Its current availability is not established, so old launch instructions may not work. You can try the historic routes below, or use elgooG’s third-party restoration if you want to play now.
What was Google’s Breakout game?
Atari’s Breakout is a paddle-and-ball game: move the paddle to keep the ball in play and knock bricks away. Atari lists the original game’s release as 1978. In the Google Images Easter egg reported in 2013, image results formed the brick wall, giving the familiar game a search-themed twist. Atari’s official Breakout page describes the original game’s rules; CBS News and 9to5Google reported on the Google Images Easter egg.
How to try the original Google Easter egg
These are historical instructions, not confirmed current launch steps. Contemporary 2013 coverage described opening Google Images and searching for “Atari Breakout.” A 2020 response from a Google Search Community Product Expert instead advised searching “atari breakout” and selecting “I’m Feeling Lucky.” That community response is dated advice, not confirmation that Google still operates the feature.
- Try searching for “Atari Breakout” in Google Images.
- If that does not launch the game, try the older community-reported route: search “atari breakout” on Google and select “I’m Feeling Lucky.”
If neither route opens a game, that does not indicate a problem with your device; the available evidence does not establish whether Google currently runs the original Easter egg.

Where to play if Google’s version is unavailable
elgooG presents a restored Breakout game as an alternative. It is a third-party site, not an official Google game, so distinguish it from the original Easter egg when choosing where to play.
What to expect from Atari’s original game
Atari’s official rules describe moving a paddle with a controller, bouncing a ball into bricks, and clearing two walls. The rules specify five balls and list a maximum score of 864 points for destroying both walls; that figure applies to Atari’s described console game, not every Breakout version. Atari also describes variations including steerable balls and catch. See Atari’s rules and game details.

Google’s Easter egg versus a physical Atari game
The browser Easter egg was a Google Images feature; Atari’s console game is a separate product. If you want the original-style game on hardware, check the edition, required device or console, and current availability before buying. Atari’s game page establishes the game’s relevance, but does not confirm a particular retailer listing or its compatibility.
