Looking for games where you are a king and/or have a kingdom? The best fit depends on what you want to rule: a family dynasty, a mythic realm, or a kingdom you build from the ground up. These three games have official descriptions that directly support that premise. They are curated examples, not a definitive top ten: the available evidence does not verify ten distinct titles that meet the brief.

How to choose a game where you play as a king

“Playing as a king” can mean very different things. In a dynastic strategy game, you steer a ruler and family through political decisions over generations. In a story-led game, you inhabit a particular legendary monarch. In a kingdom-building game, you recruit subjects and expand a realm more directly. Use the ruling loop—not just a royal character in the story—to decide which kind of game fits.

  • Choose dynastic strategy if you want to guide a ruling family over a long span of history.
  • Choose Arthurian role-playing strategy if you want a mythic setting and a specific king at its center.
  • Choose kingdom building if you want to recruit subjects and construct a realm through a more immediate loop.

Three games with a direct king or kingdom premise

1. Crusader Kings III — rule through a dynasty

Paradox Interactive describes the premise as: “Live the life of a king, a count, or even an adventurer as you guide your family line through the centuries.” The game’s focus is therefore broader than one monarch’s reign: you customize a ruler and noble house, then guide the family line over time. It is the clearest fit here for players seeking court-and-dynasty grand strategy. Paradox Interactive’s official Crusader Kings III page

2. King Arthur: The Role-playing Wargame — rule a mythic Britain

Paradox’s official collection page describes ruling the land as Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon, amid chivalry, magic, and myth. That makes it the story-led, legendary-king option in this selection rather than a general-purpose dynasty simulator. Paradox Interactive’s King Arthur collection page

3. Kingdom series — build a realm from horseback

The official Kingdom site says players take the role of a king or queen on horseback, recruit subjects by giving them gold, and build a kingdom. That makes the series a more immediate kingdom-building contrast to the court- and dynasty-centered approach of Crusader Kings III. The site also describes Kingdom III: Rising Realms as an upcoming installment; check the official site for current release status rather than assuming it is available. Official Kingdom site

What this list does—and does not—cover

These examples are supported by official descriptions of playing as a monarch or directly building a kingdom. They are not a ranked top ten, and this selection does not establish which game is objectively best. A fuller ten-game list would need the same kind of title-by-title verification; a king appearing in a story, or a player controlling a nation or army, is not by itself enough to establish that the player meaningfully plays as a king.

Is Crusader Kings III: Royal Court a separate game?

No. Royal Court is an expansion for Crusader Kings III, not a standalone alternative. Paradox describes it as bringing a ruler’s throne room and court to life, with the player as king or emperor. Treat it as an add-on to the base game and check the expansion’s official page for compatibility and edition details before buying. Paradox Interactive’s Royal Court page
