What File Systems and ISO Formats Does Ventoy Support? A 2026 Guide

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ventoy supports a range of file systems on its main data partition and can boot ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX and EFI image files. Its documented default file system is exFAT, while FAT32, NTFS, UDF, XFS and ext2/3/4 are also listed. The current Ventoy homepage additionally lists Btrfs, but the detailed disk-layout and FAQ pages retrieved for the same product do not, so verify Btrfs support in the documentation that ships with your Ventoy version before depending on it.

Ventoy separates the file system used to store your files from the image format it boots. You install Ventoy once, copy image files to the large first partition, and select an image from Ventoy’s boot menu. You do not reformat the drive every time you add another ISO.

File system and image format are different things

A Ventoy USB has a file system on its main partition. That file system determines how Windows, Linux or macOS reads and writes the partition and how image files are stored. An ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX or EFI file is an image that Ventoy can attempt to boot. Changing the file system does not change the image’s internal format.

Layer What it controls Examples
Main data partition How image files and other files are stored and accessed exFAT, FAT32, NTFS, UDF, XFS, ext2/3/4; Btrfs appears on the current homepage
Bootable image file The operating-system or utility image Ventoy presents to firmware ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD, VHDX, EFI
Ventoy EFI partition Stores Ventoy’s EFI boot files A separate FAT-formatted EFI System Partition

This distinction matters when choosing a format. A file system can be readable on your computer yet still be a poor choice for a drive that must be shared with Windows or used to install Windows.

Which file systems does Ventoy support?

Ventoy’s current homepage lists FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, UDF, XFS, Btrfs and ext2/3/4 for the main partition. Its detailed disk-layout and FAQ pages list exFAT, FAT32, NTFS, UDF, XFS, ext2, ext3 and ext4, but do not mention Btrfs. That is a documentation discrepancy, not proof that Btrfs is unsupported.

File system Status in Ventoy documentation Important practical point
exFAT Listed; documented default Ventoy describes it as suitable for USB drives and broadly compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac.
FAT32 Listed on the homepage and detail pages Ventoy explicitly says ISO files larger than 4 GB are supported; the retrieved pages do not state a maximum ISO size.
NTFS Listed A practical option when the drive will primarily be used with Windows.
UDF Listed Supported as a main-partition choice; no performance ranking is provided.
XFS Listed Ventoy warns that the USB is unavailable in Windows and unsuitable for installing Windows from the drive.
ext2, ext3, ext4 Listed Ventoy gives the same Windows-availability and Windows-installation warning as for XFS.
Btrfs Listed on the current homepage only Because the detailed pages omit it, confirm support for your current release before formatting a mission-critical drive.

exFAT: the default choice

Ventoy defaults the main partition to exFAT. Its disk-layout documentation says this choice is intended to work across Windows, Linux and Mac and to suit USB storage. For a general-purpose multiboot drive shared among different computers, exFAT is the least surprising starting point.

FAT32: supported, including large ISO handling

FAT32 is a supported main-partition option. Ventoy’s homepage explicitly states that ISO files larger than 4 GB are supported, so you should not conclude that selecting FAT32 makes Ventoy incapable of handling a large ISO. The retrieved Ventoy material does not publish a maximum ISO size, so do not substitute an invented limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NTFS: useful for Windows-centered workflows

NTFS is included in Ventoy’s supported list and can be sensible when the USB will be managed mainly from Windows. The documentation does not provide speed benchmarks comparing NTFS with exFAT or any other choice, so choose it for compatibility requirements rather than an assumed performance advantage.

UDF: supported but not ranked

UDF appears in Ventoy’s lists for the main partition. Ventoy does not publish comparative performance or host-compatibility measurements for UDF in the material cited here. Use it when a known workflow requires it, not because it is presented as faster.

XFS and ext2/3/4: Linux-oriented trade-offs

Ventoy lists XFS and ext2/3/4, but its disk-layout documentation warns that these formats make the USB unavailable in Windows and unsuitable for installing Windows from that drive. They are therefore appropriate only when you accept a Linux-focused workflow and do not need the USB to function as a Windows-accessible installation medium.

Btrfs: treat the documentation mismatch seriously

The homepage for the current 2026 page state includes Btrfs, whereas the detailed disk-layout and FAQ lists retrieved for this guide do not. If Btrfs is essential, check the current Ventoy documentation or the documentation bundled with your exact release before creating the drive. Do not present either page set as a definitive universal answer while they disagree.

How Ventoy’s two-partition layout works

  • The first, larger partition: this is the user-data partition where you copy ISO and other supported image files. Its file system is the choice discussed above.
  • The second partition: this is an EFI System Partition with a FAT file system for Ventoy’s EFI boot files. It is separate from the file system used for your image collection.

Installing Ventoy formats the USB drive and erases its existing data, so copy anything important elsewhere first. After installation, adding another image normally means copying the file to the first partition; it does not mean formatting the drive again. Ventoy’s getting-started documentation says later updates preserve files on that first partition.

The FAQ also specifies that, when reformatting the first partition, the cluster-size value must be at least 2048. The retrieved documentation does not define the unit for that value, so use the exact setting and explanation shown by your current Ventoy release rather than adding an assumed unit.

Which image and ISO formats can Ventoy boot?

Ventoy’s homepage describes direct boot support for these image types:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Image type Typical use Ventoy’s stated support
ISO Operating-system installers, live systems and utilities Supported; ISO files larger than 4 GB are explicitly supported.
WIM Windows Imaging Format environments Supported.
IMG Disk and utility images Supported.
VHD/VHDX Virtual hard-disk images Supported; the homepage writes this as VHD(x).
EFI EFI applications or bootable EFI files Supported.

The operating-system families named by Ventoy include Windows and WinPE, Linux, ChromeOS, Unix, VMware and Xen. Support for an extension means Ventoy recognizes that kind of file; it does not guarantee that every image will boot on every computer.

Additional files documented by Ventoy’s vlnk feature

Ventoy’s vlnk documentation gives examples including .vhd, .vhdx, .vtoy (a Linux virtual disk), .efi and .dat persistence files.

A .vlnk file is a link that lets Ventoy boot an image stored on another disk. This is different from copying the image onto the Ventoy USB. The same documentation identifies .dat as a Linux persistence file and says it must be on the same side as its associated ISO. It should not be described as a general-purpose bootable image format.

Where should image files be placed?

Copy image files anywhere on the first, larger partition. Ventoy searches directories and subdirectories recursively, so you can organize a large collection into folders such as operating systems, recovery tools or testing images without putting everything in the partition root.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a folder should not appear in Ventoy’s search, place a .ventoyignore file in that directory. The FAQ says the exclusion applies to that directory and its descendants. This is useful for keeping duplicate, archived or unfinished images out of the boot menu without moving them off the drive.

Compatibility is broader than extension recognition

Ventoy reports that it has tested more than 1,400 image files and claims support for more than 90% of distributions listed by Distrowatch. These are Ventoy project figures shown on its 2026 homepage, not an independently verified success rate. They cannot promise that a particular ISO will boot on your particular firmware, storage controller or computer.

Ventoy’s compatible-image documentation describes a mechanism that an operating-system distribution can use to mark an ISO as Ventoy-compatible. The mark can be either a ventoy.dat or VENTOY.DAT file in the ISO root, or the fixed string VENTOY COMPATIBLE in a Primary Volume Descriptor Publisher, Preparer or Application field. This marker communicates compatibility information; it is not a guarantee that every machine will boot the image successfully.

The project homepage currently shows Ventoy 1.1.17, released July 24, 2026. Because image behavior and documentation can change between releases, match troubleshooting advice to the Ventoy version installed on your drive.

Choosing a file system for your use case

Your priority Most defensible starting point Reason and limitation
One USB shared among Windows, Linux and Mac exFAT It is Ventoy’s default and is documented as cross-platform; no benchmark establishes that it is fastest.
Windows-focused file management NTFS or exFAT Both are listed; choose according to the computers and tools that must read the drive.
Need to install Windows from the USB exFAT, FAT32 or NTFS Avoid XFS and ext2/3/4 because Ventoy warns they are unsuitable for installing Windows.
Linux-only environment needing a Linux-native file system XFS or ext2/3/4 may fit Accept that Windows will not be able to use the USB according to Ventoy’s warning.
Btrfs required by your workflow Verify the exact release first The homepage and detailed documentation do not agree on whether it belongs in the supported list.

Installation and everyday use

  1. Back up the USB. Ventoy installation formats the drive and erases existing data.
  2. Install Ventoy to the USB. Keep the default exFAT choice unless your host-system requirements call for another listed file system.
  3. Confirm the two-partition layout. The larger first partition is for your files; the smaller FAT EFI System Partition contains Ventoy’s boot files.
  4. Copy image files. Place ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX or EFI files on the first partition, in any directory structure.
  5. Boot the computer from the USB. Select the image in Ventoy’s menu and let the target system’s firmware and the image’s own boot process continue.
  6. Maintain the collection. Add or remove image files as ordinary files. Ventoy’s documented workflow does not require reformatting for each new image, and its update process preserves files on the first partition.

Troubleshooting common choices

Symptom Likely issue Action
Windows cannot use the USB after formatting The main partition uses XFS or ext2/3/4 Recreate the drive with exFAT, FAT32 or NTFS if Windows access is required. Recreating the drive erases data.
An image is not shown in Ventoy’s menu The file is outside the first partition, inside an excluded directory, or not one of the supported image types Move it to the first partition, check for a .ventoyignore file in its directory, and confirm the extension.
A large ISO is the concern An assumption that FAT32 prevents Ventoy from handling it Ventoy explicitly states that ISO files larger than 4 GB are supported. The retrieved material gives no maximum size.
An image is recognized but will not boot Extension support does not guarantee universal compatibility Check the image’s own requirements, the computer’s firmware mode and the Ventoy version; a listed extension alone is not a success guarantee.
You need Btrfs Ventoy’s homepage and detailed pages give different lists Verify current release documentation before formatting the drive or committing important images to it.
