Ultimate Edition’s main remaining distinction is its 2015 Xbox One release—and, for qualifying earlier digital buyers, a free Reloaded upgrade that had a firm cutoff.

What does Reloaded add visually and technically?
Ultimate Edition was a substantial rebuild for its time. Xbox’s 2015 launch coverage described the Xbox One version as a 1080p remaster, with a refreshed campaign and multiplayer experience. Reloaded raises the stated targets: Xbox advertises 4K resolution, a 60 FPS campaign and multiplayer at up to 120 FPS. It also lists HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, 7.1 spatial audio, variable refresh rate (VRR), 4K assets, remastered textures, improved shadows and reflections, enhanced post-processing, improved anti-aliasing and no campaign loading screens. Does Reloaded have a different campaign or more content?
Reloaded is not a different core story. It carries forward Ultimate Edition’s breadth of content, including the bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps and modes, and classic characters and cosmetics. The original Ultimate Edition remaster added five campaign missions that had not previously been available on console; Xbox’s 2015 coverage also listed 19 remastered multiplayer maps. That content history helps explain what Ultimate Edition brought at launch, but it is not a reason to choose it over Reloaded if you want the same material on a newer platform.

For a sense of the visual comparison, The Coalition studio head Mike Crump remarked on the difference between remembered and actual graphics: “It’s always fascinating to see the difference between what you remember your favourite games looking like and what they actually looked like,” Xbox Wire’s August 26, 2025 launch article reports.
How do multiplayer, cross-play and co-op differ?
Reloaded supports two-player campaign co-op and Versus matches for up to eight players. Cross-play is available across platforms. Xbox says a Microsoft account enables cross-progression for campaign and multiplayer, as well as cross-platform invites. Its May 2025 announcement says cross-play itself does not require a Microsoft account; signing in adds those account-linked features. Details are in Xbox’s announcement.

Local play is not identical on every device: the Xbox Store says campaign split-screen is unavailable on PC and handhelds. It also lists console online multiplayer as requiring a separately sold Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer. Check the store listing for current platform-specific terms.
Which version should you get?
If you are buying now
Choose Reloaded if you want to play on a currently listed platform, use cross-play, or get the remastered game with Ultimate Edition’s content. It launched on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PS5 and Steam on August 26, 2025. Xbox announced a $39.99 suggested retail price at launch and day-one access through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate; neither statement establishes today’s purchase price or subscription availability. If you own Ultimate Edition digitally on Xbox
Xbox’s free-upgrade offer was limited to digital Ultimate Edition purchases made before 16:00 UTC on May 5, 2025. It is a historical cutoff, not a general free upgrade for people buying Ultimate Edition now or for physical-copy owners. Check the Xbox account and library associated with the eligible purchase.
If you have a physical Xbox One copy
The announced free upgrade applied to qualifying digital purchases, not physical owners. Reloaded is a separate release; check its listing and your intended platform before buying rather than assuming an Xbox One disc grants access to the newer version.

What Ultimate Edition was in 2015
Ultimate Edition launched as an Xbox One remaster in 2015, with Xbox describing a remastered campaign and multiplayer experience. Its launch feature list included modernized controls, dedicated servers, LAN support, additional multiplayer modes, five campaign missions new to console and 19 remastered maps. Xbox also described a Windows 10 version in June 2015 coverage. Those are period-specific release details, not confirmation of present-day storefront availability.
Reloaded therefore changes the practical package more than the underlying game: it brings the content forward to newer platforms and adds modern presentation and online features. If your question is simply whether Reloaded tells a different story, it does not.
