Build around Rock-type Max Attacks, especially Dynamax Gigalith with Smack Down and Max Rockfall, but do not treat one counter ranking as definitive: Dynamax Rhyperior ranks first in a separate Max-phase damage simulation. A strong group also needs defenders and a healer, not just attackers.
Gigantamax Charizard’s weaknesses
Charizard’s Fire/Flying typing makes Rock its key weakness: Rock attacks deal double damage against the combination. Water and Electric attacks are also effective, though Rock is the most direct type to prioritize for a dedicated attacker.
For a Max Battle, match the Pokémon’s Max Attack to the weakness. A Rock-type attacker using Max Rockfall is a natural choice; Water options can also contribute super-effective damage.
Best counters to consider
There is no single ranking that answers every team’s needs. Pokémon GO Hub’s Charizard-specific guide recommends Gigalith as its leading attacker, while its separate damage database ranks Rhyperior first for Max-phase damage under ideal conditions. The database’s order is not a measure of team survivability or overall battle usefulness.

#1 Best Overall
| Pokémon | Role and moves listed | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamax Gigalith | Attacker; Smack Down and Max Rockfall | The Charizard-specific guide calls it its clear best attacker. |
| Dynamax Rhyperior | Attacker; Smack Down and Max Rockfall | Ranks first in the database’s Max-phase damage simulation, which assumes ideal conditions. |
| Gigantamax Inteleon | Attacker; G-Max Hydrosnipe | A Water-type option listed by both the guide and database. |
| Dynamax Omastar | Attacker; Rock Throw and Max Rockfall | A Rock attacker included in both sources’ counter lists. |
| Gigantamax Kingler | Attacker; G-Max Foam Burst | A Water option included in the guide and database. |
| Dynamax Regirock | Defender or attacker; Lock-On to charge the meter, or Rock Throw and Max Rockfall to attack | The guide recommends it as a defender and also lists it as an attacker. |
The database measures damage during the Max Phase only. Its rankings use Level 3 Max and Gigantamax Move stats, ideal no-lag conditions, and three consecutive Max Attacks; they are not real-world success rates. The Charizard guide considers role and team composition as well as damage, so its preferred lineup can differ.
Build a team for damage and survival
Pokémon GO Hub suggests a four-player split of two attacker-focused players, one tank or defender, and one healer. This is the guide’s recommendation, not an official team requirement. Its example lineup uses Regirock as defender, Blissey as healer, and Gigalith as attacker.
Rank #2
- Attacker: Use a counter with a super-effective Max Attack. Gigalith is the Charizard guide’s featured choice; Rhyperior is the database’s top Max-phase damage option.
- Defender: Regirock can fill this role in the guide’s lineup. The guide says it resists Charizard’s likely attacks and charges the Max meter quickly.
- Healer: Blissey is the guide’s named healer. Max Spirit supports healing, while Max Guard supports the defensive role.
When charging the meter in Gigantamax and Legendary Dynamax battles, the Charizard guide recommends using Fast Attacks. Its stated reasoning is that charged moves take longer while generating the same minimum Max Energy under the boss conditions it describes.
How the Max Battle mechanics affect your plan
Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can enter Max Battles. Attacks fill the Max meter; when it is full, the Pokémon transforms for a three-turn Max phase. You can use Max Attacks during that phase, and players can dodge targeted attacks. If your Pokémon faints, you can cheer to help teammates fill their meters faster. See Pokémon GO’s official Max Battle rules for the general mechanics.

A Gigantamax Max Battle can include up to 40 Trainers, arranged in groups of four or fewer. The Pokémon Company advises preparing a large group for six-star Max Battles, noting that a large group offers the best chance of success in its July 8, 2025 guide to preparing for Gigantamax battles. Pokémon GO Hub recommends 10 to 40 players for defeating Gigantamax Charizard, but that is the guide author’s recommendation, not an official minimum. Actual difficulty depends on the team and game balance.

Gigantamax Pokémon appear in Max Battles, but the general official rules page does not confirm a Charizard event date for October 8, 2026. Check current official event announcements before planning around a specific appearance; availability is event-dependent, and a counter guide does not establish that the boss is active today.
