These four classes are Horde Siege choices—not Campaign or Versus roles. In Horde Siege, choose Assault for adaptable midrange defense, Breacher for close-range pressure, Marksman for precision and enemy tagging, or Medic for healing and revives. The Coalition says no particular squad composition is required.
Which modes use E-Day classes?
The documented classes—Assault, Breacher, Marksman, and Medic—are selected before each Horde Siege mission. They are not described as class picks for Campaign or Versus. Xbox Wire identifies Horde Siege as a four-player squad activity; Versus is a separate 4v4 mode with common starting weapons and equipment and no weapon mods. The Coalition’s July 2026 multiplayer deep dive explains the class system, while Xbox Wire’s October 1, 2026 update describes the four-player mode. As of October 4, 2026, E-Day is available in early access; Xbox’s product page lists October 6, 2026 as the release date: Gears of War: E-Day | Xbox.

How do the four classes differ?
Each class pairs a distinct starting loadout with a combat bonus, a progression track, and Tactical Gear that operates on a cooldown. The clearest way to compare them is by engagement distance, squad contribution, Tactical Gear, and passive bonus.
| Class | Strength and preferred approach | Tactical Gear | Combat bonus | Practical tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | Flexible midrange fighting and objective defense; gains value from fighting in cover. | Sonic Disruptor stuns incoming waves, creating an opening while defending. | Damage boost in cover. | Its general-purpose profile is less specialized than Breacher’s close-range pressure, Marksman’s critical-hit focus, or Medic’s team recovery. This is a role-based inference, not a stated penalty. |
| Breacher | Close-range damage and frontline pressure; suited to pushing into dangerous areas. | Adrenaline Injector refills health and reduces damage during a push. | Improved resistance to status effects and melee damage. | Close-range emphasis can be less suited to encounters that reward long sightlines and precision. This is an inference, not a published range penalty. |
| Marksman | Precision damage at longer sightlines, with enemy information that can help the whole squad. | Pulse Drone tags Locust units for the player and squad. | Improved critical-hit damage. | Less specialized for close-range rushing or healing allies than Breacher and Medic, respectively. This describes role focus, not a stat penalty. |
| Medic | Midrange support that can still fight while watching squad health. | Stim Vaporizer heals and revives Gears in range, including downed soldiers from other squads. | Faster health regeneration. | Its stated focus is team sustain rather than Breacher-style close-range pressure or Marksman-style critical-hit specialization. This is an inference, not an official weakness. |
Which E-Day class should you choose?
- Choose Assault if you want adaptable midrange combat, reliable use of cover, and a tool for disrupting a wave near an objective.
- Choose Breacher if you prefer to close distance, take pressure, and create space during a push.
- Choose Marksman if precision damage and tagging Locust for squad awareness suit your approach.
- Choose Medic if you want to recover downed teammates and support the squad without giving up the ability to fight.
These are recommendations based on the published class descriptions, not comparative playtest results. The Coalition says classes are intended to complement one another but that “there is no ‘right’ way to set up a squad.” It explicitly allows four players to choose the same class, including four Breachers. A mixed squad can offer broader role coverage; it is an option, not a required or proven optimal setup.

How does class progression work?
According to the July 2026 developer deep dive, each completed mission earns class XP, and each class has 30 levels at launch. Progression unlocks loadout weapons and equipment, Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods, and unique Weapon Mods; at key milestones, a class gains base health and damage. Tactical Gear Mods can change cooldown, range, and effects, so a class’s starting kit is not its only possible configuration. These are launch-era details and may change as the game is updated.

The official class descriptions establish different roles and qualitative perks, but the consulted materials do not provide class win rates, pick rates, numerical damage comparisons, or a ranking that proves one class is strongest. The situational tradeoffs above follow from each class’s specialization; they should not be read as hidden debuffs or a tier list.
