Gears of War: E-Day has the series’ weighty cover-shooter combat, but PC Gamer’s review-in-progress finds that the campaign stretches its strengths too thin. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus: other reviewers praise the single-player adventure, while the cited reviews have not yet delivered a complete verdict that includes multiplayer.
What is Gears of War: E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. Xbox describes it as an origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde begins its invasion. Xbox’s game page provides the official premise.

The story also features Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes as members of Bravo Squad, according to Tom’s Guide. Windows Central describes the invasion’s tone as horror, war, survival, and desperation, with civilian suffering among its defining elements. That framing makes E-Day a prequel about the shock and human cost of the Locust emergence, rather than simply another later chapter in the series’ war.
How does the shooting and movement feel?
The Coalition says E-Day was built from scratch while retaining Gears’ cover-shooter identity. Its gameplay update describes cover-to-cover movement as central, with more types and heights of cover and additional actions. It also says projectiles use simulated ballistics, so players may need to lead moving targets at a distance.

- PRE‑ORDER BONUS CONTENT — Unlock the Exfil Dom Character Skin and the Exfil Weapon Skin Set in-game at launch.*
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
That design foundation supports the strongest shared point in the early reviews: the shooting feels good. PC Gamer’s assessment is that combat rewards seeking better ground, particularly on Hardcore. Windows Central highlights quicker sprinting, vaulting and climbing, along with more dynamic low cover. Those impressions suggest a familiar Gears rhythm with more mobility, though they do not guarantee that every encounter or enemy will feel equally satisfying.
Why does PC Gamer say the campaign is a slog?
PC Gamer’s headline judgment is that the shooting is strong but the campaign is overstretched. The criticism is about pacing and structure, not a claim that the core combat fails. Windows Central raises related but distinct concerns: it questions whether the world’s apparent openness translates into meaningful freedom, and says large enemies can feel like bullet sponges.

These are review opinions, and they should not be collapsed into a single consensus. GamesRadar+ reports a satisfying campaign and gives the single-player experience a positive verdict. Tom’s Guide calls E-Day an excellent entry in the series. The early coverage therefore points to a real divide: some reviewers find the campaign’s length and structure weaken its action, while others find the single-player journey rewarding.
How long is the campaign?
GamesRadar+ reviewer Andrew Brown says he completed the five-act campaign in 16 hours, including most side objectives. That is one reviewer’s playthrough, not an official estimate or a promise of how long a player will take. Difficulty, exploration, and play style can affect an individual run.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The number gives useful context for the pacing debate: a campaign can occupy a substantial stretch of play and still feel satisfying to one reviewer but overlong to another. The reviews differ in their experience of that structure rather than establishing one universally correct completion time or verdict.
Is this a complete review verdict?
No. The cited PC Gamer review remains unscored because multiplayer was unavailable to its reviewers before release. GamesRadar+ likewise gives a positive single-player verdict while reserving judgment on the complete game until its reviewer returns to assess multiplayer. These articles assess the campaign, not every part of the finished package.
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether the game is right for you: the current critical split is mainly about the single-player campaign’s pacing, openness, and encounter feel. The cited coverage does not establish a complete post-launch multiplayer assessment or an aggregate score.
