Yes—you can apply NVIDIA’s DLSS Transformer Super Resolution model without NVIDIA App. On Windows, the most practical method is to use NVIDIA Profile Inspector to edit the global NVIDIA driver profile, enable the driver’s DLSS DLL override, and select either NVIDIA’s recommended preset mapping or Preset K.
There is one important limitation: “every game” means every compatible DLSS game that honors the driver override. This method cannot add DLSS to a game that never integrated DLSS, and some games block or ignore the override.

What this method actually changes
DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render. NVIDIA’s newer Transformer models replace the older neural-network approach with a model that uses broader spatial and temporal context. The intended benefits include more stable fine detail, less ghosting, cleaner edges, and better motion reconstruction. It does not change the game’s output resolution, ray-tracing settings, or the quality mode selected in the game.

The driver-level override makes a newer, globally installed DLSS library available to compatible games and lets the driver select a model preset. It does not magically convert every DLSS implementation into a DLSS 4.5 implementation. The game must already support DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA, and its integration must accept the override.
What you need
- A Windows PC with a GeForce RTX 20-, 30-, 40-, or 50-series GPU.
- A current NVIDIA Game Ready or Studio driver. Do not install an old driver merely because early DLSS 4 documentation mentioned GeForce Game Ready Driver 572.16 as the original minimum for DLSS 4 overrides. That was a historical requirement; use the latest compatible driver instead.
- A game that already includes DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA.
- The latest stable release of NVIDIA Profile Inspector. The release page identifies v3.0.2.1 as the stable release in the supplied version record; use the newest stable release shown there rather than a pre-release unless you specifically need it.
- Administrator access. Profile Inspector needs elevated privileges to write NVIDIA driver-profile changes.
You do not need NVIDIA App for this procedure. If you want Profile Inspector to remain the only tool controlling the setting, consider uninstalling NVIDIA App first. Community reports indicate that NVIDIA App can write per-game DLSS settings or reset profiles, particularly for games it does not officially detect. Do not modify NVIDIA App files to bypass its game whitelist; that workaround is brittle and undermines the purpose of this guide.
Which preset should you use?
Do not assume that forcing Preset K everywhere is the best DLSS 4.5 configuration. NVIDIA’s recommended mapping changes the model according to the selected DLSS quality mode:
| Game mode | NVIDIA’s recommended preset | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| DLAA | Preset K | First-generation Transformer model at native output resolution. |
| Quality | Preset K | More input pixels make the conservative first-generation model a suitable default. |
| Balanced | Preset K | Uses the same recommended mapping as Quality. |
| Performance | Preset M | Second-generation Transformer model intended for more aggressive reconstruction. |
| Ultra Performance | Preset L | Second-generation Transformer model intended particularly for very low render resolutions, including 4K Ultra Performance. |
This mapping is documented in NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement and NVIDIA’s Streamline DLSS programming guide.
For a global configuration, start with Recommended. It is the least likely to make a sensible Quality-mode configuration worse simply because you forced a preset intended for a different input resolution.
Preset K is still a sensible alternative for RTX 20- and 30-series owners, or for anyone who wants the broadest and most conservative Transformer choice. NVIDIA says RTX 20- and 30-series GPUs lack native FP8 support, so second-generation Presets L and M have a larger performance cost on those generations. The model may improve image quality while reducing frame rate or increasing frame time, so test rather than assuming a free performance gain.

- Download Profile Inspector. Get the current stable archive from the official project releases page.
- Extract it to a permanent folder. Do not run it from a temporary download directory that you may later delete. Profile Inspector is portable; it does not need a conventional installer.
- Run it as administrator. Right-click
nvidiaProfileInspector.exe, choose Run as administrator, and approve the UAC prompt. - Select the global driver profile. Depending on the Profile Inspector build, the profile may be called
_GLOBAL_DRIVER_PROFILE,Profile - Global, or a similarly named global/base profile. Make sure you are not editing only a game-specific profile. - Back up the profile. Use Profile Inspector’s export function to save the customized profile as a
.nipfile before changing anything. The exact button placement can vary between releases, but the project supports exporting and restoring profiles. - Find the DLSS override setting. Use the search box and search for
DLSS - Enable DLL Override. Do not rely only on a section number because Profile Inspector layouts and definitions can change. - Enable the override. Set it to On – DLSS-SR overridden by latest installed.
- Select the adaptive model policy. Set
DLSS - Forced Model Preset Profileto Recommended. - Set the preset selector to automatic. If your build exposes both controls, set
DLSS - Forced Preset Letterto Use recommended preset. This allows the driver to use K for DLAA/Quality/Balanced, M for Performance, and L for Ultra Performance. - Apply the changes. Click Apply changes in Profile Inspector. Fully exit and relaunch the game afterward. A reboot is not normally required, but it is a useful additional step if the driver does not appear to pick up the new profile.
The relevant current setting names and values are maintained in Profile Inspector’s custom setting definitions. The labels in the graphical interface can differ slightly between releases, so search by name first.

Alternative setup: force Preset K globally
Choose this path if you have an RTX 20- or 30-series card, want to avoid the performance cost of the second-generation Transformer, or specifically want Preset K in every DLSS mode.
- In the global/base profile, enable
DLSS - Enable DLL Override. - Set
DLSS - Forced Model Preset Profileto Custom, if that control is available. - Set
DLSS - Forced Preset Letterto Preset K (Transformer Gen 1). - Click Apply changes.
- Fully restart the game.
A forced letter applies across quality modes. That is why K is simple and conservative but not necessarily optimal for Performance and Ultra Performance modes. If you later want NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5-style behavior, return the model profile to Recommended and the letter selector to Use recommended preset.

How to verify that the override is active
Do not treat a successful launch as proof that the Transformer model is active. Verify the game’s DLSS mode, the library override, and the selected preset separately.
1. Confirm the game is actually using DLSS
Open the game’s graphics menu and enable DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA. The override cannot do anything if the game is using FSR, XeSS, TSR, a proprietary scaler, or native rendering instead.
2. Use the optional no-App DLSS indicator
NVIDIA App can show DLSS information through Alt+Z → Statistics → Statistics View → DLSS, but that check requires NVIDIA App and therefore is not suitable for a strict no-App setup. For a no-App diagnostic, community guides report that this registry value can enable the DLSS indicator:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NGXCore" /v "ShowDlssIndicator" /t REG_DWORD /d 1024 /f
Run the command in an elevated Command Prompt, then launch the DLSS-enabled game. This is an unofficial troubleshooting switch, not a normal NVIDIA consumer control. Community reports commonly show a binary version such as 310.x together with the active preset letter. Do not expect the overlay to literally say DLSS 4.5.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen you are finished testing, disable the indicator with:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NGXCore" /v "ShowDlssIndicator" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Sources describing this unofficial diagnostic include this community driver guide and this third-party DLSS guide.
3. Compare the same scene
For a meaningful before-and-after test:
- Use the same resolution, DLSS quality mode, sharpening setting, and graphics settings.
- Stand in the same scene or record the same camera movement.
- Compare foliage, thin geometry, wires, hair, reflections, distant signage, and moving objects.
- Watch for ghost trails, shimmering, unstable particles, flickering details, or UI problems.
- Check frame time as well as average FPS. Transformer inference is an image-quality change, not a guaranteed performance upgrade.
Remember that a 310.x-style library version identifies the binary, not necessarily the preset. A newer DLL alone does not prove that a Transformer preset is active, and a different preset can be selected from the same broad library generation.

What games can and cannot be affected?
NVIDIA’s Profile Inspector definitions describe the DLL override as intended for DLSS 2 or newer games while warning that some titles may disallow it. In practice, the global override is best understood as a compatibility mechanism, not a universal injector.
It can potentially affect
- Games that already contain a compatible DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA integration.
- Games whose executable loads DLSS in a way that consults the NVIDIA driver override.
- Older games whose DLSS integration is new enough to honor the global mechanism.
It cannot add DLSS to
- Games that support only FSR, XeSS, TSR, or another upscaler.
- Games with no DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA integration.
- Games that validate or load the DLSS library through a nonstandard path.
- Games whose anti-cheat, DRM, or engine implementation blocks the override.
- Some older DLSS integrations that do not consult the newer global-profile mechanism.
A community implementation analysis commonly identifies DLSS DLL version 3.1.11 or newer as the point at which the global override is normally honored. This is useful troubleshooting knowledge, not a clearly documented universal NVIDIA requirement. To check an older game, locate its nvngx_dlss.dll, right-click it, choose Properties → Details, and inspect the file or product version. If the global override has no effect and the game uses a substantially older DLL, it may need a local DLL update or another compatibility workaround.
Do not assume that replacing the DLL automatically enables the Transformer model. Library replacement and preset selection are separate: the game must load the replacement library, and the driver or game must accept the selected Transformer preset.
GPU and quality-mode recommendations
| Hardware or goal | Recommended starting point | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 20/30, lowest risk | Force Preset K | Presets L and M can carry a larger performance cost on these GPUs because NVIDIA says they lack native FP8 support. |
| RTX 40/50 using DLSS 4.5 behavior | Recommended mapping | Let the driver choose K, M, or L according to the game’s DLSS mode, then test the result in each game. |
| DLAA, Quality, or Balanced | Preset K | The higher input resolution can make differences between models subtle. |
| Performance | Preset M through Recommended mapping | The newer model can improve reconstruction, but measure frame time rather than assuming higher FPS. |
| Ultra Performance at 4K | Preset L through Recommended mapping | This mode has fewer input pixels, so model quality differences are often more visible. |
| Artifacts or instability | Restore the game’s default DLSS behavior or test K | A newer model does not guarantee a better result when a game supplies poor motion vectors, depth, exposure, or history data. |
The model relies on inputs supplied by the game, including motion vectors, depth, exposure, and temporal history. If those inputs are incomplete or unusual, a newer Transformer model can still produce ghosting, flicker, or unstable detail.
Optional Ray Reconstruction and Frame Generation overrides
These settings are separate from the Transformer Super Resolution override and are not required for the main procedure.
- Ray Reconstruction:
DLSS-RR - Enable DLL Override, setting ID0x10E41E02. Enable it only when the game already uses DLSS Ray Reconstruction and you specifically want to update that model. - Frame Generation:
DLSS-FG - Enable DLL Override, setting ID0x10E41E03. Enable it only when the game already uses DLSS Frame Generation and you understand its separate GPU, driver, and game requirements.
Do not confuse the Transformer Super Resolution model with RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA makes the Transformer Super Resolution model available across GeForce RTX generations, while Multi Frame Generation has separate hardware and software requirements. DLSS 4.5 Dynamic Multi Frame Generation’s requirement for Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer does not establish a requirement for the basic Super Resolution override.
Troubleshooting
The DLSS settings do not appear
- Download the current stable Profile Inspector build and use the files included with that release.
- Do not substitute an old custom
CustomSettingNames.xmlfile that may hide or mislabel newer settings. - Run
nvidiaProfileInspector.exeas administrator. - Select the global/base profile rather than a game profile.
- Search by the setting name or hexadecimal ID.
- Apply the change and restart Profile Inspector.
The tool’s exposed options depend on the NVIDIA driver. If the setting is still absent, the installed driver may not expose that profile control yet.
The override version says Unknown or shows an old version
Profile Inspector’s definitions say the override can use the latest globally installed DLSS version, but the driver’s globally installed library can lag behind the newest public DLL or SDK. NVIDIA’s public DLSS repository lists SDK releases separately; an SDK version is not necessarily the binary currently supplied by your GeForce driver.
- Launch a DLSS-enabled game once, then exit it completely.
- Close and reopen Profile Inspector.
- Check the override version again.
- If it remains unknown, update or reinstall the NVIDIA driver.
- If the affected game is old, investigate a compatible local DLL-update method instead of assuming the global profile is broken.
The game still uses the old model
- Confirm DLSS Super Resolution or DLAA is enabled in the game.
- Fully restart the game after applying the profile.
- Confirm that the game executable is covered by the profile you edited.
- Check whether a per-game profile is overriding the global profile.
- If NVIDIA App is installed, check whether it has rewritten the game’s settings.
- Inspect the game’s
nvngx_dlss.dllversion; very old integrations may not honor the global override. - Consider that the game may explicitly block or ignore the override.
- Do not confuse the library’s binary version with its active preset.
The game crashes, flickers, or shows worse ghosting
Roll back in this order:
- Set
DLSS - Forced Preset Letterto N/A. - Set
DLSS - Forced Model Preset Profileto N/A. - Set
DLSS - Enable DLL Overrideto Off. - Click Apply changes and relaunch the game.
- If the issue remains, restore the game’s original files through Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, or the relevant launcher’s file-verification function.
- Test the game’s native DLSS implementation before trying another preset.
If only Ray Reconstruction causes the problem, disable the Ray Reconstruction override while leaving Super Resolution unchanged. On RTX 20/30, avoid L and M if their additional inference cost is unacceptable.

Multiplayer or anti-cheat concerns
The Profile Inspector method changes the NVIDIA driver profile rather than placing a modified DLL in the game directory. That is less invasive than manual file replacement, but it is not a universal anti-cheat guarantee. Anti-cheat behavior varies by game and provider.
Do not use DLL injection, modified game files, or unofficial tweaks in competitive multiplayer unless the developer and anti-cheat provider permit them. If a game reports an integrity or anti-cheat problem, disable the profile override and restore any changed local files before contacting support.
The override disappears after a driver update
Driver updates can reset or alter custom profile values. Before updating:
- Export the customized profile to a
.nipfile. - After the update, reopen Profile Inspector and select the global profile.
- Reapply the DLSS settings if they reverted.
- Check the override DLL version again.
Do not assume that a driver update preserves every undocumented profile value.

Rollback and complete removal
To return to the normal game-and-driver behavior, open the global profile in Profile Inspector and set:
DLSS - Enable DLL Override→ OffDLSS - Forced Model Preset Profile→ N/ADLSS - Forced Preset Letter→ N/A
Click Apply changes, then fully restart the game. You can also restore the exported .nip profile if you made a backup before editing.
If you used a third-party script that copied a DLL into a global NVIDIA NGX directory, remove only the files that script added and follow its documented restoration procedure. If you manually replaced a game-local nvngx_dlss.dll, restore the backup or use the launcher’s file verification. The Profile Inspector setting alone does not require replacing every game’s DLL.
Alternatives and when to use them
NVIDIA App
NVIDIA App is the simplest official consumer interface, but it does not meet the no-App requirement. In current NVIDIA documentation, the path is Graphics → Global Settings → DLSS Override, where Recommended automatically maps the DLSS 4.5 presets. Its overlay can also display the active model. See NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 driver instructions and NVIDIA App release highlights.
Manual DLL replacement
Replacing a game’s local nvngx_dlss.dll can help when an old game does not honor the global override. The general process is to back up the original file, place a compatible library beside the game executable, launch and test, and restore the original if the game fails.

The trade-off is maintenance and risk: game updates can overwrite the file, launchers can fail integrity checks, and anti-cheat systems may object. A newer DLL still does not guarantee that the game selects a Transformer preset.
DLSS Swapper
DLSS Swapper is useful for managing per-game DLSS libraries, but it is not the best match for a global, no-App setup. It changes or manages game-local files and therefore requires more per-game maintenance.
DLSSTweaks
DLSSTweaks is better suited to per-game tuning. It can force DLAA, adjust scaling ratios, alter presets, and override DLSS versions without directly overwriting the original DLSS file. Its GitHub repository is frozen at version 0.200.8.0 and points to newer releases on Nexus Mods. It is more powerful and more invasive than a global Profile Inspector setting.
Linux and Proton
Linux users need a separate Proton/DXVK-NVAPI configuration rather than the Windows Profile Inspector method. NVIDIA documents variables such as:
PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=1
DXVK_NVAPI_DRS_NGX_DLSS_SR_OVERRIDE=on
DXVK_NVAPI_DRS_NGX_DLSS_SR_OVERRIDE_RENDER_PRESET_SELECTION=render_preset_latest
These controls can update DLSS libraries and override settings in compatible Proton environments, but NVIDIA notes that some games block updates and that preset support depends on the Proton and DXVK-NVAPI versions. See NVIDIA’s Linux and Proton gaming documentation.
Bottom line
For Windows users who do not want NVIDIA App, use NVIDIA Profile Inspector’s global driver profile: enable DLSS – Enable DLL Override, choose Recommended model mapping, set the preset selector to Use recommended preset, apply the changes, and restart the game. RTX 20/30 owners who want the lower-risk option should test Preset K.
This is a driver-level override for compatible DLSS games—not a way to add DLSS to every PC game. Back up the profile, verify the result in a real DLSS scene, expect some games to ignore the setting, and disable the override if the game crashes or produces artifacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFrequently Asked Questions
Does this add DLSS to games that do not support it?
No. The driver override can replace or influence the DLSS library in a compatible DLSS game, but it cannot add DLSS to a game that only supports FSR, XeSS, TSR, or another upscaler.
Is Preset K always the best DLSS Transformer preset?
No. Preset K is a sensible conservative choice, especially on RTX 20/30. NVIDIA’s recommended DLSS 4.5 mapping uses K for DLAA, Quality, and Balanced, M for Performance, and L for Ultra Performance.
Is the Profile Inspector method safe for anti-cheat games?
It avoids modifying the game directory, but no third-party method is guaranteed to be accepted by every anti-cheat system. Do not use it in competitive multiplayer unless the game developer and anti-cheat provider permit driver-level overrides.
Why does the indicator show a 310.x version instead of DLSS 4.5?
The indicator reports the DLSS binary’s internal or product version, not NVIDIA’s marketing generation name. A 310.x-style version can still use different DLSS Transformer presets, so the number alone does not prove which model is active.
The Bottom Line
Use Profile Inspector, not a DLL-replacement loop: edit the global NVIDIA profile, enable the DLSS Super Resolution DLL override, select NVIDIA’s Recommended mapping, and restart each compatible DLSS game. Use Preset K as the conservative RTX 20/30 fallback, verify with an indicator or controlled image comparison, and keep an exported profile so you can undo the change after a driver update or artifact problem.
