Green dragons in the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules are chromatic dragons with lawful evil alignment, immunity to poison, and, in the young, adult, and ancient stat blocks, the ability to breathe poison. Their age changes their size, toughness, challenge rating, and the reach and damage of that breath. The 2024 Monster Manual also presents updated dragon art and lore alongside revised stat blocks; for exact current mechanics, use the 2024 rules rather than an older, explicitly legacy monster page.
What defines green dragons in D&D?
The 2024 D&D Basic Rules identify green dragons as chromatic dragons with lawful evil alignment and immunity to poison. Young, adult, and ancient green dragons also have the Amphibious trait and a Poison Breath action. Their stat blocks give them Rend attacks and spellcasting options, including Mind Spike. These are game rules, not claims about real animals.
Older D&D material is useful for understanding the familiar characterization, but it should not be mistaken for the latest account. D&D Beyond’s Adult Green Dragon page is marked legacy and warns that it does not reflect the latest rules and lore. That page calls green dragons “the most cunning and treacherous of true dragons” and associates them with misdirection and trickery. Treat that wording as legacy characterization, not as a confirmed quotation from the 2024 entry.
What changed in the 2024 Monster Manual?
The 2024 Monster Manual gives dragons updated art and lore as well as revised stat blocks. D&D Beyond says the book includes information for each stage of a dragon’s evolution; its stat-block design coverage describes a streamlined format intended to make monsters easier to run. The change is best understood as a refreshed presentation and rules treatment, not proof that every established idea about green dragons was discarded.

The official overview of dragon changes was published January 9, 2025, and the stat-block design preview followed on January 14, 2025. The 2024 Monster Manual index, published February 3, 2025, lists four green dragon entries: Green Dragon Wyrmling, Young Green Dragon, Adult Green Dragon, and Ancient Green Dragon.
How do young, adult, and ancient green dragons differ?
The table compares the current young, adult, and ancient entries in D&D Beyond’s 2024 Basic Rules. Hit points, challenge ratings, and breath damage are game statistics. The surfaced Basic Rules entries provide these details for the three stages below; the Monster Manual index confirms the wyrmling entry, but the cited Basic Rules material does not provide its full stat block.

Age makes a measurable difference in encounter scale: the ancient dragon is larger, harder to withstand, and projects poison breath farther than the young dragon. Challenge rating is a tool for encounter planning, not a guarantee that a particular dragon will be easy or difficult for every party; context and party level matter. The young entry lists Mind Spike but the cited excerpt does not specify a spell level for it.
What do green dragons breathe?
The young, adult, and ancient 2024 stat blocks list Poison Breath: a cone that deals poison damage when a target fails its save. The cone expands from 30 feet for a young dragon to 60 feet for an adult and 90 feet for an ancient one, while listed damage increases from 42 (12d6) to 56 (16d6) and 77 (22d6), respectively. The exact save and action details belong to each current stat block, so consult the relevant entry when running a specific encounter.

Where to find the complete green dragon entries
For the current young, adult, and ancient mechanics described here, consult the 2024 Basic Rules stat blocks. For the complete set of age-stage entries—including the Green Dragon Wyrmling—and the surrounding monster material, the 2024 Monster Manual is the relevant book; its official index lists all four stages. Use the legacy Adult Green Dragon page only when you specifically want the older characterization, not as the authority for current rules.
