GameStop listed pre-owned or refurbished PS5 Pro consoles for as much as $1,399.99 in October 2026—$500 above the $899.99 U.S. recommended price reported for a new console. The higher listing was a retailer price for used/refurbished stock, not an announced Sony price increase. Its timing came weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI’s scheduled November 19, 2026 launch, but no confirmed explanation connects the two.

| PS5 Pro with disc drive | $1,499.99 | $1,424.99 |
These are prices reported for GameStop listings at that time, not a guarantee of current stock or checkout totals. TheStreet also reported Sony’s then-current U.S. recommended price for a new PS5 Pro as $899.99. That makes the standard used/refurbished listing $500 higher, although the condition categories differ. TheStreet’s October 8 report covered the listed prices and comparison.

No. The reported change concerned GameStop’s pre-owned or refurbished listing. It was not an announcement that Sony had raised the recommended price of a new console. Video Games Chronicle reported the GameStop listing at $1,399.99 for a pre-owned standard model and contrasted it with a new console listed at $899.99; it also said GameStop had no new-console stock online when it reported the story. TheStreet likewise said GameStop listed new units at $899.99, with availability differing. Video Games Chronicle’s October 7 report and Tom’s Hardware’s October 6 report also described the listing and constrained availability at the time.

Why did GameStop raise the used-console price?
GameStop had not provided a confirmed public explanation in the cited coverage. Video Games Chronicle described demand ahead of GTA VI as a likely explanation, not an established reason. It also reported that an anonymous Reddit user posted an alleged internal email saying the higher pre-owned price was intentional; that is not a statement from a named company spokesperson, so it does not establish why the price was set. VGC’s report discusses the listing and the alleged email.
What GTA VI’s launch date does—and does not—tell buyers
Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar announced on June 24, 2026 that GTA VI was scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That date makes the timing of GameStop’s pricing news notable, but it does not prove the game caused the repricing. The announcement names PS5 as a platform; it does not say a PS5 Pro is required or establish any PS5 Pro-specific performance advantage. Read the official Take-Two announcement.

How to assess a PS5 Pro listing before buying
A reported listing is not a live price or availability check. Before purchasing, compare the exact console condition and configuration, seller, total checkout cost, and buyer protections. A disc-drive-equipped model and a standard model are not the same listing, and a Pro-member price applies only if you qualify for it.
