In the Genshin Impact community, “drip marketing” means HoYoverse’s official promotional reveals of upcoming characters—often character art, a name and a little identifying or lore information. The memes are about waiting for those reveals, joking when an expected post is missing, and playing on “drip” as slang for a stylish look. The term describes community usage, not a guaranteed posting schedule.
What “drip marketing” means in Genshin Impact
Fans use the phrase for official character-introduction material released ahead of a character’s playable arrival. One example is HoYoverse’s Wanderer introduction, which opens: “Hello, Travelers~ Today, we will be introducing a new character, the Wanderer!” (HoYoverse’s Wanderer introduction). That kind of reveal is what players commonly mean by “drip.”
The word also has a fashion-related meaning: “drip” can describe stylish clothes or an overall look. A HoYoLAB community retrospective says some fans initially understood the phrase in that clothing sense. The post also recounts an alleged official-account explanation for the term, but that history is community recollection rather than independently verified proof of where the phrase began (HoYoLAB community post, October 9, 2024).
Why drip marketing becomes a meme
Character reveals create a stretch of anticipation. Fans watch official channels and joke about waiting, refreshing, or receiving only a small piece of information instead of the full picture. In one Reddit discussion, “Where is the drip marketing??” captures the joke when an expected reveal has not appeared; another commenter explains the term as HoYoverse releasing character art and lore details for a character planned for a coming version (Reddit discussion). That thread illustrates community usage, not what every player thinks.

- Waiting and refreshing: The humor comes from treating an anticipated character post like an event worth checking for.
- “No drip” or delayed drip: If the reveal fans expected has not appeared, the absence becomes the punchline.
- Crumbs of information: A small amount of official material can prompt speculation while players wait for more. The “crumbs” description is an interpretation of the fan experience, not a claim that every update follows one marketing formula.
- Outfit wordplay: A joke can shift between “drip” as staged promotional information and “drip” as fashionable style.
- Fake or fan-made reveals: Memes, predictions, edits and leaks are not official announcements, even when they imitate the look of one.
Does “drip marketing” mean a reveal is due on a particular day?
No fixed cadence is established by the examples here. HoYoverse’s Version 5.7 announcement said Skirk would be introduced as a new playable character and gave June 18, 2025 as the update’s launch date (Version 5.7 announcement). HoYoverse’s news listing also showed Version 7.1 launch news dated September 23, 2026 (HoYoverse news listing). These are version-news examples, not a promise that character introductions will appear on a particular day or at uniform intervals. A community expectation about timing is not the same as an official schedule.

Check whether the material appears on a HoYoverse official channel before treating it as confirmation. An authentic character introduction is a publisher-posted announcement; a fan edit, prediction, prank or leak is not. Community posts are useful for understanding the jokes and language, but they do not make an unconfirmed reveal official.
