Games Where Bluffing, Lying, and In-Game Cheating Are Part of the Fun

These games make deception part of the rules, from Munchkin’s Cheat! cards to bluffing, secret teams, and traditional Cheat. They are not a license to break the rules.

Some games let you play a card explicitly called Cheat!; others ask you to lie, bluff, or hide your allegiance. Those are very different from breaking a game’s rules. The strongest matches for “games that actively encourage cheating” are games where deception is an authorized mechanic—and the available, verifiable picks do not support a reliable list of ten distinct titles.

What “cheating” means in these games

There are three useful categories: effects the rules explicitly call cheating, permitted lies that other players can challenge, and hidden roles that let one player work against the group. None gives players permission to ignore the rules. For example, Munchkin’s official FAQ says ordinary cheating is not allowed under the current rules; its old permissive line was a joke. The FAQ points to Illuminati as a game where cheating is in the spirit and letter of the rules, but the available product information here does not establish enough detail to include it as a full recommendation.

Games that make deception a rule-governed mechanic

Game What the deception looks like Format and group size Age guidance Listed play time
Munchkin with Munchkin Cheats The expansion adds Cheat! cards that help players put Treasure cards into play. These are authorized card effects, not permission to break the rules. Card game; player count not stated on the cited pages. Not stated on the cited pages. Not stated on the cited pages.
Clue Liars Edition Players draw Truth or Lie Investigation cards, perform the action, and can be challenged with the Liar Button. Board game; 2–6 players. 8+. Not stated on the cited page.
Clue Conspiracy Friends and Conspiracy members form opposing secret teams. Players can bluff, sabotage, and choose whether to share clues. Board game; 4–10 players. 14+. 45 minutes, as listed by Hasbro.
Outliars Players answer quirky questions with numbers; one player lies while the others interrogate the group to find the liar. Party game; 3–20 players. 14+. 20 minutes average, as listed by Asmodee.
Betrayal Deck of Lost Souls A cooperative horror card game with secret roles and a possible traitor trying to thwart the group. Card game; 3–5 players. 12+. About 20 minutes, as listed by Avalon Hill.
Traditional Cheat / Bullshit / I Doubt It Players place cards face down and announce a rank; if another player catches a lie, the liar risks taking the shared pile. Card game; 3–10 players. A standard 52-card deck is sufficient. Not stated by the rules guide. 10–25 minutes, according to the rules guide updated September 1, 2026.

Which kind of deception fits your group?

For explicit, game-authorized “cheat” cards

Munchkin Cheats is the most literal fit: the publisher describes it as a 30-card expansion for any Munchkin game, adding Cheat! cards that help players put Treasure cards into play more often. The product page dates it June 2023. This is cheating only in the card’s name and theme; the effect is part of play as written.

For a clear lie-and-challenge loop

Clue Liars Edition makes the bluff visible and contestable: a player draws an instruction to tell the truth or lie, then opponents can press the Liar Button if they suspect deception. Its 2–6-player range and age-8+ guidance make it the clearest sourced family-oriented choice in this selection.

For teams, suspicion, and betrayal

Clue Conspiracy is built around opposing secret teams, so deception concerns allegiance, sabotage, and what information to reveal. Betrayal Deck of Lost Souls offers a smaller-group alternative: most players cooperate, while a possible traitor secretly works against them. In both, the hidden agenda is part of the rules rather than a license to break them.

For a large party or a regular deck of cards

Outliars is listed for 3–20 players, with a 20-minute average play time and an age recommendation of 14+. Asmodee’s product page showed it as sold out when checked, so availability may change. For a no-special-purchase option, traditional Cheat—also called Bullshit or I Doubt It—uses a standard 52-card deck and has players challenge one another’s claims about the face-down cards. Its rules and timing vary by version, so agree on the rules before playing.

Why this is not a ten-game list

The sourced examples support six distinct entries or entry formats, not ten well-substantiated games. Adding titles merely because they contain hidden information would blur the difference between permitted bluffing, secret roles, and explicit cheat effects. A separate publisher description of Inside Job characterizes it as mostly cooperative trick-taking with an undercover insider, but the available publisher details do not establish enough current mechanics or specifications to compare it responsibly here.
