Theme My Xbox (TMX) was historically a convenient way to browse and apply community-made Xbox backgrounds, but its current availability and reliability are not established. If you can verify it is available and working in your region, you can try it; otherwise, Xbox’s documented fallback is to open a JPG or PNG in Media Player from a USB drive or DLNA-capable home media server and set it as your background.
Is Theme My Xbox still available?
There is no confirmed current Store listing or region-by-region availability in the sources available here. An older guide described TMX as a free app with community-created backgrounds, previews, favorites and an option to cycle backgrounds, but those are historical feature descriptions—not evidence that the app can still be downloaded or works today. Check the Xbox Store on your console for current availability rather than relying on the old guide’s instruction to search for it: Windows Central’s historical TMX guide.

Some users in a Microsoft Community thread reported loading or background-setting problems. A Microsoft support agent described TMX as a third-party app with limited Microsoft support. Those reports are anecdotal: they do not establish the cause of a particular failure or the app’s current status. Read the Microsoft Community discussion.
Set an Xbox One background with your own image
Xbox’s documented method uses a JPG or PNG image available either on a USB-attached drive or through a home media server that supports DLNA. You do not need a USB drive if you already have access to the image through a supported DLNA server. The menu names below come from Xbox’s 2014 instructions and may differ on current system software.

- Place the JPG or PNG on a USB drive and connect it to the Xbox One, or make the image available from a DLNA-capable home media server.
- Open the image in Media Player. Xbox’s historical walkthrough gives the path Settings > My Xbox > My background > Custom image for opening the custom-image flow.
- View the image full screen, open the Menu, and choose Set as background.
Xbox’s November 2014 announcement says the selected custom image is stored locally on that Xbox One console; it does not say the background automatically syncs to other consoles. See Xbox Wire’s November 2014 update announcement and its custom-background walkthrough.
