What the estimates say

Alinea also estimates 230,000 paid copies sold since early access began on October 1 and the full launch followed on October 6, 2026. Its estimate breaks that total into 168,000 Steam copies and 62,000 copies on Xbox console and PC. These are estimated copy sales, not player counts.

What “1.7 million Game Pass players” means
Alinea estimates that 1.7 million people accessed Gears of War: E-Day through Game Pass. That is an access estimate, not a count of copies sold and not necessarily a measure of unique people who completed or actively played the game. Subscribers can access a game in the catalog without buying a copy.
Alinea separately estimates 722,000 paid for the Premium upgrade. Xbox lists that upgrade for $30.00 in the US store and says it requires either the base game or an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership. The figures do not show how many Game Pass subscribers would otherwise have purchased the game at full price. Alinea’s comparison cannot establish that counterfactual or quantify sales lost because of subscription access.
Launch timing and availability
Xbox says early access began worldwide on October 1, 2026, and the worldwide launch followed on October 6. The official announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam, and says cloud gaming is available through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. Mike Crump, studio head at The Coalition, stated in the October 1 Xbox Wire announcement that early access began at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC and the full launch would take place October 6 at the same time.
