Start with Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund, then read The Flood, First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx. Halo Studios lists those as the original four Halo novels in release order. The first, published October 30, 2001, came out before Halo: Combat Evolved.
Halo books in publication order: the first four
Halo Studios’ Official Halo Book Guide identifies these four novels as the original sequence. Their publication order is a straightforward place to begin if you want to follow the books as readers first encountered them.
| Order | Book | Author and publication date | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Halo: The Fall of Reach | Eric Nylund — October 30, 2001 | Master Chief’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, the fall of Reach, and events leading to the discovery of Halo. |
| 2 | Halo: The Flood | William C. Dietz — April 1, 2003 | A novelization of Halo: Combat Evolved, with additional perspectives from the UNSC, the Covenant and others. |
| 3 | Halo: First Strike | Eric Nylund — December 2, 2003 | After the events of Combat Evolved, Master Chief, Cortana, Avery Johnson and other survivors try to return to Earth. |
| 4 | Halo: Ghosts of Onyx | Eric Nylund — October 31, 2006 | The SPARTAN-III program, Kurt-051, Dr. Halsey and the mysterious planet Onyx. |
Publication order is not chronology
Release order tells you when the books appeared, not the order in which every story happens in the Halo universe. The official guide groups many titles into connected series and provides publication dates and summaries; it is not a complete in-universe timeline for every novel and anthology story. If you want a single release-date sequence, use the dates rather than treating series headings as one uninterrupted reading order.
Choose a connected series for what to read next
After the original four, you can follow a self-contained strand rather than trying to turn every Halo book into one linear sequence. The following titles are in the order Halo Studios lists within each series.
#1 Best Overall
Forerunner Saga
Read Greg Bear’s ancient-history trilogy in this order: Cryptum (January 4, 2011), Primordium (January 3, 2012) and Silentium (March 19, 2013). It explores Forerunner history and events leading toward the firing of the Halo Array.
Kilo-Five trilogy
Read Glasslands (October 25, 2011), The Thursday War (October 2, 2012) and Mortal Dictata (January 21, 2014). The trilogy takes place in the immediate aftermath of the Covenant War, after Halo 3.
Rank #2
Master Chief and Blue Team
Follow Silent Storm (September 4, 2018), Oblivion (September 24, 2019) and Shadows of Reach (October 20, 2020). Silent Storm is set during the first year of the Covenant War; the later books continue Blue Team stories.
Rion Forge and the Ace of Spades
Read Smoke and Shadow (November 28, 2016), Renegades (February 19, 2019) and Point of Light (March 2, 2021) for a strand following Rion Forge and her salvager crew.

Battle Born (January 1, 2019) comes before Meridian Divide (October 1, 2019). The books follow young civilians on Meridian during the Covenant invasion.

Standalone novels and anthologies
If you would rather sample a particular era, character or format than commit to a series, the official guide also lists standalone stories and short-story anthologies. Options include Contact Harvest, Broken Circle, Hunters in the Dark, Saint’s Testimony, Shadow of Intent, Legacy of Onyx, Outcasts, Epitaph, Empty Throne, Evolutions and Fractures. Their inclusion here is not a claim that they form a single sequence; choose based on the story or format that interests you.
Latest book listed by Halo Studios
As of October 7, 2026, Halo Studios’ guide lists Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One by Jeff Easterling and Alexander Wakeford, released May 26, 2026, as the latest Halo book. It is an anthology, not the clearest first novel: the guide describes it as collecting over thirty short stories from across the setting, including twenty-four adventures previously available online and ten new tales exclusive to the volume. It also includes lore items and vignettes connected to Halo Infinite. Halo Studios lists trade paperback, ebook and unabridged audiobook formats.
Because the anthology brings together stories from across Halo and includes material previously published online, it works better as a broad sampler than as a substitute for the original starter sequence. Its release details reflect the official guide’s listing on the date above.
