It is Warframe’s six-player, high-level endgame mode, added in Update 44.1.0 on October 7, 2026. If you want another co-op looter-shooter rather than another Warframe activity, The First Descendant is the clearest documented alternative: it is a third-person co-op action RPG with character abilities, multiplayer boss fights, grappling-hook movement, weapons and customization.
The two games share a broad loot-and-build appeal, but The First Descendant is not a one-for-one recreation of Icebind. Icebind is a short, randomized Warframe challenge with strict access requirements and a weekly limit; The First Descendant is a separate character-based shooter whose specific activity structure and progression should be evaluated on their own terms.

What The Icebind actually is
Digital Extremes introduced The Icebind in the Warframe Update 44.1.0 notes, dated October 7, 2026. The studio describes it as an experiment for both the developers and players, with the mode intended to evolve through planned phases. The update notes state: “Our newest gamemode has arrived! The Icebind is an experiment for both us making Warframe, and for those playing it.”

That wording matters when deciding what to play next. Icebind is an endgame mode inside Warframe, not a standalone title you download separately. You keep using Warframe’s equipment, account progression and systems, then enter Icebind as a high-level cooperative activity.

How Icebind works
Icebind is built for prepared Warframe squads rather than new accounts. The official launch information describes six-player missions against level 999+ enemies. Each run is designed to last roughly 10–15 minutes, but the exact experience changes because several mission traits are randomized.
Core activity details
| Aspect | Officially stated details |
|---|---|
| Players | Up to six players in cooperative play |
| Enemy level | Level 999+ enemies |
| Mission length | Approximately 10–15 minutes |
| Randomized elements | Mission type, enemy, location and modifiers |
| Weekly access | Up to three runs per week |
| Completion reward | Guaranteed Riven Splicer reward |
| Launch matchmaking | Public matchmaking was not available at launch |
The combination of a six-player team, extreme enemy levels and random modifiers makes Icebind a test of loadout flexibility. You are not simply repeating one fixed encounter with a known script: the mission type, opposition, setting and modifiers can change from run to run. The short mission window also makes it suitable for focused sessions, provided your squad can meet the difficulty.

Who can enter
Icebind is gated behind Warframe’s late-game progression. Before you can access it, you must complete both the Angels of the Zariman and Whispers in the Walls quests. You must also unlock either Elite Temporal Archimedea or Elite Deep Archimedea.
- Complete Angels of the Zariman.
- Complete Whispers in the Walls.
- Unlock Elite Temporal Archimedea or Elite Deep Archimedea.
- Form a suitable squad, noting that public matchmaking was unavailable when the mode launched.
- Use one of your three weekly attempts and complete the randomized mission to receive the guaranteed Riven Splicer reward.
The October announcement also confirms that the mode became accessible on October 7, 2026 and can be played up to three times each week. Because attempts are limited, it is sensible to treat each run as a planned group activity rather than an unlimited farming loop.
Why The First Descendant is the best next game to try
PlayStation’s official description identifies The First Descendant as a third-person co-op action RPG looter shooter. Its documented features include distinct character abilities, multiplayer boss fights, grappling-hook movement, weapons and customization. Those elements make it a natural next stop for a Warframe player who wants another cooperative shooter with collectible gear and build decisions.
Rank #3
The recommendation is about genre and play pattern, not identical systems. Icebind’s defining features are its six-player Warframe framework, randomized mission traits, level 999+ enemies and three-run weekly limit. The available official description of The First Descendant does not establish equivalent player counts, randomized missions, enemy levels or a matching weekly structure. Consider it a neighboring game rather than a substitute mode.

Where the games overlap
- Cooperative shooting: Both are designed around playing with other people rather than being purely solo experiences.
- Loot and builds: Warframe players who enjoy tuning equipment can find a similar broad motivation in The First Descendant’s weapons and customization.
- Ability-driven characters: The First Descendant explicitly features distinct character abilities, while Warframe is built around Warframes and their ability kits.
- High-action movement: The First Descendant’s grappling hook gives traversal a visible role in combat and navigation.
Where they differ
| Decision point | The Icebind in Warframe | The First Descendant |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An endgame mode inside Warframe | A separate third-person co-op action RPG looter shooter |
| Camera and combat description | Uses Warframe’s established gameplay; the Icebind notes focus on the mode’s challenge structure rather than restating camera details | Third-person shooter, according to PlayStation’s official game description |
| Team/activity information | Six-player high-level missions with randomized mission type, enemy, location and modifiers | Character-based missions and multiplayer boss fights are documented; a comparable player count or randomized-mission system is not stated |
| Difficulty marker | Level 999+ enemies | No directly comparable enemy-level figure is stated in the cited official description |
| Progression and customization | Uses Warframe loadouts and awards a guaranteed Riven Splicer on completion | Uses characters, weapons and customization; an equivalent Riven Splicer reward is not applicable |
| Access pattern | Requires two quests and Elite Temporal Archimedea or Elite Deep Archimedea; maximum three runs weekly | Separate game progression; the cited sources do not state a matching quest gate or weekly attempt limit |
| Cross-play and platforms | Not specified in the Icebind launch notes cited here | PC, PlayStation and Xbox support with cross-play, according to Nexon support |
Choose based on the experience you want
Stay in Warframe if you want a concentrated endgame test
Icebind is the better choice when your priority is pushing an existing Warframe account. You already have access to your familiar arsenal, and the mode’s random mission traits challenge you to adapt without abandoning your current progression. The trade-offs are substantial: the entry requirements are high, public matchmaking was unavailable at launch, and you can complete it only three times per week.
Try The First Descendant if you want a new game with a similar broad genre appeal
Choose The First Descendant when you want a separate progression track, a third-person shooter presentation and character abilities distinct from Warframe’s roster. Its documented multiplayer boss fights provide a different form of cooperative objective from Icebind’s randomized short missions. Expect to learn a new game’s characters, weapons and customization rather than carrying over your Warframe builds.

Use both if you want variety
The weekly Icebind limit naturally leaves room for another game. You can reserve Warframe sessions for coordinated Icebind attempts, then use The First Descendant when you want additional co-op shooting, boss activities or a different build system. This avoids treating either title as a complete replacement for the other.

A practical transition plan for Warframe players
- Define what you are replacing. If you want Warframe’s exact endgame rules, no cited information shows The First Descendant has an equivalent Icebind mode. If you want cooperative looter-shooter action more generally, it fits the documented genre.
- Check your platform first. Verify the current PC, PlayStation or Xbox store page and account requirements. Players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One should note the June 19, 2025 support cutoff reported by Nexon.
- Expect a new build language. Bring your interest in weapons, customization and ability combinations, but do not expect Warframe equipment or Riven Splicer rewards to transfer between games.
- Start with the cooperative activities the game documents. The First Descendant’s official description highlights character abilities and multiplayer boss fights, so those are the closest confirmed activity categories to evaluate first.
- Keep Icebind’s schedule separate. If you continue playing Warframe, plan around the three-run weekly allowance instead of assuming unlimited attempts.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Icebind is a new game.” It is a Warframe mode introduced in Update 44.1.0.
- “The First Descendant is Icebind with different characters.” The documented overlap is the broad co-op looter-shooter appeal; the sources do not establish identical mission rules, progression or rewards.
- “Six-player teams are confirmed in both games.” Six players are specified for Icebind. The cited First Descendant description does not state a matching team size.
- “Any console version will work.” PS4 and Xbox One support ended June 19, 2025, so verify current platform support before directing friends to a store.
- “Icebind can be farmed all week.” The launch rules allow up to three runs per week.
Bottom line for Warframe players
Icebind is a limited, high-level Warframe activity for prepared six-player groups, with randomized 10–15-minute missions, level 999+ enemies and a guaranteed Riven Splicer on completion. Its quest and Elite Archimedea requirements make it an endgame destination, not a starting point.
The First Descendant is the strongest documented next game for someone who wants a separate co-op looter-shooter. Its third-person perspective, character abilities, multiplayer boss fights, grappling-hook movement, weapons and customization give it a clear genre connection while leaving room for a different pace and progression model. Choose it for a new game built around that wider formula, not because it reproduces Icebind’s exact structure.
