- Cloud gaming: A managed service launches a supported game on its servers.
- Cloud PC: You rent a remote Windows computer and manage launchers, updates, files, and software yourself.
- Remote play: Your own PC or console renders the game and streams it to another device.
- Game subscription: A catalog entitlement that may include cloud access, downloads, or neither.

Cloud-playable games can require the relevant Game Pass subscription or a separate purchase. Microsoft also says availability varies by region, plan, platform, and time. The highest listed tier includes day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, and the service’s best cloud quality and shortest wait times, according to Xbox’s official comparison.

Reasons not to choose it

3. PlayStation Plus Premium: best for PlayStation owners
PlayStation Plus Premium is the most natural cloud option for people already invested in Sony’s ecosystem. It combines selected cloud streaming with the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, monthly games, trials, online multiplayer, cloud storage, and discounts, depending on the plan.
Sony says Premium supports cloud streaming for selected PS5 titles on PS5 and PlayStation Portal, along with streaming from portions of the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. That makes it valuable for PS5 households, but it is not a general replacement for GeForce NOW or a cloud PC.

- Best integration with PS5 and PlayStation Portal.
- Provides access to selected PlayStation games without downloading them first.
- Combines streaming with the broader benefits of PlayStation Plus.
Reasons not to choose it
- Cloud availability is narrower than the overall PlayStation Plus catalog.

However, the subscription is only useful if your games are supported and the nearest service location performs well on your connection. Check storefront compatibility, data-center geography, resolution and frame-rate limits, session rules, and current pricing for your country.

Choose Boosteroid when
- You own supported Steam, Epic, Ubisoft, or other eligible PC titles.
- Its local data center or network route is demonstrably better for your home.
- You are willing to trade some software polish or consistency for a potentially lower price.
Do not choose it solely because a comparison page lists a low monthly price. Regional routing and game-by-game support matter more than the advertised starting rate.
5. Amazon Luna: best for Fire TV and casual play
Amazon Luna is a convenient option for casual players, Fire TV households, and people already using relevant Amazon memberships or channels. Browser and TV access can make it simple to play with a compatible controller.
Luna’s catalog structure, Prime benefits, channels, and included games can change. Its value therefore depends on the current relationship between Prime, Luna subscriptions, and paid channel access in your country.
Best use cases
- Living-room play through a compatible Fire TV setup.
- Family and casual games rather than maximum PC performance.
- Users who want a straightforward catalog service.
Luna should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a high-end PC streaming service. Verify current regional availability and included games before subscribing.

6. Shadow PC: best cloud PC, not conventional cloud gaming
Shadow PC rents you a remote Windows computer. That distinction matters: you generally install and manage your own launchers, games, updates, mods, and applications.
This flexibility can help when a managed streaming service does not support a particular launcher or game. It can also let you use the machine for non-gaming software.
Why choose it
- Broader software and file flexibility than a curated game-streaming service.

- Potentially better suited to unusual launchers or applications.

- You normally supply your own games and manage the Windows environment.

Connection requirements: bandwidth is only part of the answer
Cloud gaming needs enough download bandwidth for the selected stream, but stability is usually just as important. Ping, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, household congestion, VPN routing, mobile data caps, and distance from the server can all affect the experience.

- If using Wi-Fi, prefer a clean 5 GHz or 6 GHz network over a congested 2.4 GHz connection.
- Disable a VPN while testing unless you specifically need it.
- Pause large downloads and uploads on the household network.
- Test during the hours when you normally play, including peak evening periods.
- Check your provider’s current requirements rather than treating a generic bandwidth number as a guarantee.
A fast but unstable connection can feel worse than a slower connection with consistent latency. Server distance and ISP routing also mean the same service may perform very differently in two cities—or on two internet providers in the same city.

Resolution, frame rate, and latency
Maximum advertised resolution is not the same as the quality delivered to your screen. A stream may dynamically reduce resolution or bitrate when conditions worsen, and a phone cannot benefit from every high-resolution option.
Compare services by looking at:
- Maximum advertised resolution and frame rate by plan.
- HDR and codec support.
- Bitrate controls and dynamic resolution behavior.
- Compression artifacts, softness, and color banding.
- Input-to-photon latency, not just network ping.
- Whether your display can actually show the advertised output.
Cloud gaming can work well for RPGs, strategy games, slower single-player titles, and many casual multiplayer games. Fighting games, rhythm games, racing games, and competitive shooters are less forgiving. Even an excellent route cannot make remote rendering as predictable as local hardware.
Controller latency, Bluetooth interference, browser input, television image processing, and a disabled TV Game Mode can add delay independently of the cloud service.

Before purchasing, check the current rules for:
- Free-tier queues and peak-hour priority.
- Maximum session duration.
- Monthly playtime allowances and overage charges.
- Idle disconnects and reconnection grace periods.
- Annual-plan restrictions and cancellation terms.
- Whether a busy session sends you back into a queue.
These policies are among the most changeable parts of cloud gaming. A service that is inexpensive on paper may be poor value if your plan regularly queues during the hours you play.
How to test before paying for a year
- Check the exact game. Confirm the title, edition, storefront, DLC, anti-cheat, and save support.
- Confirm your country and device. Availability can differ by region, operating system, TV model, and plan.
- Use a free tier or trial when available. Treat it as a compatibility test, not proof of paid-tier performance.
- Test at peak time. Try several sessions during your normal evening or weekend hours.
- Use your intended setup. Test the actual phone, TV, handheld, controller, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet connection.
- Check recovery behavior. See what happens after a controller disconnect, brief network outage, or forced app restart.
- Confirm billing terms. Review cancellation, refunds, taxes, annual commitments, and any playtime overage rules.
When cloud gaming is the wrong choice
Choose local PC or console hardware instead if you need guaranteed low latency, regularly play serious esports, have unreliable broadband or strict data caps, need offline play, require unsupported mods or launchers, or want permanent access without catalog rotation. Cloud gaming is an access method—not a universal replacement for local hardware.
