Yes—Modern World of Warcraft is free to download and play through level 20. Blizzard’s Starter Edition has no stated time limit, but it is not the full game: experience stops at level 20, many social and economy features are restricted, current expansion content is unavailable, and WoW Classic requires paid game time or a subscription.
This guide reflects Blizzard’s published information checked on August 18, 2026. Interface labels, introductory content, level caps, and expansion requirements can change.

What “free World of Warcraft” means
Blizzard separates free access from full access:
- Free download: Install the Battle.net desktop app and the WoW client without buying the game.
- Free play: Play Modern WoW through level 20 without game time or a subscription.
- Full access: Add active game time or a subscription to progress beyond level 20 and access the paid game’s broader content.
- WoW Classic: Classic versions are not included in the free Starter Edition. They require active game time or a subscription.
In other words, “free WoW” is an indefinite, level-capped Starter Edition—not a free-to-play version of the entire MMO. You do not need to buy an expansion merely to test Modern WoW at the free level.

Important: If you want to play WoW Classic, do not select a Classic version expecting the free trial to apply. Choose Modern WoW instead.
How to install and play WoW for free
- Create a Battle.net account, or sign in to an existing one.
- Download and install the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac.
- Open Battle.net and select World of Warcraft.
- Use the version selector to choose Modern WoW, or the current entry labeled simply World of Warcraft.
- If several WoW accounts appear under the Battle.net login, select the one you intend to use.
- Click Install, wait for the installation to finish, and select Play.
- Create a character and choose a realm.
Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era, and other Classic versions are installed separately through Battle.net. The launcher can therefore show multiple WoW entries, each with different access requirements.
Fresh players currently begin with the introductory Exile’s Reach experience and are then directed toward Dragonflight content, although Blizzard may change this onboarding route in a future patch.

This makes the free version useful for learning combat, testing classes, exploring early quests, trying introductory dungeons, and checking whether the game runs well on your computer.

What is locked behind payment?
Starter Edition characters cannot progress beyond level 20 or access most current expansion content, including its full quests, zones, and allied characters. The following features are also restricted or unavailable:
- Guild functions and guild membership
- Trading with other players
- The Auction House
- Pet Battles
- Most chat channels
- Unrestricted whispers
- Real ID features and WoW voice chat
- Higher-level dungeons and raids
- Character transfers, faction changes, and other paid account services
- Depositing into or withdrawing from the Warband Bank
- WoW Classic progression modes
There are additional social limitations. For example, characters at least 10 levels higher than a Starter Edition character will not see that character’s /say messages. Free accounts also cannot form parties freely or communicate with every player, so do not assume that a free account can provide unrestricted co-op with paid friends.
What happens when you reach level 20?
Level 20 is a progression cap, not a countdown. Once the character reaches it:

- Experience gain stops.
- The character remains playable within Starter Edition restrictions.
- You can continue exploring available content and use permitted features.
- You can create another character to try a different class or race.
- You can upgrade the account whenever you decide to continue.
Blizzard’s current new-player guide describes paid Modern WoW progression through level 80, but maximum levels can change with later expansions and patches. Older Blizzard pages still mention level 70, so do not use those outdated figures as the current cap.

Subscription, game time, or an expansion?
Choose a subscription if you play regularly
A subscription is generally the convenient choice for someone who expects to play consistently. It is recurring, with billing intervals determined by the current Battle.net offer. Check the official U.S. subscription page for current terms and price.
Choose game time if you want a fixed commitment
Game time is better if you want paid access for a defined period without maintaining a recurring charge. Current availability and duration options vary by region, so verify them on Blizzard’s World of Warcraft purchase page.
Do not buy an expansion just to test WoW
Use the free Modern WoW access first. If you reach level 20 and want current expansion zones, features, and higher-level play, review the current Battle.net product page for the exact expansion-edition and access requirements. Blizzard’s current product family identifies World of Warcraft: Midnight as the current expansion product family and describes edition benefits such as an improved level-80 character boost and housing access, but edition contents, prices, and requirements should be confirmed for your country at purchase.

Account, realm, and region details
- You must launch the game using the Battle.net account that contains the active game time or subscription.
- One Battle.net login can contain multiple WoW accounts, such as WoW1 and WoW2. Activating the wrong one will leave the account you are using restricted.
- Region and account settings affect available realms, currencies, payment methods, and language options.
- When playing a mode in which realm choice affects grouping, select the same realm as your friends.
- Blizzard’s official installation instructions cover Windows and Mac through Battle.net; they do not describe a native console installation.
Troubleshooting free and paid access
Battle.net says you need to subscribe
- Confirm that you selected Modern WoW rather than WoW Classic.
- Confirm that you are using the intended Battle.net email address.
- Check whether you are trying to enter content beyond level 20.
- Open Battle.net account Transaction History and confirm the order or redeemed code.
- If you bought a retailer code, make sure it has been redeemed on the correct Battle.net account.
These are the common causes identified in Blizzard’s account-access troubleshooting guidance.
I paid, but Starter Edition restrictions remain
First check that the order status is Complete. Blizzard says activation can take up to 24 hours, depending on the payment method. If the order is complete and restrictions remain after that period:
- Verify that the purchase was applied to the correct WoW sub-account.
- Sign out and back in to Battle.net.
- Reset the Battle.net password to refresh the account status, as Blizzard recommends for lingering restrictions.
- Do not purchase game time again until you identify which account was activated.
The launcher shows Install instead of Play
If WoW is already installed, select Locate the game below the Install button and choose the existing installation folder. Battle.net should then recognize the files and change the button to Play.

Is the free version worth trying?
- New MMO player: Yes. It is enough to learn the controls, combat, character classes, questing, and introductory dungeons before spending money.
- Returning WoW player: Yes, if you want to test the current client or onboarding experience. Remember that old characters, content, and account entitlements can differ from the Starter Edition.
- Classic-only player: No. Classic requires paid game time or a subscription.
- Guild or social player: Only as a brief test. Guilds, unrestricted communication, trading, mail, and the Auction House are unavailable or restricted.
- Casual explorer: Yes, provided level 20 and the feature restrictions are acceptable.
- Endgame player: No. You will need paid access to progress beyond the cap and reach current high-level content.
The free version is best treated as a genuine test of Modern WoW’s feel—not as a substitute for the complete game. It lets you decide whether Azeroth is worth paying for without requiring an upfront expansion purchase.
