What is GeForce 537.42?

GeForce 537.42 is a Game Ready Driver in NVIDIA’s Release 535 Windows driver family. It is version 537.42, carries Microsoft WHQL certification, and was released on September 21, 2023.

The package is a 64-bit Windows DCH driver. NVIDIA supplies separate executables for desktop and notebook GeForce products. WHQL means the driver passed Microsoft’s Windows Hardware Quality Labs certification process; it does not mean the driver is bug-free, current, secure against every later-discovered vulnerability, or suitable for every computer. NVIDIA explains the WHQL designation through its driver search documentation.

Item 537.42 details
Driver type GeForce Game Ready Driver
Version 537.42
Branch Release 535
Certification WHQL
Release date September 21, 2023
Package format Windows 64-bit DCH installer
Supported operating systems Windows 11 and Windows 10 64-bit, with Windows 10 version 1803 and later listed in the release notes

Is 537.42 still the latest NVIDIA driver?

No. It was current only around its September 2023 launch. NVIDIA’s official driver search listed GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.74, released July 7, 2026, as the current GeForce Game Ready version on August 9, 2026. That current version will change over time, so treat the date on this statement as important and check the official NVIDIA driver search before installing a driver for ordinary use.

Version 537.42 was also quickly followed by GeForce 537.58, released on October 10, 2023. It was not the final or longest-lived driver in the 537 branch.

What did GeForce 537.42 add?

NVIDIA marketed 537.42 mainly as a Game Ready release for the following games and technologies:

  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, including readiness for DLSS 3.5 and DLSS Ray Reconstruction.
  • Warhaven, with DLSS 3 support.
  • Witchfire, with DLSS 3 support.
  • Party Animals, with DLSS Super Resolution and NVIDIA Reflex support.
  • Counter-Strike 2, with NVIDIA Reflex support.

These are NVIDIA’s driver-readiness and compatibility claims, not guaranteed frame-rate increases. The actual result depends on the GPU, the game version, graphics settings, whether the game implements the technology correctly, and whether the feature is available on that GPU architecture. Installing 537.42 should not be interpreted as a promise of a specific FPS improvement.

Fixed issues in 537.42

The official release notes list no fixed gaming bugs for this release. They do list two fixes involving Octane Render:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Intersection shaders could cause a performance slowdown. This is associated with NVIDIA bug reference 4164876.
  • Using a top-level acceleration structure, or TLAS, with numKeys=2 could produce inconsistent behavior and broken motion keys. This is associated with bug reference 4088077.

Known problems and limitations

537.42 was not universally stable. NVIDIA documented the following open issues and considerations:

Area What can happen What to do
Halo Infinite Significant performance drops can occur on Maxwell-based GPUs. Do not assume 537.42 is an improvement for an older GTX card. Test the specific game and GPU combination, and consider a different supported driver if this is your workload.
DaVinci Resolve A stability fix for heavy memory usage could cause performance degradation in some situations. If Resolve is your primary application, compare the OEM, Studio, or newer NVIDIA driver rather than choosing 537.42 solely because it is WHQL-certified.
Windows 10 HDTV output Some 8-bit HDTVs could incorrectly receive a 12-bit output setting and display a scrambled image. Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Change Resolution, select Use NVIDIA color settings, and set Output color depth to 8 bpc.
NVIDIA Control Panel The Control Panel could encounter installation problems through the Microsoft Store. Complete the driver installation, reboot if requested, and troubleshoot the Microsoft Store component separately if the Control Panel is missing or fails to install.

Notebook behavior can also vary by model. Hybrid graphics, display switching, power management, firmware, hotkeys, and other OEM integrations can make a manufacturer-provided driver a better choice than NVIDIA’s generic notebook package.

GPU compatibility

The release-notes PDF contains the authoritative product tables. The following is a family-level summary, not a replacement for checking the exact model number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supported desktop families

  • Ada Lovelace: GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070, RTX 4060 Ti, and RTX 4060.
  • Ampere: the RTX 3090 Ti through RTX 3050 models listed by NVIDIA, including specified OEM products such as the RTX 3050 OEM.
  • Turing: GeForce RTX 20-series, GTX 16-series, and TITAN RTX products listed in the release notes.
  • Volta: TITAN V.
  • Pascal: TITAN Xp, TITAN X, and listed GeForce GTX 10-series cards.
  • Maxwell: TITAN X, GeForce GTX 900-series, and GeForce GTX 750-series products listed by NVIDIA.

See pages 28–30 of the official release-notes PDF for the exact desktop products and variants. Do not reduce the compatibility claim to all Maxwell-and-newer GPUs; NVIDIA’s product list is more specific.

Supported notebook families

The notebook package lists support for a wide range of mobile products, including:

  • RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070, RTX 4060, and RTX 4050 Laptop GPUs.
  • RTX 30-series and RTX 20-series Laptop GPUs.
  • GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1650 Laptop GPUs.
  • GTX 10-series notebook GPUs.
  • MX450, MX350, MX330, MX250, MX230, MX150, MX130, and MX110.
  • Various 900M- and 800M-series models listed in NVIDIA’s tables.

Support in the generic NVIDIA list does not guarantee that the package is the best driver for a particular laptop. NVIDIA describes its notebook package as a reference driver and recommends checking the notebook manufacturer’s certified driver, especially when the system uses Optimus or hybrid graphics, custom display switching, vendor hotkeys, power-management features, or firmware-specific integration.

Supported operating systems

GeForce 537.42 is intended for:

  • Windows 11.
  • Windows 10 64-bit, with version 1803 and later identified as the documented baseline in the release notes.

It is not the package for:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
  • 32-bit Windows.
  • Linux.
  • macOS.

Although the installer targets Windows 10, this is a driver released in 2023. Do not assume that every current Windows 10 build, system configuration, or future Windows update will receive the same level of support. If the installer reports that the operating system is unsupported, use a driver appropriate for the installed Windows version rather than forcing the package.

Desktop or notebook installer: which one should you use?

Computer Correct package Additional advice
Desktop PC with a desktop GeForce card 537.42 desktop DCH installer Use the desktop executable linked above.
Laptop with a supported GeForce Laptop GPU 537.42 notebook DCH installer Check the laptop manufacturer’s support page first. The OEM package may be better validated for the exact model.
Workstation using RTX professional or Quadro hardware Neither GeForce package by default Use the professional NVIDIA package that matches the product and workload.
Creative application workstation Usually a Studio Driver is worth considering Game Ready and Studio packages target different priorities; neither is automatically the solution to every problem.

Do not install the desktop executable on a notebook simply because the version number matches. Likewise, the professional RTX/Quadro R535 U6 537.42 package is not interchangeable with the GeForce desktop or notebook package. Identical version numbers do not mean identical supported hardware, installer contents, or intended use.

Should you install GeForce 537.42 today?

For most users, no. The file is genuine when downloaded directly from an NVIDIA domain, but the version is obsolete. NVIDIA’s October 2023 security bulletin states that Windows R535 driver versions before 537.70 were affected by multiple vulnerabilities and directs users to updated releases. The issues described by NVIDIA include privilege escalation, improper access control, arbitrary-file-write, uncontrolled search-path, and denial-of-service vulnerabilities. Read the NVIDIA October 2023 security bulletin for the affected branches and fixes.

This does not mean the NVIDIA file is malware or that every installation will fail. It means 537.42 predates later security fixes and is not an appropriate general recommendation for an everyday PC connected to the internet.

537.42 is reasonable when:

  • A specific game, mod, benchmark, enterprise application, or support case requires version 537.42.
  • A newer driver demonstrably breaks a known legacy workload and testing confirms that 537.42 resolves it.
  • You are reproducing an older test environment or preserving a September 2023 software configuration.
  • A support engineer has instructed you to use this exact version.
  • The computer is a controlled, offline or isolated test machine and the legacy requirement outweighs the loss of later fixes.

Use a newer or different driver when:

  • You simply want the latest NVIDIA driver.
  • You are installing a driver for a newly released GPU.
  • You want current game support, current bug fixes, and security updates.
  • You are troubleshooting without first identifying the GPU, operating system, current driver, and affected application.
  • You have an OEM laptop with a manufacturer-validated package available.
  • You use creative software and a current Studio Driver is the better-supported option.

Even an offline legacy machine is not risk-free; isolation reduces exposure but does not make an old driver security-current. For Maxwell, Volta, and Pascal owners, NVIDIA’s current search information indicates that older architectures may receive security updates after leaving regular Game Ready support. Check the current NVIDIA results for your exact GPU rather than assuming that the newest Game Ready package is automatically correct.

537.42 versus the alternatives

Choice Potential benefit Trade-off
Install GeForce 537.42 Reproduces a known 2023 environment and may resolve a version-specific compatibility problem. Old bugs, old security status, and no later game optimizations or fixes.
Install the current Game Ready driver Current game support, newer fixes, and security updates. A particular legacy title or application could regress after the update.
Use the OEM notebook driver Better laptop-specific validation and integration with power, display switching, firmware, and hotkeys. The OEM release may lag behind NVIDIA’s generic package.
Use a Studio Driver More emphasis on stability for supported creative applications. It is not automatically the right fix for a game-specific regression.
Use the NVIDIA App Easier driver discovery and updating. It is less suitable when you must pin an exact archived version such as 537.42.

NVIDIA explains the distinction between Game Ready and Studio drivers on its driver overview page. Choose based on the workload and the documented compatibility requirement, not merely on the shared version number.

How to install GeForce 537.42

  1. Identify your hardware and Windows edition. Confirm the exact GPU model, whether the computer is a desktop or notebook, and that Windows is 64-bit.
  2. Check the compatibility tables. Compare the GPU with NVIDIA’s supported desktop or notebook list in the release-notes PDF. Laptop owners should check the manufacturer’s driver page first.
  3. Download the correct official executable. Use the desktop or notebook NVIDIA link at the top of this article. Save the file somewhere easy to find.
  4. Create a recovery point or backup. A Windows restore point or a recent system backup gives you a way back if the old driver causes a display or application problem.
  5. Reserve disk space. NVIDIA says the installer needs approximately 1.5 times the download size for extracted and temporary files. The historical NVIDIA legacy page listed the desktop package at 644.41 MB, which would imply roughly 967 MB under that guidance. Another NVIDIA details endpoint lists 675.71 MB. Because the displayed size can vary by endpoint or packaging, reserve at least 1–2 GB rather than relying on one exact figure.
  6. Run the downloaded EXE. The self-extracting package will ask for an extraction location. Accept the default or choose a location with sufficient space.
  7. Allow the NVIDIA Installer to launch. Accept the license agreement and follow the installation prompts.
  8. Restart Windows if requested. Do not judge the result until the reboot and driver initialization are complete.
  9. Confirm the installed version. Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Help → System Information and confirm that the display driver reports version 537.42. You can also verify the GPU and driver in Windows’ system information tools.

The installation sequence above follows NVIDIA’s documented process: download the executable, run it, choose or accept an extraction path, accept the license, and complete the installer.

How to downgrade to 537.42

If a newer driver is already installed, NVIDIA’s release notes specifically advise against using Windows’ Driver Rollback feature to reinstall an older NVIDIA driver. They also warn that Device Manager may leave associated files or applications behind.

  1. Download 537.42 before removing anything. Select the desktop or notebook package that matches the hardware.
  2. Temporarily disconnect from the internet. This is a practical precaution that can prevent Windows Update from immediately replacing the driver while you are downgrading.
  3. Open the installed-apps list. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, use Settings → Apps → Installed apps. You can also use Control Panel → Programs and Features.
  4. Use the NVIDIA uninstaller through Add or Remove Programs. Remove the relevant NVIDIA display-driver components. Do not rely on Windows Driver Rollback or Device Manager as the complete downgrade method.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Run the 537.42 installer. Use the desktop package for a desktop GPU or the notebook package for a supported laptop.
  7. Restart again and verify the version. Confirm that NVIDIA Control Panel reports 537.42 before reconnecting to the internet.
  8. Reconnect only after verification. If Windows immediately replaces the driver or the issue returns, use the current driver or the OEM package unless the legacy version is required for a controlled test.

NVIDIA’s guidance is to use Windows Add and Remove Programs for this process, not Windows Rollback or Device Manager as a substitute for a proper uninstall.

Troubleshooting installation failures

The installer says there is no compatible hardware

  • Confirm that you downloaded the desktop package for a desktop GPU or the notebook package for a laptop.
  • Compare the exact GPU model with NVIDIA’s 537.42 supported-product tables.
  • Check that Windows is 64-bit and that you are not running Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, or another unsupported operating system.
  • Check whether the GPU is newer than the September 2023 driver. A newly released GPU may require a later driver.
  • On a laptop, install the OEM driver first or contact the manufacturer if the generic package is rejected.

The installation fails or the display driver is damaged

First reboot and use the official Add/Remove Programs route to remove the existing NVIDIA display-driver installation, then try the correct package again. For a notebook, the manufacturer’s package is often the safest recovery path because it can restore model-specific graphics switching and power features. Third-party driver-cleaning utilities are not mandatory or risk-free and should not be treated as the first step.

If other Windows hardware drivers are also missing or outdated, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional way to scan for them, while NVIDIA or the notebook manufacturer should remain the source for this specific GPU package.

The NVIDIA Control Panel is missing

537.42 can encounter NVIDIA Control Panel installation issues through the Microsoft Store. Finish the driver installation and reboot, then troubleshoot the Store-delivered Control Panel separately. A missing Control Panel does not necessarily mean that the display driver itself failed.

The screen is scrambled over HDMI on Windows 10

If the display is an affected 8-bit HDTV, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Change Resolution, select Use NVIDIA color settings, and choose 8 bpc for output color depth. If the problem persists, test another cable or display and consider returning to a newer supported driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional file-integrity check

Downloading the executable from an NVIDIA domain is the primary way to avoid unofficial repackaging. If you want to calculate the file’s SHA-256 hash in PowerShell, run the command from the folder containing the installer:

Get-FileHash .537.42-desktop-win10-win11-64bit-international-dch-whql.exe -Algorithm SHA256

A historical Chocolatey package record lists this SHA-256 value for the desktop installer:

93c6652d78abcb8d0e54b9fc35125f8a8988efe0fec779b4e2151edfd9867ab4

That checksum is a third-party package-maintainer record, not an NVIDIA-published checksum. Treat it as a reference only and independently revalidate it before using it as an integrity guarantee. Also make sure you are hashing the desktop installer, not the different notebook executable.

Do not confuse the GeForce, Studio, and professional 537.42 packages

Several NVIDIA products can share the number 537.42 while targeting different hardware or workflows:

Is there a separate notebook download for 537.42?

Yes. NVIDIA provides a separate 537.42 notebook DCH executable. However, NVIDIA recommends checking the laptop manufacturer’s certified driver because generic notebook packages may not include the OEM’s display-switching, power-management, hotkey, firmware, or Optimus integration.

Is GeForce 537.42 safe to use in 2026?

It is an official NVIDIA file when downloaded from NVIDIA, but it is obsolete and not a good default for an internet-connected daily-use PC. NVIDIA’s October 2023 security bulletin identified Windows R535 versions before 537.70 as affected by multiple vulnerabilities. Use 537.42 only when a specific legacy requirement justifies the loss of later security fixes.

Why do NVIDIA pages show different file sizes for 537.42?

NVIDIA’s historical driver result listed the desktop package at 644.41 MB, while a newer driver-details endpoint listed 675.71 MB. Because displayed sizes can vary by endpoint or packaging, reserve at least 1–2 GB for extraction and temporary files instead of relying on one exact number.

Can I use Windows Driver Rollback to install 537.42?

NVIDIA specifically advises against using Windows Driver Rollback to reinstall an older NVIDIA driver. Download 537.42 first, remove the existing display-driver installation through Windows Add or Remove Programs, reboot, and then run the correct archived installer. Device Manager should not be treated as a complete cleanup method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the RTX/Quadro 537.42 package the same as the GeForce package?

No. The RTX/Quadro R535 U6 537.42 package targets professional workstation products and has a different installer and supported-product list. Use the GeForce desktop or notebook package only for supported consumer GeForce hardware.

The Bottom Line

GeForce 537.42 WHQL is real and still downloadable from NVIDIA, but it is an archived September 2023 driver. Install it only when a specific legacy game, application, benchmark, or controlled test environment requires that exact version. For ordinary gaming, new hardware, laptop support, and security-sensitive systems, use the current NVIDIA driver or the laptop manufacturer’s validated package instead.
