Short answer: A March 2025 leak, reported by Tom’s Guide on April 3, 2025, indicated that GameStop could offer up to $175 in credit toward a Nintendo Switch 2 for a Switch OLED. The reported credit was $125 for a standard Switch and $100 for a Switch Lite.
That is not the same as a currently confirmed promotion. As of August 18, 2026, Nintendo lists the Switch 2 at a U.S. MSRP of $449.99, while GameStop’s current general trade-in page does not verify that historic $175 offer. Check the live terms and call your local store before handing over your console.

|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch OLED | $175 | $274.99 |
| Standard Nintendo Switch, V1 or V2 | $125 | $324.99 |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | $100 | $349.99 |
The final column is a simple calculation using Nintendo’s current $449.99 MSRP and the reported credit amounts. Your actual cost could differ because of sales tax, the console’s inspected condition, missing components, the eligible Switch 2 SKU, and the promotion’s redemption rules.
The $175 amount was the reported maximum, not a universal discount. It applied to the Switch OLED in the leaked table. A standard Switch or Switch Lite owner was reportedly eligible for less, and “credit” should not be interpreted as cash unless the applicable GameStop terms explicitly say so.

Was the $175 offer officially confirmed?
The evidence trail matters:
- A social-media post dated March 31, 2025 reportedly showed the tiered GameStop trade-in credits.
- Tom’s Guide reported the figures on April 3, 2025, attributing them to that post and a TechRadar report.
- The coverage described the numbers as leaked or expected values rather than a fully published GameStop promotion with complete terms.
- GameStop’s currently accessible trade-in page explains general rules but does not verify that specific launch-period offer.
In other words, the figures were leaked and then reported. That does not automatically make them confirmed or currently available.
The original coverage also discussed an expected $399 Switch 2 price. That was the pricing context at the time, not the current official U.S. MSRP. Do not reuse the old $399 calculation without labeling it as historical.
How to check whether a comparable deal is live now
Use this verification workflow before visiting a store:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open GameStop’s current trade page and look for a Switch 2-specific promotion or qualifying product category.
- Check GameStop’s Nintendo Switch 2 shopping page. Its presence confirms a product category, not that a particular console is in stock locally or that the old trade-in offer remains active.
- Call the specific store and ask whether the promotion is active that day.
- Confirm the exact model that qualifies: Switch OLED, standard Switch V1 or V2, or Switch Lite.
- Ask whether the amount is store credit, gift-card value, or a discount applied directly to a purchase.
- Ask whether the credit must be used in the same transaction and whether it applies to the standalone console, a bundle, or only a preorder or in-stock unit.
- Confirm accessory requirements, condition rules, membership requirements, promotion dates, and local inventory.
GameStop’s general terms say trade values depend on condition and necessary components, and that pricing and promotions may vary by location. The program is limited to select products and participating U.S. and Guam stores. GameStop also reserves discretion to modify, suspend, or cancel trades.

Prepare your Switch before trading it in
Preparation can make the inspection smoother, but it does not guarantee the reported promotional amount.
Identify the console
- Determine whether it is a Switch OLED, standard Switch, or Switch Lite.
- Do not assume a Switch Lite qualifies for the OLED amount.
- If you own a standard model, distinguish between the original V1 and later V2 battery revision if the store asks for that information.
Bring the components the offer requires
- Console
- Joy-Con controllers for dockable Switch models
- Dock for models that use one
- Official AC adapter
- HDMI cable
- Any other component listed in the live promotion
GameStop’s general terms indicate that missing necessary components can prevent you from receiving the highest value. They do not, by themselves, prove that every listed accessory is universally required for every promotion.
Test the hardware
- Charge the console and confirm that it powers on.
- Check the screen, buttons, Joy-Con connection, charging port, Wi-Fi, and game-card slot.
- If you have a dockable model, test video output through the dock.
- Look for cracked plastic, screen damage, severe scratches, liquid damage, controller drift, and nonresponsive buttons.
Protect your data
- Remove any game card and microSD card.
- Back up or transfer important saves, screenshots, videos, and user data.
- Remove your Nintendo Account and initialize the console only after confirming that your data has been transferred.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 hub provides current setup, compatibility, and transfer resources. Use those instructions rather than assuming every save file or type of data moves identically.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What can reduce or eliminate the value?
- Missing Joy-Cons, dock, charger, HDMI cable, or other required components.
- A console that does not power on or charge.
- A damaged screen, USB-C port, cartridge slot, or dock.
- Severe Joy-Con drift or nonresponsive buttons.
- Water damage or major cosmetic damage.
- Confusing a Switch Lite or standard model with the OLED tier.
- An expired promotion.
- Restrictions based on store, date, membership, inventory, preorder status, or eligible SKU.
- A credit that can be used only toward a qualifying Switch 2 purchase.
- A difference between an online estimate and the value assigned after in-store inspection.
Do not travel to a store assuming that an old article guarantees a price. Ask for the current offer and the expected value of your exact console before finalizing the trade.

GameStop is usually better for convenience
A trade-in can make sense if you want a quick transaction, intend to buy the Switch 2 immediately, or do not want to photograph, list, pack, ship, and negotiate with buyers. It can also be practical for a heavily used or incomplete console that would be difficult to sell privately.

The drawbacks are that the offer may be lower than a private-sale price, store credit is less flexible than cash, and the value can change after inspection. A trade-in also does not necessarily reserve a Switch 2.
A private sale may produce more net cash
A clean Switch OLED, limited-edition console, or bundle with games and accessories may be worth more to an individual buyer than the reported $175 credit. Extra controllers, cases, and physical games can sometimes be sold separately.

Compare GameStop’s confirmed credit with the realistic net proceeds from a private sale—not with an optimistic listing price. Subtract marketplace fees, shipping, taxes, payment-dispute exposure, fraud risk, and the value of your time. Potential venues include eBay, Mercari, Facebook Marketplace, and OfferUp, but current resale prices should be checked for your exact model and bundle.
Should you trade in your Switch?
| Your situation | Likely better choice |
|---|---|
| You want the fastest, simplest upgrade | GameStop, if the live credit is confirmed |
| You own a clean Switch OLED | Compare private-sale net proceeds with the confirmed credit |
| You own a Switch Lite | Expect the lower model-specific value; verify eligibility |
| Your console is incomplete or heavily used | Get an in-store quote, then compare with private-sale hassle |
| You own a limited edition or valuable bundle | Consider a private sale before trading it in |
| Your household still uses the old console | Keep it as a second or backup system |
| Your saves or digital-game data are not fully transferred | Keep the console until the transfer is complete |
Keeping the old system can be the smarter option if multiple people use it, if you want a backup, if you own a collector’s edition, or if you are still deciding whether the Switch 2 meets your compatibility and gaming needs.
Bottom line
The reported $175 GameStop figure was a 2025 leak for a Switch OLED, alongside reported credits of $125 for a standard Switch and $100 for a Switch Lite. Against the current $449.99 MSRP, those amounts would have produced approximate pre-tax prices of $274.99, $324.99, and $349.99 respectively.
But the old report does not establish that the promotion is active in 2026. Check GameStop’s live trade terms, confirm the value with your local store, and compare the final credit with the realistic net amount from selling privately before surrendering your console.
