The specified module could not be found.” These messages usually point to a damaged or incomplete Microsoft Works, Office, or Publisher installation, not a missing Windows system file.

The safest fix is to identify which old application is failing, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installation media. Do not download wdbimp.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Works is discontinued. If your real goal is opening an old .wdb database, restoring the DLL may not be enough. You may need to recover the old application in a compatible environment and export the data to a current format.
What causes wdbimp.dll errors
The likely causes are:
- Microsoft Works, Office, or Publisher was partially uninstalled.
- An Office upgrade removed an older mail-merge component.
- The DLL was quarantined or deleted by antivirus software.
- The application installation or one of its dependencies is corrupted.
- A backup restored the program incompletely.
- A 32-bit application is being pointed at an incompatible file.
- The old application does not work correctly with the current Windows version.
- A “module not found” message refers to a dependency rather than
wdbimp.dllitself.
The file is not normally part of the protected Windows component set. Historical Office records place it in an Office application directory, such as an Office or versioned OFFICE folder, rather than in the normal Windows system directory.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application that owns the file
Start here. Replacing the DLL manually often leaves the actual damaged installation untouched.

- Read the error dialog title and message.
- Note whether the error appears when opening Works, Publisher, Word mail merge, or another Office program.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office, or Microsoft Publisher.
- If you use an older Control Panel-based installation, press Windows + R, type
appwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - Look for the matching Works or Office entry.
If the error appears during a mail-merge operation, the affected program is more likely to be Word, Publisher, or an older Office installation than Windows itself.
Repair Works, Office, or Publisher
The available repair option depends on the product and installer type.
- In Installed apps, select the three dots beside the application.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the same program or repeat the mail-merge operation.
For an older installer:
- Insert the original installation disc or mount the original installation image.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the Microsoft application.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair if the option is offered.
- Complete the repair and restart the computer.
A successful repair should remove the missing-file message when the parent application starts. If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the affected application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original media. Use the same product edition, language, and architecture where possible.
Do not mix a DLL from one Office version with another. A file that has the right name can still be the wrong build for the application.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software may have quarantined a legacy DLL, particularly after a scan or cleanup operation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wdbimp.dllor the affected Works, Office, or Publisher executable. - Confirm that the detection belongs to the original application installation.
- Do not restore the file if the program came from an unknown source or its signature cannot be verified.
- Prefer repairing or reinstalling the parent application from original media.
- If you restore a verified file, restart Windows and test the application.
If the file immediately disappears again, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection. A missing DLL error is not a reason to weaken antivirus protection globally.
Fix 3: Reinstall the matching legacy application
If the application is listed but repair does not restore the file, perform a clean reinstall.
- Back up any Works databases, documents, templates, and mail-merge files.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select Microsoft Works, Office, or Publisher.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose the normal application installation, including the database or mail-merge features if the installer offers feature selection.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before applying unrelated system changes.
For a legacy disc installer, right-click the setup program, select Properties > Compatibility, choose a supported older Windows mode if needed, select Run this program as an administrator, and then start the installer.

If the error belongs to an old mail-merge workflow, the matching legacy application may be required.
Fix 4: Check whether the problem is really a Windows component failure
System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They normally do not restore a DLL that belonged only to Works or Office, so use them as a secondary check.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
If DISM reports that it repaired the component store and SFC reports repaired files, test the application after restarting. If both tools report no integrity violations but wdbimp.dll is still missing, return to the Works or Office repair path.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the program that owns wdbimp.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 5: Do not register or copy the DLL blindly
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this legacy database importer is a self-registering component.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a reliable repair:
regsvr32 wdbimp.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32wdbimp.dll
A registration error does not prove that the file is bad. It may simply mean that the DLL was never designed to be registered.
Likewise, do not copy the file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because a download page recommends it. The application may expect the file in its own directory, and a 32-bit program needs its matching 32-bit component. Public records identify the known file as 32-bit; they do not establish a supported 64-bit version.
Manual replacement is appropriate only when you have the original installation media or a verified image from the same product, edition, language, and architecture. Place the file in the application’s original directory, then run the application repair process.
Fix 6: Consider drivers only if other evidence points there
Graphics, chipset, DirectX, Visual C++, and .NET repairs are not evidence-based first-line solutions for wdbimp.dll. Update drivers only if Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem or the affected application has an explicitly documented driver dependency.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean reinstall, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not uninstall a working device without first confirming that you can obtain its correct driver.

Manually checking every device and matching driver packages can mean hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale. Fix 7: Use compatibility troubleshooting on Windows 10 or 11
A repaired legacy application may still fail because the operating system is newer than the software.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the affected Works, Office, or Publisher executable when prompted.
- Test the recommended settings.
- If the program works, save the compatibility settings.
You can also right-click the application shortcut, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and use Run compatibility troubleshooter.
Do not assume that compatibility mode makes discontinued Works fully supported. If the program remains unstable, use a legally available older Windows environment or a virtual machine for recovery, then move the data to a current application.
If you only need to open a .wdb file
If you are not trying to run Works and only need information from an old .wdb database, repairing wdbimp.dll may be unnecessary or insufficient.
Modern Microsoft Access does not natively support Works database files. The practical recovery route is to open the file with a compatible Works installation, export the tables to an intermediate format, and import that data into a current database application. Keep the original .wdb file unchanged and work from a copy.
If no compatible Works installation is available, recover the old application in a controlled legacy environment and export the data there. Do not rely on a random DLL download to provide database conversion capability.
Final checks when the error remains
If repair and reinstall do not work:
- Press Windows + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Find the error at the time of the failed launch.
- Note the failing executable and any additional missing module.
- Test the application with a clean Windows user profile.
- Check whether the error began after a recent uninstall or backup restoration.
- Consider System Restore only if a restore point predates the problem and you understand what applications may be changed.
If the error appears when launching an unknown executable rather than Works or Office, stop restoring files and investigate that executable’s source and digital signature first.

FAQ
Is wdbimp.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence places it in the normal Windows component set. It is associated with Microsoft Works and historical Office or Publisher installations.

Is wdbimp.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify the known file as 32-bit. Do not assume that a 64-bit version exists or that an arbitrary replacement will work with your application.
Should I download wdbimp.dll separately?
