To create a Minecraft world, open the game, choose Play in Bedrock Edition or Singleplayer in Java Edition, select Create New World, set the world options, and confirm with Create or Create New World. The labels and available settings differ by edition and game version, so follow the path that matches your menu.

Before you create the world

Minecraft has two main editions with different world-creation screens. Bedrock Edition starts from the Play screen and includes the Worlds tab, a Seed Picker, and an in-game add-on workflow. Java Edition starts from Singleplayer and presents its own world-creation screen with Java-specific advanced options. If a button is missing, first confirm which edition you launched and remember that menu labels can change between game versions.

  • Bedrock Edition: use Play → Worlds → Create New World.
  • Java Edition: use Singleplayer → Create New World.
  • World type: decide whether you want normal Survival progression, unrestricted Creative building, or a multiplayer world that friends can access.
  • Seed: leave it blank for a new random map, or enter a known value when you need repeatable terrain.

How to create a world in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

1. Open the world-creation screen

  1. Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
  2. Select Play on the main menu.
  3. Open the Worlds tab.
  4. Select Create New World.
  5. If the game opens a Create from… screen, select Create New World once more.

You should now see the Bedrock setup page with game, world, multiplayer, and optional content controls. Work through the page before selecting Create; most choices are saved as part of this world and are not intended to be changed casually later.

2. Name the world

Enter a name that identifies the map’s purpose. A descriptive name such as Co-op Survival, Redstone Test Lab, or Mountain Base Seed is easier to recognize than the default name when you have several saves. The name affects how the world appears in your list; it does not determine the terrain or game rules.

  • DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
  • CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
  • EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
  • SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

3. Choose the default game mode

Mode What it is for Choose it when
Survival Explore, collect resources, craft equipment, fight dangers, and gain experience through normal progression. You want resource management, exploration, risk, and a long-term save.
Creative Build and experiment without Survival’s normal resource and danger loop. You are designing structures, testing mechanisms, or prototyping an idea.

Pick the mode that matches the world’s purpose. A building test world is usually faster in Creative, while a shared adventure map is generally more satisfying when everyone starts in Survival. Your default choice establishes how the world begins; any additional mode controls shown by your edition should be reviewed before creation.

4. Set the difficulty

Difficulty controls the challenge level for the world. Choose the setting that suits the players who will use it, especially if children or new players are joining. Bedrock also allows difficulty to be controlled with commands when cheats are enabled. If you want a conventional progression without command-based changes, select the intended difficulty before creating the map.

5. Enter a seed or use the Seed Picker

A seed is the value used to generate the world’s terrain. Leave the field empty when you want Minecraft to select a random map. Enter a known seed when you need the same terrain again—for example, when friends are starting from an agreed location or when you are following a build plan based on a particular landscape.

In Bedrock, the official Seed Picker is located at Minecraft → Create New → Create New World → Game. Open the picker if you want a listed terrain concept rather than typing a number manually. The exact picker entries can vary with the client version.

Recreating a world with the same Bedrock seed reproduces the generated map, not the old save. It does not restore previous inventories, buildings, chests, player locations, or other progress. Treat a seed as a terrain recipe, not a backup.

  • PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).

6. Configure multiplayer permissions

Use the multiplayer controls on the creation screen to decide who can join and what permissions visitors receive. Review these settings before you create the world if friends will be playing. A locally stored world is normally tied to the host’s availability; players should not assume it will remain accessible when the host is offline.

If you need a persistent hosted world, Minecraft Realms is the official hosted-world route. The Realms setup begins from PLAY, then CREATE NEW WORLD, followed by the game and multiplayer settings. Availability and account requirements can vary by platform, so use the options presented in your own client.

7. Decide whether to enable cheats

Cheats unlock command-based controls and can be useful for testing, administration, or recovering a stuck build. They also change the achievement status of the Bedrock world. Microsoft’s official guidance states: Be aware that enabling cheats will disable achievements for that world.

Enable cheats only if that trade-off is acceptable. If achievements matter, create a separate test world for commands and keep your achievement-focused Survival world unchanged. Set the choice before confirming creation, because the consequences apply to that world.

8. Add resource packs or behavior packs

Bedrock supports add-ons that can add custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes, and other game content to new or existing worlds. To activate one while creating a world:

Minecraft - Bedrock Edition PS4
  • Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
  • discover community creations in the new in-game store
  • access new mini games and game modes through servers
  1. Open Resource packs or Behavior packs in the world settings.
  2. Select an available pack.
  3. Select Activate.
  4. Review the active-pack list and any warnings or dependency notices shown by the game.
  5. Select Create when the configuration is ready.

Resource packs generally change the way content is presented, while behavior packs can alter how game content functions. Follow the pack’s own compatibility notes and avoid stacking packs that modify the same systems unless you understand their load order and dependencies.

9. Create the world

Check the name, mode, difficulty, seed, multiplayer permissions, cheats, and active packs one last time. Select Create. Minecraft will generate the terrain and place you in the new world. Generation time depends on the device and the amount of content being loaded; do not close the game while the creation process is still running.

How to create a world in Minecraft Java Edition

1. Open Singleplayer

  1. Launch Minecraft: Java Edition.
  2. Select Singleplayer from the main menu.
  3. Select Create New World.

Java’s world-creation screen contains the settings available in your current Java version. The game records the world’s game mode and seed in its world data, so decide those values before starting the map.

2. Set the Java world options

Enter a world name, select the game mode, choose the difficulty, and enter a seed if you want repeatable terrain. Java versions can expose additional advanced options, so read each visible control rather than assuming that another edition has the same defaults. If an option is not present in your version, it cannot be configured from that screen.

For a random landscape, leave the seed field blank. For a repeatable landscape, enter the exact seed value and preserve it in your notes. A matching seed recreates terrain generation; it does not copy a previous save’s buildings, items, or player progress.

  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

3. Confirm creation

Select Create New World. Java Edition generates the map and loads you into it. If the resulting terrain is not what you wanted, create another world with a different seed or revised settings rather than deleting a world you may want to keep.

Which settings should you choose?

Decision Option A Option B Best fit
Edition Java Bedrock Java suits the Java-specific PC ecosystem; Bedrock supports the cross-platform Marketplace and add-on workflow documented by Mojang.
Play style Survival Creative Survival is for progression and danger; Creative is for unrestricted building and testing.
Terrain Random seed Known seed Random supports discovery; a known seed gives repeatable terrain for a plan or shared starting point.
Customization Vanilla Bedrock packs Vanilla keeps the baseline experience simple; activated resource or behavior packs add custom content.
Access Local world Realm A local world suits solo or host-led sessions; a Realm is intended for a persistent hosted multiplayer world.

Practical setup recipes

First Survival world

  • Choose Survival.
  • Use the default or a moderate difficulty that the players can handle.
  • Leave the seed blank for an unknown landscape.
  • Keep cheats disabled if you want the world to retain Bedrock achievements.
  • Leave add-ons off until you are comfortable with the unmodified game.

This configuration gives you the standard loop of exploration, resource collection, crafting, combat, and experience without introducing extra systems at the start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creative building laboratory

  • Choose Creative.
  • Use a known seed if the build depends on a particular biome or terrain shape.
  • Enable cheats only when command access is useful and achievements are not a priority.
  • Use packs or add-ons that support the blocks or behaviors you are testing.
  • Keep this separate from an achievement-focused Survival save.

Friends starting together

  • Agree on the edition and version before anyone joins.
  • Choose a seed together or leave it random for discovery.
  • Set multiplayer permissions during world creation.
  • Decide whether the host’s local availability is sufficient.
  • Use the Realms creation path when the group needs a persistent hosted world.

Seeds: what they do and what they do not do

Seeds determine the input used for procedural terrain generation. Entering the same seed in the same edition and compatible game-generation context is the way to reproduce a landscape. Keep the value exactly as shown, including any negative sign or other characters accepted by the field.

A seed does not preserve a world state. If you recreate a map from a seed, you start with newly generated terrain and none of the previous save’s player data, structures, storage, or progression. To preserve an existing world, keep the original save rather than attempting to rebuild it from the seed.

Cheats, achievements, and separate test worlds

Commands can make a test environment faster to manage, but Bedrock’s achievement warning is permanent for the affected world: enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. The safest organization is to maintain two saves when you need both goals:

  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
  1. Create an ordinary Survival world with cheats disabled for achievement progress.
  2. Create a separate Creative or test world where commands and experiments are allowed.
  3. Use a clear naming convention so the saves cannot be confused.

Difficulty commands are available on Bedrock when cheats are enabled. Use them only in the test or administration world if you want your main progression save to retain its original conditions.

Add-ons and packs: avoiding common setup problems

If a Bedrock pack does not appear in the world, return to the creation screen and confirm that it is listed under the correct category. A resource pack and a behavior pack are activated from different entries, and some custom content requires both. Select Activate rather than merely highlighting the pack, then check the active list before selecting Create.

  • Pack is unavailable: verify that it is installed for Bedrock and compatible with your game version.
  • Content looks wrong: check whether another resource pack is overriding the same textures or UI elements.
  • Behavior does not work: confirm that the required behavior pack is active and that any dependency is present.
  • World will not load: disable the newest pack, create a test copy, and add packs back one at a time.

Troubleshooting world creation

Create New World is missing

Use the edition-specific entry point. Bedrock requires Play, then Worlds; Java requires Singleplayer. On Bedrock, a second Create New World selection may be required after the Create from… page appears.

The seed produced a different landscape

Check that you entered the seed exactly and that you are using the same edition and a compatible game version. A seed reproduces terrain generation, not the previous save, and differences between editions should not be treated as an error in the seed itself.

Friends cannot join

Reopen the world’s multiplayer settings and confirm that the intended permissions were selected. Also verify that every player is using the edition and version supported by that world. A locally stored world may require the host to be playing, whereas a persistent hosted world follows the Realm’s availability and account rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Achievements are unavailable

On Bedrock, check whether cheats were enabled for that world. Microsoft’s warning is explicit: enabling cheats disables achievements for the world. Use a separate save for command testing rather than trying to convert an achievement-focused world into a command-enabled one.

The wrong mode or difficulty was selected

Do not delete the world immediately if it contains anything you want to keep. First decide whether the current save can serve its purpose. For a clean start with different initial settings, create another world and give it a distinct name so the two saves remain identifiable.

Final pre-creation checklist

  • You selected the correct edition-specific path.
  • The world name identifies the map’s purpose.
  • Survival or Creative matches how you intend to play.
  • The difficulty is appropriate for everyone using the save.
  • The seed is blank for random terrain or entered exactly for a repeatable map.
  • You understand that a seed cannot restore old progress.
  • Bedrock cheats are disabled if achievements matter.
  • Required resource and behavior packs are activated.
  • Multiplayer permissions match the people who should join.
  • You know whether a local save or persistent hosted world is appropriate.

When those choices are correct, select Create in Bedrock or Create New World in Java. Minecraft will generate the map using the settings you selected.
