.
- For an RPG with wanted stars: Cyberpunk 2077, if you want the broader role-playing setting along with the Update 2.0 police system.
- For pursuit gadgets: Need for Speed Payback, if roadblocks, spikes, helicopters, and coordinated police pressure are the draw.
- For hacking rather than verified pursuit mechanics: Watch Dogs, if its city and systems-focused premise matter more than a documented wanted-level match.
These games overlap with GTA in different ways, but none should be mistaken for a complete replacement across every part of its crime-sandbox formula: the Need for Speed choices center on racing, while Cyberpunk is an RPG and Watch Dogs’ cited official page establishes its hacking premise.
