Its upgraded presentation, included post-launch content and cross-platform play make it an inviting place to start. For players who finished the original or Ultimate Edition recently, though, the familiar campaign means the case for returning rests mostly on technical improvements, platform access and multiplayer.
What Gears of War: Reloaded is—and what it includes
Released on August 26, 2025, Reloaded remasters the first Gears of War, originally released in 2006. It is not a remake with a newly designed campaign or a sequel. Xbox says the package includes the post-launch content from Ultimate Edition: a bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps and modes, and classic characters and cosmetics. Xbox Wire’s announcement and its launch guide set out the release and included features.
That combination matters most if this is your first time playing the series: you get the first game and its added content in one modern release. If you already own and recently played Ultimate Edition, the content itself is less of a reason to revisit it.
Why the remaster looks and feels modern
The upgrade is substantial in presentation, but its exact performance depends on platform and hardware. Xbox lists 4K support, HDR, remastered textures, lighting, shadows and reflections, and Dolby Atmos. Its store description specifies a 60 FPS campaign and multiplayer support up to 120 FPS; those are official targets or specifications, not a guarantee that every setup will display those rates. Your hardware and display matter.

In an Xbox Wire podcast interview, The Coalition’s technical director Kate Rayner compared one scene across versions: 1280×720 at 30 FPS on the Xbox 360 original, 1080p in Ultimate Edition, and 4K at 60 FPS in Reloaded. That is a comparison of the scene she discussed, not a universal performance claim for every platform. The interview transcript provides that context.
Platform-specific features
The release is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam. On PC, Xbox lists ultrawide support, a benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard support, controller remapping, FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.5 Super Resolution. On PS5, PlayStation lists DualSense haptics, controller-speaker support and adaptive triggers; on PS5 Pro, it lists PlayStation Super Spectral Resolution and improved shadow and reflection quality. These are platform features, not requirements to play. PlayStation’s product page describes its console features.

Who should play it—and who can wait
If you are new to Gears
Reloaded is a straightforward entry point: it presents the first game with modern visual features, streamlined control options listed by Xbox, and its bonus campaign act and multiplayer content. The campaign supports two-player co-op, so a new player can also start with a friend. Reviewers have highlighted its value as an introduction, but that is a critical judgment rather than a promise that every newcomer will prefer it. If you played the original or Ultimate Edition recently
The campaign remains familiar: the remaster does not add new missions, mechanics or weapons. Tom’s Guide wanted more new material, while TechRadar cautioned that someone who recently finished the campaign and has little interest in multiplayer may have limited reason to buy it again. For recent returners, the strongest reasons are the new presentation, performance targets, access on another platform, or wanting to play the included multiplayer with friends—not a substantially different campaign.

If you are returning after a long break
The visual refresh and the convenience of having the added content together may make the return worthwhile, especially if you have changed platforms or want to play with people on another system. Whether that is worth the price depends on how much you value those upgrades and shared play compared with replaying a familiar campaign.
Co-op, multiplayer and cross-platform play
Campaign co-op supports two players; Versus supports up to eight. Xbox says cross-play works across platforms without requiring a Microsoft account. A Microsoft account is required for cross-progression and for cross-platform invites. On PlayStation, online console multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, sold separately. Check the relevant platform’s current requirements before playing online. Xbox’s launch guide and PlayStation’s product page describe these conditions.

Platforms, Game Pass and price
Xbox’s launch announcement listed PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate availability at launch. Subscription catalogs change, so check the current catalog rather than assuming the game remains included. The same May 2025 announcement gave a suggested retail price of $39.99; that was the announcement-era price, not a current price quote. Check your platform’s store for present pricing and availability. The announcement lists the platforms and launch pricing information.

How to decide whether to play or buy
- Start here if you have not played the first Gears and want its campaign with current-platform features.
- Consider it for co-op or cross-play if friends are playing on different platforms; account and online-subscription conditions still apply.
- Wait for a sale or skip it if you recently completed the original or Ultimate Edition, do not care about multiplayer, and mainly want new campaign content.
- Check your platform’s store first if you are relying on a subscription or targeting a particular resolution or frame rate.
