The plans included sponsoring Complexity Gaming’s headquarters in Frisco, Texas; clinics and tournaments; amateur competitions with Matcherino; and collegiate events with Collegiate Star League. They show what GameStop hoped to do—not whether the initiatives rejuvenated the chain. The announcements reviewed here do not establish that every activity took place or that the partnerships remain active today.
What GameStop announced
GameStop described the March 27, 2019 lineup as strategic esports partnerships with Complexity Gaming, Envy, Matcherino, and Collegiate Star League. It also said it would work with esports teams and players on original content and experiential activities. GameStop’s announcement set out several distinct strands of activity.

- Facility sponsorship: GameStop planned to title-sponsor Complexity Gaming’s new headquarters at The Star in Frisco, Texas. SEC-filed shareholder materials described the GameStop Performance Center as an 11,000-square-foot facility with a public gaming area. The shareholder materials establish the announced size and public-area plan, not its current status.
- Amateur clinics and tournaments: GameStop planned live and virtual educational events where amateur players could learn from professionals and practice. The company said it would participate in hundreds of amateur tournaments during 2019; that was an announced plan, not a verified completed count.
- Matcherino competitions: GameStop characterized Matcherino as a crowdfunding resource for esports organizers, prize tournaments, and streamers, and tied the relationship to its planned amateur tournament activity.
- Collegiate Star League activations: GameStop planned retail-partner support across digital platforms and at a Summer School League, a fall 2019 campus tour, and the 2020 CSL Grand Finals. The announcement does not independently confirm that those events occurred as planned.
How the partnerships were meant to reach players
The initiative was not limited to a facility or tournament sponsorship. GameStop said it would collaborate with teams and players on content and experiences, while a separate partner announcement from OpTic Gaming described plans for in-store content, live and virtual Gaming Clinics drawing on OpTic athletes, and opportunities for fans to meet players and creators. OpTic’s announcement provides the partner-side description of those plans.

GameStop also announced a planned fighting-game clinic with Justin Wong in June 2019. The release described a 45-minute clinic, divided into shorter videos intended to help amateur players improve. That announcement documents the proposed format and length, but does not verify that the videos were released. GameStop’s June announcement gives the details.

Why GameStop said it was investing in esports
GameStop CMO Frank Hamlin framed the effort as player development and a route toward professional competition. In the March 2019 announcement, he called the ambition to become “the unofficial pop warner league of esports,” describing fun and distinctive cultural experiences for players and preparation for a next generation of professionals. That quote is the company’s stated aspiration, not evidence of results.
The rationale fit GameStop’s broader strategic language later in 2019. In its September fiscal-results announcement, the company said its plan included optimizing the core business, making stores social and cultural gaming hubs, building digital capabilities, and transforming vendor and partner relationships. Esports partnerships aligned with the cultural-hub and partnership themes, but alignment does not demonstrate that the strategy succeeded. GameStop’s fiscal Q2 2019 announcement outlines that wider plan.

Did the partnerships rejuvenate GameStop?
The available announcements establish what GameStop and its partners said they intended to do; they do not establish a business turnaround. The cited materials provide no attendance, sales, customer-retention, profitability, or return-on-investment results for the esports initiative. Nor do they confirm that every announced tournament, campus activation, or clinic was completed.

The sources cited here do not establish whether the partnerships, GameStop Performance Center arrangement, or related programs remain active in 2026. The strongest supported conclusion is that GameStop presented esports as one way to make gaming culture and player experiences part of its retail strategy—not that the effort demonstrably rejuvenated the chain.
