Beaver Builder is a drag-and-drop WordPress plugin for designing the content area of pages without hand-coding layouts. Install the plugin from your WordPress dashboard, open it from a page, and assemble the page with modules placed inside columns. Your active WordPress theme still supplies the site-wide header, footer, sidebar, and other theme-controlled areas.

For a simple page or to learn the interface, the free Lite edition is enough to begin. Choose a premium license when you need the wider module library, global styling, reusable layouts, templates, or Beaver Themer. The setup below follows the current system requirements and dashboard labels documented for 2026.

What Beaver Builder changes—and what it does not

Beaver Builder works inside the page content area. Instead of arranging blocks only through the standard WordPress editor, you open its visual builder and drag modules into columns. You can then edit text, images, buttons, spacing, colors, and other settings from the builder interface.

The plugin does not replace the WordPress theme. WordPress requires an active theme, and that theme continues to control the header, footer, sidebar, post metadata, and other areas outside the page content layout. This boundary matters when a page appears correct in the middle but still has a header or footer you want to change.

For layouts that go beyond an individual page—such as custom site-wide headers, footers, index pages, archives, or search-result templates—the relevant add-on is Beaver Themer. The normal page builder is not intended to directly lay out those theme parts.

Check the requirements before installing

Confirm these conditions before uploading the plugin. They are vendor requirements, not independent performance benchmarks.

  • WordPress version: Beaver Builder’s current system-requirements documentation lists WordPress 6.8 or higher.
  • REST API: The REST API must be enabled. A quick check is to visit your site’s /wp-json/ endpoint while logged out or in another browser session. A working response indicates that the endpoint is reachable.
  • WordPress memory: At least 128 MB is recommended; 256 MB or more is preferred for additional headroom.
  • Server framing and CSP: Your hosting configuration must permit the framing and content-security-policy behavior required by the editor. Restrictive headers can prevent the visual interface from loading even when the plugin is installed.

If any of these checks fails, fix it first. Upgrading WordPress, enabling the REST API, or asking your host to adjust memory and framing policies is more reliable than repeatedly reinstalling the same ZIP file.

Install Beaver Builder from the WordPress dashboard

Premium and Lite installations use the WordPress plugin uploader. Keep the downloaded file in ZIP format; do not unpack it before uploading.

  1. Get the files: Sign in to your Beaver Builder My Account page and download the Beaver Builder plugin ZIP. If you purchased a premium edition, copy the license key as well.
  2. Open the uploader: In WordPress administration, go to Plugins > Add New, then choose Upload plugin.
  3. Select the ZIP: Use the file picker to select the Beaver Builder ZIP and click Install Now. Wait for WordPress to finish unpacking and registering the plugin.
  4. Activate it: Select Activate Plugin on the completion screen, or return to Plugins and activate Beaver Builder from the list.
  5. Register a premium license: For a premium edition, go to Settings > Beaver Builder > License and enter the license key. Save the setting so the site can receive the benefits attached to the active license.

Do not upload a theme ZIP in the plugin uploader. The plugin and the optional Beaver Builder Theme are installed from different dashboard areas.

Lite or Premium: which edition fits your project?

Lite is a practical way to learn the interface or build a straightforward page with its included subset of modules. Premium is the better fit when a site depends on a broader design system, reusable components, or theme-part layouts.

Updates, downloads, and support Use the Lite offering under its free terms An expired license loses downloads, updates, and support

The exact premium plan amount, site-activation allowance, and multisite limits depend on the current license plan. Check those details before buying rather than assuming every premium license has the same limits. The key distinction is capability: choose Lite for learning and simple pages; choose Premium for reusable design assets, global control, the expanded module set, or Themer-based layouts.

Do you need the Beaver Builder Theme?

No. The Beaver Builder Theme is optional when you use the Beaver Builder Plugin. You can keep your existing compatible WordPress theme and use Beaver Builder for page content.

The vendor describes its own theme as a framework theme with clean code and many WordPress Customizer options. If you select it, the child theme is optional but strongly encouraged. A child theme gives you a safer place for customizations because changes made there are less likely to be overwritten when the parent theme is updated.

Install the optional theme

  1. Obtain the parent-theme ZIP and child-theme ZIP from your Beaver Builder account.
  2. In WordPress, open Appearance > Themes and choose Add New, then Upload Theme.
  3. Upload and install the parent ZIP, followed by the child-theme ZIP.
  4. Activate the child theme, not the parent, when both are installed.

Changing themes can alter menus, widgets, typography, and other site-wide settings. Treat it as a separate design decision from installing the plugin. If your current theme already supplies the header, footer, and sidebar behavior you want, there is no requirement to replace it.

Open Beaver Builder for your first page

After activation, create a new page or edit an existing one. The builder can be launched from three places:

  • From the block editor, choose Launch Beaver Builder.
  • From the classic editor, choose the same Launch Beaver Builder action.
  • From Pages > All Pages, use the Beaver Builder launch action for the page you want to edit.

The editor opens for that page’s content area. If you expected to edit the site header or footer, you are looking for a theme-level tool rather than the normal page builder; Beaver Themer is the add-on intended for those layouts.

Build a first page with modules and columns

Modules are the practical building blocks. They are placed into columns, and the available modules are organized as content, container, or block types. A module generally inherits the active theme’s styling until you explicitly override a setting in the module or row.

  1. Open the Content Panel: Click the plus button in the builder interface. This panel is where you select modules and layout elements.
  2. Start with a row and column: Add a column structure appropriate to the content. A single column is a sensible starting point for a heading and introductory text; additional columns can hold grouped content.
  3. Add a module: Drag a suitable module into a column. Heading, Text, Photo, and Button modules cover the basic elements of a simple landing page.
  4. Enter the content: Replace the sample text, upload or select the intended image in a Photo module, and set the destination URL for a Button module.
  5. Adjust presentation: Use the module and row settings for typography, colors, alignment, spacing, and backgrounds. Change only what the design needs so the page remains consistent with the theme.
  6. Duplicate deliberately: If the same structure will recur on the page, duplicate a row or module and replace its content. Premium users can turn frequently reused rows, columns, modules, or layouts into reusable assets.
  7. Save while working: Save the layout before leaving the builder. Keep the page in draft until its links, spacing, and responsive behavior have been checked.

How inheritance affects your design

Theme inheritance is useful for keeping headings, body text, and buttons consistent across a site. It can also explain why a module looks different from a tutorial made with another theme. When a specific module needs a different color, font treatment, or spacing, override that property in the module settings rather than assuming the builder has changed the site’s global theme rules.

Use containers and blocks purposefully

Content modules hold items such as text, images, and buttons. Container structures establish rows and columns, while block-type elements can group or organize content. Keeping structure separate from content makes later edits easier: you can change a column arrangement without rewriting every module inside it.

Check the page before publishing

A page that looks correct in the editor is not finished until it has been checked at the sizes your visitors use. Complete these checks while the page is still in draft:

  • Responsive layout: Inspect narrow and wide viewport sizes. Look for columns that become too cramped, headings that wrap awkwardly, images that overflow, and buttons that are difficult to tap.
  • Spacing: Check the top and bottom spacing of rows and modules. Large inherited margins can create unexplained gaps when several modules are stacked.
  • Links: Activate every button and important text link. Confirm the destination and whether the link should open in the same window or a new one.
  • Images: Confirm that the intended image is selected and that it remains legible at smaller widths.
  • Theme context: Review the page with the real header, footer, sidebar, and post metadata areas visible. Those areas come from the active theme, not the page-builder canvas.
  • Draft versus publish: Save the page and preview it at the intended viewport sizes before selecting Publish.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The ZIP will not install

Confirm that you selected the plugin ZIP downloaded from your Beaver Builder account and that it remains compressed. If you accidentally selected an extracted folder or a theme ZIP, return to Plugins > Add New > Upload plugin and choose the correct plugin archive.

The builder does not open

First verify that Beaver Builder is activated and that you are editing a page, not looking for a theme-part editor. Then check the site’s REST endpoint at /wp-json/. A disabled or inaccessible REST API can prevent editor functions from working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The editor loads partially or is blocked

Review the server’s framing and content-security-policy settings. Security headers that disallow the required frame behavior can block the visual editor. Ask the hosting administrator to compare those policies with Beaver Builder’s current system requirements instead of disabling security controls indiscriminately.

The page becomes unstable or runs out of memory

Check the WordPress memory allocation. The documented minimum recommendation is 128 MB, with 256 MB or more preferred. If the allocation is lower, ask your host or site administrator to raise it and verify the resulting value before adding more modules.

A premium feature is unavailable

Confirm that the premium license key was entered at Settings > Beaver Builder > License. Also check the license status: an expired license loses downloads, updates, and support. The page you already built may remain, but access to those license services does not continue after expiry.

A maintenance routine that prevents avoidable surprises

Keep a copy of the original plugin and theme ZIP files in a secure location, record which edition and license are active, and document whether the site uses the optional Beaver Builder Theme or another theme. Before a major WordPress or theme change, preview important pages and confirm that the REST API and editor still load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For teams, establish a small design vocabulary: decide which heading levels, button treatments, spacing patterns, and image proportions are standard. Premium global styles and reusable assets can enforce that vocabulary; Lite users can still apply the same discipline manually. Do not convert every row into a reusable asset unless it truly recurs, because overly broad reuse can make a one-off page harder to customize.

A concise first-page checklist

  1. Run WordPress 6.8 or newer.
  2. Confirm the REST API responds at /wp-json/.
  3. Verify at least 128 MB of WordPress memory, preferably 256 MB or more.
  4. Confirm server framing and CSP settings allow the editor to load.
  5. Download the plugin ZIP from your Beaver Builder account.
  6. Install it through Plugins > Add New > Upload plugin, then activate it.
  7. Enter a premium key at Settings > Beaver Builder > License when applicable.
  8. Create or edit a page and select Launch Beaver Builder.
  9. Use the plus button to open the Content Panel, then drag modules into columns.
  10. Check responsive views, links, spacing, and the complete theme frame before publishing.
