Gearbox’s Risk of Rain 2 expansion Seekers of the Storm launched on August 27, 2024, with a substantial advertised slate of new content—but also with serious defects and some Commencement map features missing. Gearbox acknowledged widespread problems three days later, and later patch notes confirmed that missing map features, including a jump pad, had to be restored. That makes “incomplete” fair as a description of parts of the launch, not as a claim that the expansion contained none of its promised additions.
What Gearbox announced for Seekers of the Storm
In its August 27, 2024 launch announcement, Gearbox described Seekers of the Storm as a large expansion and listed three new survivors, five stages or environments, and three stage variants, alongside other additions. It also introduced the Path of the Colossus and a new story involving the False Son. The announcement establishes the scope Gearbox said it was delivering; it does not prove that every feature worked reliably at launch. Gearbox’s launch announcement on Steam.
What went wrong at launch
On August 30, Gearbox said it had reviewed community feedback and reproduced many reported bugs. One particularly consequential defect made the behavior of multiple game elements depend on frame rate, including physics, attack speed, and movement. Gearbox also listed Mithrix becoming invincible under specific item conditions, broken item highlights, missing HUD damage indicators, geometry problems, Acrid skills failing to deal damage correctly, and a Seeker ability failing for non-host players in multiplayer. The team said its first planned patch was for PC, with consoles to follow, and cautioned: “While this patch won’t solve every issue you’re running into, we’re prioritizing the community reported issues as best we can.” That was an explicit acknowledgment that the initial patch would not resolve every reported problem, rather than a claim that the game was fixed.

Why “incomplete” applies to part of the launch
The clearest evidence for calling the launch incomplete comes from Gearbox’s later Patch 1.3.6 notes. They say the patch “Re-introduced some map features on Commencement that went missing with the launch of Seekers of the Storm, including one of the jump pads up to the final arena.” In other words, at least some existing map features were absent when the DLC launched and were subsequently put back. This is a narrower and more defensible meaning of “incomplete” than saying the expansion shipped without its advertised content. Gearbox announced multiple new survivors and environments, while its later patch record specifically identifies missing Commencement features. The documented omission concerns parts of a map, not the entirety of the DLC’s promised content.

What later updates establish—and what they do not
Later notes show continued work after the launch period. 2K’s v1.3.9 notes, published June 3, 2025 and updated September 3, 2025, describe a memory optimization update across platforms and list further fixes involving DLC characters and stages. 2K’s v1.3.9 patch notes.
These updates document repairs and optimization, but the available notes do not certify that every launch bug was fixed on every platform. Gearbox’s August 30 statement distinguished PC patch timing from console follow-up; the later update notes do not provide a complete platform-by-platform resolution record for every issue named at launch.

What the Steam reception snapshot says
At the Steam snapshot accessed in 2026, English-language reviews were 51% positive from 9,510 reviews, while recent English-language reviews were 80% positive from 85 reviews. Steam’s Risk of Rain 2 listing. These figures are time-sensitive snapshots, not permanent scores or proof that the launch defects caused any particular review.

For a purchase decision, separate the launch history from the content question: Gearbox documented a sizable set of additions, but also acknowledged serious bugs and later confirmed that map features were missing at launch and restored in a patch. The cited update notes show work continuing afterward, not a blanket guarantee that every issue is now resolved on every platform.
