The exact folder varies by product, edition and installation choice. It should not normally be placed in either of these Windows folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Current Xara products use 64-bit Windows requirements, but historical releases are not identical. Some older installations may contain both:
gcodec.dll
gcodec64.dll
That does not mean you can substitute one for the other. The application’s architecture and product build determine which file it needs. A 32-bit application may require gcodec.dll, while a 64-bit application may require gcodec64.dll.

This is the primary fix because the DLL is an application-private component.
Identify the program that reports the error
- Close the error message.
- Look at the title bar or wording of the dialog to identify the Xara product.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for
Xaraand note the complete product name. - Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features if the product does not appear in Settings.
- Record whether it is Designer Pro, Photo & Graphic Designer, Web Designer, Web Designer Premium or a MAGIX-distributed edition.
Do not install a different Xara product merely because its name is similar. The correct installer matters.
Reinstall a current Xara purchase
- Open the official Xara account area in your browser.
- Sign in with the account used to purchase or activate the product.
- Open My Products.
- Download the installer for the same product family.
- If Xara offers an update through the application, use Help > Check for updates instead.
- Close Xara and all related programs.
- Run the installer.
- Choose the repair, update or reinstall option when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Xara and activate it with the associated account.
If the installer offers a custom location, use the existing product folder only when you are deliberately repairing that installation. Otherwise, allow the official installer to use its normal location.
Reinstall an older MAGIX-purchased edition
Older Xara products purchased or distributed through MAGIX may not be available from a current Xara download list.

- Sign in with the account associated with the purchase.
- Locate the original Xara or MAGIX product.
- Download its installer using the original serial number if requested.
- Uninstall the damaged installation from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the installer from MAGIX Service Center.
- Activate the product with the original account or serial number.
- Test the application before restoring custom plug-ins or add-ons.
If Xara or MAGIX support gives product-specific instructions involving installation.ini, follow those instructions only for the affected product. The documented path may resemble:
C:ProgramDataxara<program name>installation.ini
Do not delete unrelated registry keys or random files from ProgramData.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the Xara application opens without the DLL message and its normal tools, import functions and document windows work. If the same error appears, check the installation folder before trying anything else.
- Right-click the Xara shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- If that opens a shortcut folder, right-click the shortcut again and select Open file location.
- Search the resulting product directory for
gcodec64.dll.
If the file is absent, the installation is still incomplete or antivirus software removed it. If it is present but the error remains, Windows may be reporting a missing dependency rather than a missing gcodec64.dll itself.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can quarantine a legitimate application file, particularly after an update changes the executable or DLL.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
gcodec64.dll, the Xara executable or the Xara installation folder. - Expand the event and inspect the file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the Xara installation you recognize.
- Do not restore a file merely because its name is familiar.
- Update Windows Security and run a scan of the installer or installation folder first.
- If the detection appears to be a false positive, submit the file to your security administrator or the software vendor for review.
- Reinstall from the official Xara account or MAGIX Service Center rather than restoring an unexplained copy.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to copy a DLL into the application folder. If several unrelated files were quarantined, perform a full scan and investigate possible malware before reinstalling.
Fix 3: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
The wording “specified module could not be found” is misleading. Windows can display it when the named DLL exists but another library required by it does not.

First reinstall Xara. That restores the application’s intended files and dependencies together.
Then test these points:
- Does the error affect one Xara executable or several?
- Does
gcodec64.dllexist in the same folder as the failing executable? - Did the error begin after moving the program to another drive?
- Were files copied manually from another computer?
- Does the application fail only when opening a particular image or video format?
- Does reinstalling the exact product restore normal startup?
Do not assume that installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX or .NET will fix this file. There is no verified evidence that gcodec64.dll is a Windows, Visual C++, DirectX or .NET component. Install a runtime only when the Xara vendor or a separate, clearly identified error specifically requires it.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when multiple programs fail
Use Windows repair commands when several applications are showing corruption errors, Windows itself is behaving abnormally, or the Xara reinstall does not explain the failure. These commands are not the primary repair for an application-private DLL.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window during the scan.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward, then test Xara.
If Windows reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, return to repairing the Xara installation. SFC does not normally supply a vendor DLL that belongs in a Xara program folder.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall graphics drivers only when symptoms are broader
A graphics driver is not the same thing as gcodec64.dll, and updating a driver will not normally restore a missing Xara DLL. Consider this step when Xara and other graphics applications crash, display corrupted output or fail after a Windows update.
Check the driver in Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not remove a working driver without having a replacement available.

Manually locating the correct driver can mean checking the hardware model, Windows edition and architecture, then repeating the process for multiple devices. Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this Xara codec-related DLL is an ActiveX or COM server.
Running this command is therefore not a routine solution:
regsvr32 gcodec64.dll
If it reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not prove the file is defective. It usually means the DLL is not designed to be registered that way.
Use the application’s official installer instead. Application DLLs that are loaded privately from the program folder generally do not need registry registration.

Do not download a replacement DLL
A file with the same name may belong to a different Xara release, architecture or build. It may also be modified, incomplete or bundled with unwanted software. Copying it into System32 can create new conflicts while leaving the original damaged installation untouched.
There is also no authoritative public product-independent version number, file hash, internal description or complete product matrix for gcodec64.dll. Treat version and metadata claims from unofficial download pages as unverified.
The safe sources are:
- Xara My Products for current Xara purchases.
- MAGIX Service Center for eligible older MAGIX-purchased editions.
- The original installer or a verified organizational backup for a matching product build.
If reinstalling still fails
Before contacting Xara or MAGIX support, collect:
- The exact product name and edition.
- The complete error text.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and system architecture.
- The full Xara installation path.
- Whether
gcodec64.dllexists in that folder. - Whether antivirus quarantine lists the file.
- Whether one executable or several Xara programs fail.
- When the failure began.
- Whether it followed an update, cleanup, migration or reinstall.
- The installer or activation account being used.
Do not send an arbitrary DLL downloaded from elsewhere as a supposed fix. Support needs the original product identity and installation history to provide the correct installer or recovery procedure.
