HotHardware’s April 12, 2023 benchmark page places the GeForce RTX 4070 broadly around RTX 3080 performance at 1440p in several tests, while its standing changes by game and resolution. At 4K, the RTX 3080 can pull ahead; in selected titles, RTX 4070 cards beat the RTX 3090 or approach the RTX 3080. The page also records a review-era DLSS 3 Frame Generation anomaly in F1 22, so those results should be read as historical test observations rather than a current buying verdict.

What this page tested

This is page 4 of Marco Chiappetta’s HotHardware GeForce RTX 4070 review, published April 12, 2023. It focuses on in-game benchmark results and DLSS 3 tests, not current retail pricing or a present-day buying guide. Rankings below apply to the games, settings, hardware and drivers used in that review.

RTX 4070 gaming performance at 1440p and 4K

Game 1440p result reported by HotHardware 4K result reported by HotHardware How to read it
Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker RTX 4070-series cards performed about on par with RTX 3080 and ahead of RTX 3070 Ti. RTX 3080 pulled ahead. Resolution changed the ordering; the 1440p equivalence did not carry over to 4K.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla RTX 4070 cards overtook RTX 3090 in the review’s results. A notable game-specific result, not a universal ranking.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy RTX 4070 cards fell between RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 Ti. The cards occupied a middle position at both tested resolutions.
Far Cry 6 HotHardware said the result was affected by a CPU limitation. RTX 4070 cards were ahead of RTX 3070 Ti and close to RTX 3080. The 1440p result is constrained by the test platform, while 4K better exposed GPU differences.

These are comparative placements rather than guaranteed frame rates. Individual results can move with game patches, graphics settings, CPU limits and driver versions.

DLSS 3 and the F1 22 test

DLSS Quality mode

In HotHardware’s F1 22 run, enabling DLSS Quality raised the minimum frame rate above 60 frames per second. That is the review’s measured observation under its test conditions, not a promise for every preset or system.

Frame Generation behavior in that review

The reviewer reported that Frame Generation behaved properly only in Ultra Performance mode. Other tested modes returned the same results, and the reviewer said the behavior was still under investigation. Treat this as a limitation or anomaly of that 2023 test setup, not as a general statement about how DLSS Frame Generation works after later game, driver or feature updates.

How the RTX 4070 compared with competing GPUs

Tom’s Hardware’s independent review characterized RTX 4070 rasterization performance as broadly equivalent to RTX 3080 in its test suite. It also found the Radeon RX 6950 XT faster in rasterization, while RTX 4070 was faster in its demanding ray-tracing (DXR) suite. Those conclusions describe that outlet’s workload and conditions, not an immutable hierarchy across all games.

Comparison area Reported finding Qualification
Native rasterization RTX 4070 was broadly around RTX 3080; RX 6950 XT was faster in Tom’s Hardware’s suite. Applies to that review’s raster tests.
Ray tracing RTX 4070 led RX 6950 XT in Tom’s Hardware’s demanding DXR suite. Ray-tracing advantage depends on the game and settings.
Memory and power Tom’s Hardware described RTX 4070 as using less power and offering 20% more memory than RTX 3080. Both statements are that outlet’s comparison for the products tested.
Upscaling and frame generation RTX 4070 supports NVIDIA’s DLSS feature set, including DLSS 3 testing in the HotHardware page. Actual gains depend on game support, mode and implementation.

What the launch-price claim means

NVIDIA announced a $599 starting price for RTX 4070 on April 12, 2023, in its launch news release. That is historical launch pricing, not a current street-price quote. The same announcement said— as a vendor claim—that the card runs most modern games at over 100 frames per second at 1440p. NVIDIA also reported that 83% of GeForce RTX 40 Series desktop gamers enabled ray tracing and 79% enabled DLSS; the cited passage does not explain the survey methodology. Matt Wuebbling, NVIDIA’s vice president of global GeForce marketing, described RTX and DLSS adoption as a priority for most PC gamers, which is the company’s view rather than an independent measurement.

How to use these results today

  • Use the 1440p results as evidence that RTX 4070 targeted roughly RTX 3080-class performance in many 2023 workloads, not as a guarantee for current games.
  • Expect 4K comparisons to diverge: the RTX 3080 led in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, while RTX 4070 remained close to it in the 4K Far Cry 6 result.
  • Check whether a game is CPU-limited at your target resolution; HotHardware specifically identified that issue at 1440p in Far Cry 6.
  • Separate native rasterization from ray tracing and from DLSS-assisted performance before comparing an RTX 4070 with an RX 6950 XT or another card.

Bottom line from the page 4 evidence

HotHardware’s page presents RTX 4070 as a 1440p-focused Ada card that often landed near RTX 3080 performance, with game-specific wins over RTX 3090 and a 4K result close to RTX 3080 in Far Cry 6. Its results were not uniformly faster: RTX 3080 led at 4K in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker, and Guardians of the Galaxy placed RTX 4070 between RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 Ti. Tom’s Hardware adds the broader context of lower power and more memory than RTX 3080, stronger ray tracing than RX 6950 XT in its suite, but weaker rasterization than AMD’s card there. The $599 figure belongs to the April 2023 launch, and the DLSS 3 Frame Generation issue belongs to that review-era test.
