In an interview published by 4Gamer on October 9, 2026, he imagines a future in which AI generates video and music in real time at roughly the speed of current game consoles, turning a person’s communication and imagination into content. He puts that capability around 2028–2029, but the interview does not identify the source of that estimate or present it as an industry consensus.
What does Kutaragi mean by “daydreaming becomes content”?
Kutaragi’s key phrase in Japanese is 「妄想することがコンテンツになる」—“daydreaming itself becomes content.” In his 4Gamer interview, he describes a shift in which a person would not only consume a story made in advance, but help prompt and shape an experience as it unfolds. The AI would generate scenarios, characters and short-form video in response to the user’s imagination and communication.

In English: “When that happens, all content will change. Communication and daydreams will become content. Daydreaming itself becomes content.” Kutaragi suggests that such an experience may eventually no longer be called a game. That is a prediction about a possible category of entertainment, not an announcement of a product that currently replaces games. 4Gamer’s October 9, 2026 interview presents the idea as his view.

What exists now, and what is still a forecast?
The distinction is between AI-assisted media production and real-time, interactive generation. Kutaragi points to AI-made Chinese microdramas as an example of media production already changing. He describes AI-produced characters and backgrounds, while noting that the viewing experience is not yet as interactive as a game and the content is not being generated in real time.
In a separate interview published October 8, 2026, Kutaragi said: 「今はまだリアルタイムに生成されているわけではありません。でもあと2年で変わると見ています。」 In English: “It is not being generated in real time yet. But I think that will change in two years.” The timing is his expectation, not evidence that the transition is underway on a confirmed schedule. The interview does not independently audit the microdrama productions he cites. GameBusiness.jp’s interview distinguishes those current workflows from the future real-time experience he imagines.

When does Kutaragi expect the technology?
In the 4Gamer interview, Kutaragi estimates that real-time AI generation of video and music at current game-console speed could arrive around 2028–2029. The source does not name who made the underlying estimate, explain its technical assumptions or establish that other industry figures share it. Treat the dates as Kutaragi’s forecast, not a delivery date or settled prediction.

The distinction matters: producing a video in a workflow and then watching it is different from generating a personalized audiovisual experience at console-like speed while responding to a user. The present-day example he cites does not prove that the latter capability—or its timeline—is achievable.

How does this connect to making games?
Kutaragi’s prediction is also a proposal about creative work. In the GameBusiness.jp interview, he argues that large teams and fixed development plans can limit flexibility, and imagines AI acting as a collaborator that helps smaller teams work more freely. He put it this way: 「AIというのは,一緒に進化する相棒なんです。」—“AI is a partner that evolves together with us.”
That is a vision for how creators might use AI, not a claim that AI can independently make successful games or that existing development teams will disappear. The interview frames AI as a tool for collaboration and experimentation; the real-time, personalized entertainment he describes remains a separate future possibility.

What did he say about the potential market?
Kutaragi described the global game market as worth more than ¥30 trillion and speculated that entertainment could reach ¥3,000 trillion if the kind of transformation he predicts occurs. Both figures are his statements in the 4Gamer interview; it provides no independent methodology for the current-market figure, and the larger number is speculation—not a measured market forecast. The interview also followed the September 29, 2026 opening ceremony for the University of Electro-Communications’ Creative Entertainment Research and Education Center, where Kutaragi participated in a panel. It identifies him as a special visiting professor at the university and as the creator of PlayStation.
How to understand the prediction
- It is a personal forecast: Kutaragi is describing what he thinks entertainment could become, not announcing a confirmed technology roadmap.
- The experience would be interactive and personalized: the imagined content responds to a user rather than remaining a fixed, pre-authored work.
- Today’s AI-made media is not the same thing: the microdramas he cites are an example of production changes, not proof of real-time interactive generation.
- “Replace video games” overstates the claim: Kutaragi’s point is that a future experience might outgrow the label “game,” not that current games are already being displaced.
A contemporaneous Push Square report published October 2, 2026 summarizes Kutaragi’s broader comments on games and creative curiosity, citing other coverage. For the daydreaming prediction and its timeline, the 4Gamer and GameBusiness.jp interviews are the direct sources.
