Download the latest recommended artifact, open txAdmin, link a Cfx account, create a free server registration key in the Cfx Portal, deploy the CFX Default FiveM recipe, and start the server. This produces a basic server for local or LAN play without writing a configuration file by hand.
What you need before starting
A FiveM server consists of the FXServer software, a server-data folder containing configuration and resources, and a Cfx registration key. The official server artifacts contain the software needed to run or update a server. txAdmin is already bundled with FXServer, so you do not download or install it as a separate application.

- A Windows or Linux computer on which the server can run.
- A stable local network connection for LAN play, or a suitable deployment arrangement for public access.
- A Cfx account for txAdmin sign-in.
- A free Cfx Portal server registration key.
- Enough disk space for the artifact, server-data files, resources, logs and any later additions.
Windows is the most direct beginner route in the official walkthrough. Linux is supported, but Cfx describes its Linux build as a courtesy port because distribution compatibility and diagnostic-tool support can vary. If your goal is to learn, test scripts or play occasionally with people on the same network, local hosting is the simplest starting point.
If the server must stay online while your computer is off, or players must reach it from outside your home network, a game-server hosting provider is another official deployment option. That changes the cost and operations model: you pay a recurring fee instead of using an existing computer and connection, while the provider supplies the continuously running infrastructure. Verify a provider’s locations, player limits, backups, database support, uptime terms and control-panel features separately; those details are not properties of FiveM itself.

Choose a deployment path
| Choice | Best for | What you manage | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local computer with txAdmin | Learning, development and occasional LAN sessions | FXServer updates, files, backups and the computer’s availability | No recurring hosting charge, but the server stops when the machine or connection is unavailable |
| Local computer with manual configuration | Administrators who need direct control of server.cfg and launch commands | Folders, configuration, resources, startup commands and troubleshooting | More command-line work and more opportunities for path or argument errors |
| Managed game-server host | An always-on public server without maintaining your own machine | Your FiveM configuration and server content; the provider operates the hosting infrastructure | Recurring cost and possible control-panel or policy limits |
For a first installation, use txAdmin. It gives you a browser-based setup flow, validates the recipe configuration and makes routine server operations visible. Manual setup is useful when you deliberately want to control the server-data directory and launch process.
Install FXServer and open txAdmin
1. Download the recommended artifact
- Open the official Cfx server download page.
- Select the latest recommended server artifact for your operating system. An artifact is the package containing the files required to run or update a FiveM server.
- Extract the archive into a dedicated folder rather than mixing it with unrelated files. Keeping the artifact separate makes updates and troubleshooting easier.
2. Start the server executable
On Windows, run FXServer.exe from the extracted artifact folder. On Linux, use the supplied run.sh script. The first launch starts the FXServer process and the bundled txAdmin service.

3. Open the txAdmin setup page
txAdmin normally opens automatically. If it does not, open http://localhost:40120 in a browser on the same computer. The FXServer console prints a PIN; enter that PIN in the browser to pair the running server with txAdmin.

4. Register txAdmin
- Link your Cfx account when prompted.
- Create a backup password. Store it somewhere safe; it is separate from your normal game password and is needed for account recovery within the panel.
- Review and accept the Creator Platform License Agreement and the txAdmin License.
- Complete registration to reach the deployment screen.
txAdmin is described by Cfx as a full-featured web panel for managing and monitoring a FiveM server. Its documented controls include recipe deployment, server and resource start/stop/restart actions, configuration editing and validation, whitelist and permission systems, player moderation and an in-game administrator menu.
Deploy the basic server with the txAdmin recipe
1. Select the official recipe
- In txAdmin, choose Popular Recipes.
- Select FiveM Basic Server (CFX Default).
- Leave the data location as configured unless you have a specific reason to place server-data elsewhere. A custom location is useful only when you understand the storage and backup implications.
- Open the Recipe Deployer.
A recipe is a repeatable deployment definition. For a first server, the CFX Default recipe is the shortest path to a working baseline because it creates the expected folders, configuration and core resources for you.
2. Create the required server key
Open the Cfx Portal and generate a server registration key. The key is free, but it is required to register the server. Copy it exactly and paste it into the key field in txAdmin. Do not publish the key in screenshots, chat messages or public configuration repositories.
3. Run the recipe and start the server
- Submit the registration key in the Recipe Deployer.
- Run the recipe and wait for deployment to finish.
- Choose Save and Run Server.
- Watch the txAdmin console for startup errors before trying to connect.
When the recipe completes successfully, you have a basic FiveM server. You can then add resources, adjust permissions and refine the configuration from txAdmin instead of rebuilding the installation manually.

Connect from the FiveM client on a LAN
The official getting-started flow demonstrates connecting from the FiveM client to the computer hosting the server over a local network. Start the server first, then launch FiveM on the client computer and connect to the host computer’s LAN address as shown by the client and server setup. If the server does not appear or a connection attempt fails, restart the FiveM client after the server has finished starting; the official walkthrough specifically notes that a client restart may be needed.
LAN testing is the right first check because it isolates the FiveM installation and server configuration from the additional networking work required for public access. Once the basic server works locally, document the working artifact version, data location, registration key location and resource set before making larger changes.
Manual setup with server.cfg
The manual route separates the server artifact from a server-data directory. You create or use a server.cfg file in that data directory, put the registration key and baseline resources in the file, then launch FXServer with an explicit +exec server.cfg argument.

sv_licenseKey "licenseKeyGoesHere"
Replace the example value with the server registration key generated in the Cfx Portal. The configuration also needs the baseline resources specified by the guide. Preserve the resource order and syntax when copying the default configuration, then make one change at a time so an error can be traced.
Launch commands
On Windows, run FXServer from the appropriate server-data context with:
FXServer.exe +exec server.cfg
On Linux, use:
run.sh +exec server.cfg
The exact working directory matters. The command must be able to find the server-data files and the resources referenced by server.cfg. A correct-looking file in the wrong folder behaves like a missing configuration.
Common startup failures and fixes
The resources list is missing
If the console does not show the expected resources, the command was commonly run from the wrong folder. Check that you launched from the server-data location expected by the manual guide and that the resource directories are present there. Avoid moving individual resource folders until the original layout works.

No resources load and clients cannot connect
Confirm that the launch command includes +exec server.cfg. Omitting the argument starts FXServer without loading the intended configuration, so the endpoint and resource definitions may never be applied. Stop the process, rerun the command with the argument, and read the console from the beginning of startup.
“No license key was specified” appears
This message points to either a missing key or one of the setup mistakes above. Check that sv_licenseKey is present in the active server.cfg, that the value is the key generated in the Cfx Portal, and that +exec server.cfg selected that file. A key placed in a different server-data folder does not help if the running process is reading another configuration.
txAdmin does not open
Look at the FXServer console for the printed PIN and startup status. If the browser did not open automatically, enter http://localhost:40120 yourself. Make sure the browser is on the same computer as the running FXServer process and that the process has not exited because of an earlier configuration error.

Once the basic server is running, txAdmin becomes the day-to-day control surface. You can start, stop and restart the whole server or individual resources, edit and validate configuration, assign permissions, maintain a whitelist, moderate players and use the in-game admin menu. Recipe-based deployment also gives you a repeatable way to rebuild a baseline installation when you are testing changes.
Keep a backup of the server-data directory and your configuration before installing unfamiliar resources. The txAdmin backup password protects access to the panel, while the Cfx registration key identifies the server; treat both as credentials and do not commit them to a public repository.
Local hosting or a managed provider?
Use local hosting when
- You are learning FiveM server administration.
- Players are on the same LAN or you are testing privately.
- You already have a computer and connection that can remain available during play.
- You want unrestricted filesystem and configuration access.
Consider a hosting provider when
- The server must remain online when your personal computer is off.
- Players outside your local network need a dependable public destination.
- You do not want to maintain the host machine, operating system and network connection.
- A provider’s control panel, backups or location options solve an operational requirement you cannot easily handle locally.
Hosting is not a substitute for understanding the server-data layout. You still need to know where server.cfg, resources and credentials live, and which controls the provider exposes. Confirm the provider-specific price, region, player capacity, backup policy and database support before committing.
A practical first-session checklist
- Download the latest recommended artifact for Windows or Linux.
- Extract it into a dedicated folder.
- Start
FXServer.exeorrun.sh. - Open txAdmin, using
http://localhost:40120if necessary. - Enter the console PIN, link your Cfx account and create a backup password.
- Accept the platform and txAdmin licenses.
- Choose FiveM Basic Server (CFX Default) under Popular Recipes.
- Generate and paste a free Cfx Portal registration key.
- Run the recipe, then select Save and Run Server.
- Connect from FiveM over the LAN and restart the client if it does not discover the running server.
- If using manual setup instead, verify
server.cfg,sv_licenseKey, the0.0.0.0:30120endpoints and the+exec server.cfglaunch argument.
This sequence gives you a known-good baseline. After it works, add custom resources or move to an always-on host one change at a time, keeping the original configuration available for recovery.
