Choose Horde Siege if you want cooperative PvE missions, class progression, and objectives shared across squads. Choose Versus if you want structured 4v4 PvP, equal starting loadouts, and tactical fights over map position and Power Weapons. If you are undecided, Versus Social or Player vs Bot playlists offer a way to learn maps and modes; Horde Siege has shorter and longer mission options.
What is the difference between Horde Siege and Versus?
Horde Siege is a cooperative mode against Locust enemies. It puts 12 players into three squads of four, each pursuing missions on the same large map. Squads can cooperate or compete for resources and rewards, and shared encounters may bring them together. Xbox Wire’s multiplayer overview describes this 12-player structure.
Versus is player-versus-player competition. Every mode is 4v4, with matching starting weapons and equipment for both teams and weapon mods disabled. The Coalition says this design is intended to make teamwork, skill, and decisions central, while teams contest Power Weapons and map positions. Which mode suits what you want to play?

These are preference-based recommendations, not a claim that one mode is universally better. The developer describes both as using E-Day’s updated movement and cover mechanics: Versus favors tighter battles, while Horde Siege makes room for broader flanks and arenas. The Coalition’s gameplay update discusses that shared foundation and how the modes use it.

What happens in a Horde Siege mission?
Horde Siege has three playlists, with developer-estimated mission lengths rather than independently measured averages:

Other missions can ask squads to secure, calibrate, repair, or defend a R.I.G. Optional secondary tasks can award Weapon Parts, equipment, and squad buffs. Players collect shared Energy, then choose individually how to spend it at Supply Caches. A mission ends with extraction; a squad needs to extract successfully to keep the Weapon Parts it collected during that mission. What are the Versus modes?
At launch, Versus has four core modes and six new maps. Their objectives differ, but all use the 4v4 format:
- Team Deathmatch: Eliminate enemy players’ lives. Respawn locations change dynamically.
- Conquest: Occupy and defend zones; teams score by holding them for enough time.
- Demolition: Carry a neutral bomb to an enemy site, plant it, then defend it. There are no respawns, and three detonations win.
- Crucible: Carry a Power Core into a moving, shrinking zone and defend it to score.
The developer’s official Versus overview describes the four modes, launch maps, and equal-start design. The cited information does not specify exact match durations, so a shorter or more contained match should not be assumed solely from choosing Versus.

Which mode is better for beginners?
There is no single beginner mode for every player. If you want to learn maps and tactics in a lower-pressure setting, try Versus Social or Player vs Bot before entering competitive play. If you prefer learning by working with others toward objectives, Horde Siege offers class roles and missions, but its longer playlists require a bigger time commitment. Start with Blitz if you want the shortest documented Horde Siege option.
Availability and launch context
Gears of War: E-Day launched in early access for Premium Edition buyers before its general launch on October 6, 2026. The Coalition’s editions and platform page lists Xbox Series X|S and PC, as well as access through Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. It also cautions that online multiplayer may require a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer; check the current terms for your platform and region.

The August 2026 open beta contained only a subset of launch content, so its available modes should not be treated as the complete launch lineup. The Coalition’s beta FAQ covers that distinction. For launch-period scheduling, Windows Central reported on September 30, 2026 that Season 1: Emergence was scheduled through December 1, with three two-week events, and Versus Ranked was scheduled to begin October 13. Those dates are time-sensitive; consult the game’s current announcements for the latest schedule.
