Gears of War: Reloaded is a worthwhile PC remaster for newcomers and returning fans who want the original campaign with a cleaner modern presentation, but it does not update the original’s combat design. Its advertised PC features are broad, and PC Gamer found modern desktop GPUs handled the game comfortably in its evaluation. That coverage also reports stage-load frame-rate wobbles and hit-box quirks, while handheld PCs were more constrained. Whether it is worth playing depends on how much you value the original Gears experience—and whether you are on a desktop or handheld.
What Gears of War: Reloaded is—and what it changes
Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original Gears of War, not a remake or a sequel. It launched on August 26, 2025, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire announced a $39.99 launch price and availability through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate at launch; current price and subscription-catalog status can change. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement and the Steam listing describe it as the original game with its post-launch content, including a bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps, characters, and cosmetics.
Windows Central’s review, conducted on Xbox Series X rather than PC, describes Reloaded as building on the earlier Ultimate Edition with further visual and frame-rate improvements and new accessibility options. That console review praised the image quality, but its performance observations should not be read as PC testing. Windows Central’s review also notes that the underlying game remains essentially the same as the 2015 edition.
How the PC version is equipped
The official PC listings advertise ultrawide support, a benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard, controller remapping, HDR, AMD FSR 3.1, and NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 Super Resolution. Steam also advertises up to 144 FPS in multiplayer. These are listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every option works on every device or that a particular system will reach that frame rate; higher resolutions and refresh rates require suitable hardware and displays. Steam’s feature listing and Xbox Wire’s launch details describe the supported features.

In an Xbox Wire interview, Coalition representative Kate Rayner said the game has “uncapped frame rates” and supports “4K, but also 5K ultra-wide resolution.” She also cited FSR 3.1, DLSS, and HDR. The benchmark mode is useful for checking how the game behaves on your own system before adjusting settings; it cannot substitute for a guarantee of performance in every scene. The Xbox Wire interview provides the PC feature discussion.
Does Gears of War: Reloaded run well on PC?
PC Gamer’s evaluation found modern desktop GPUs had enough pixel throughput and VRAM bandwidth for the game’s older graphics techniques, and reported comfortable desktop performance. The same coverage describes lower frame rates and sluggish controls on handheld PCs, along with frame-rate wobbles when loading a new stage and hit boxes that could behave inconsistently. These are observations from that publication’s evaluation, not proof that every PC encounters the same issues. PC Gamer’s PC coverage is the relevant source for those performance caveats.

For a desktop, the advertised benchmark mode offers a practical first check: run it on your own hardware, then tune settings to balance image quality and responsiveness. For a handheld, do not assume desktop results carry over; PC Gamer found the smaller form factor more constrained. Neither Steam’s minimum requirements nor a feature list promises smooth play at a specific resolution, preset, or frame rate.
Steam’s published minimum PC requirements
Steam lists the following minimums. They describe the publisher’s stated baseline, not a tested recipe for smooth performance at any chosen settings. Steam’s current product listing gives these requirements.

Does the original Gears gameplay still hold up?
The campaign’s identity is still cover-based third-person shooting built around the Active Reload mechanic. For a newcomer, that focused design is the appeal: the remaster offers the original’s campaign and additional post-launch content without turning it into a later sequel. For a returning player, the same fidelity can be a limitation. Windows Central notes that innovations introduced in later sequels are not part of this game, so Reloaded preserves the older structure rather than modernizing its combat.
The upgrade is primarily about presentation and access, not a new campaign or a redesigned combat system. Windows Central’s favorable image-quality assessment came from Xbox Series X, while PC-specific performance findings come from PC Gamer; those are different evaluations on different platforms.

Solo, co-op, and multiplayer on PC
The game supports solo campaign play, online campaign co-op, and Versus multiplayer. Xbox says cross-play is supported across platforms, and cross-progression is available with a Microsoft account. PC campaign split-screen is unavailable; Xbox’s launch information also says split-screen campaign co-op is not available on handhelds. Check the official launch details for the supported modes and platform qualifications.
Who should play it on PC?
- New to Gears: A good fit if you want the original campaign and its cover-based combat in a remastered presentation.
- Returning fans: More appealing if revisiting the campaign and its included post-launch content is enough; do not expect later sequel mechanics or a new story.
- Desktop PC players: The strongest fit for the PC version based on PC Gamer’s report of comfortable performance on modern desktop GPUs, with the benchmark available for system-specific tuning.
- Handheld PC players: Approach with more caution. PC Gamer reported constrained frame rates and sluggish controls on handheld hardware in its evaluation.
- Players seeking local campaign co-op on PC: This is not the right fit, because PC campaign split-screen is unavailable.
At launch, Xbox listed the game for PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate as well as for purchase. Subscription catalogs and retail prices can change, so check the current listing before deciding how to access it.
