Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, note:
- Which game or program fails: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry are known examples that can contain
gfsdk_multires.win32.dll. - When the error appears: during launch, after an update, after antivirus activity, or after moving the game.
- The exact wording: “not found,” “missing,” “specified module could not be found,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- The file location: the DLL should normally be beside the game’s executable, not in a Windows system folder.
- The application architecture:
win32identifies a 32-bit library. It can be required by a 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows.

gfsdk_multires.win32.dll is an application-local NVIDIA GameWorks rendering library, not a Windows component. The safest fix is to restore it from the game’s official launcher by verifying the installation, then reinstalling the game if verification cannot recover the original file.
What gfsdk_multires.win32.dll does
The filename is associated with NVIDIA Multi-Res Shading, a GameWorks technology intended for graphics rendering, including virtual-reality workloads. Public game records identify the exact file in Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry, and file inventories also list it with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Other games may contain licensed GameWorks components, so the program that installed the file is the authoritative source for its replacement.

This is not a normal Windows DLL. It is not expected to be supplied by Windows Update, DirectX, or a graphics-driver installer. It also does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Verify the game files
This is the quickest and most likely repair for a deleted, incomplete, or damaged installation.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.

A successful verification normally reports that files were repaired or reacquired, or that no problems were found. Launch the game from Steam rather than opening an old desktop shortcut.
Other launchers
Use the launcher’s equivalent repair command. It may be called Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate files. Start the launcher normally, allow pending updates to finish, and reboot Windows if the launcher requests it.
If verification says the installation is complete but the DLL is still absent, do not download a replacement from a DLL website. Continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the game from its legitimate source
A reinstall is the definitive fix when the launcher cannot restore the file or the installation was interrupted.
- Back up compatible save files if the game stores them outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the game from its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again from Steam, the publisher’s official launcher, or your original legitimate installation media.
- Allow all updates to complete.
- Verify the files once more.
- Launch the game without manually copying DLLs into the folder.
If a fresh installation repeatedly loses gfsdk_multires.win32.dll, investigate antivirus quarantine, unofficial repacks, damaged storage, or a failed update. Repeatedly replacing the file manually does not address those causes.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old game file after an update or executable change.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an entry that identifies the game directory or DLL.
- Restore the file only if the game came from a trusted, legitimate source and the detection is clearly a false positive.
- Return to the launcher and verify the game files again.
Do not whitelist an unverified DLL merely because its filename matches. Microsoft notes that a restored item may be detected again. Its guidance for reviewing quarantined items is available in Protection history.

If the file is quarantined immediately after every verification, stop restoring it repeatedly. Scan the complete installation, remove unofficial modifications, and reinstall from the legitimate launcher.
Fix 4: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that gfsdk_multires.win32.dll itself is absent. Windows may be finding the target DLL but failing to load a dependency required by it.

A reported dependency for this 32-bit binary is MSVCR100.dll, associated with the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 runtime. Treat this as a diagnostic lead rather than a publisher-provided dependency specification.
If the error names MSVCR100.dll:
- Download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 redistributable from the Microsoft Download Center.
- Choose the x86 package for the 32-bit game.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if the runtime is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again and test the launch.
A 64-bit launcher or separate 64-bit component may also require the x64 runtime. Installing x64 alone does not satisfy a 32-bit application. Microsoft’s current runtime architecture guidance is in its Visual C++ redistributable documentation.
Keep other Visual C++ redistributables installed when applications require them. They can coexist, and removing unrelated versions can create new launch errors.
Fix 5: Check the game folder and architecture
Open the game’s installation directory and look for gfsdk_multires.win32.dll beside the relevant executable.

Do not replace the file with a similarly named 64-bit build. Do not copy it from another game, another release, or another computer. A mismatched DLL can produce:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
- An immediate crash without a useful message

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only if Windows is also failing
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They will not normally recreate a game-local NVIDIA DLL, so use them only when other Windows programs also show corruption or system-file errors.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- When it finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify or reinstall the game again.

Running these commands repeatedly without recording what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Fix 7: Update drivers only for broader graphics problems
There is no reliable evidence that a graphics-driver update directly installs this exact DLL. Do not treat a driver update as a replacement for game verification.
Consider a driver update when the game also has rendering crashes, black screens, device errors, or problems in multiple 3D applications.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For the most reliable package, use the graphics manufacturer’s official support channel. If you manually update, identify the exact adapter model and Windows architecture before installing.

The Windows Features dialog and Device Manager are not normal solutions for this error. Do not enable random legacy features or remove display adapters simply because the filename contains win32.
Why System32, SysWOW64, and regsvr32 are wrong
Do not copy gfsdk_multires.win32.dll into either Windows system folder.
System32is primarily the location for 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.SysWOW64contains many 32-bit Windows components, but it is not a general-purpose folder for third-party game DLLs.- A game may require a particular build beside its own executable.
regsvr32 is also not the normal remedy. It registers COM or ActiveX-style DLLs that export DllRegisterServer. A rendering library loaded directly by a game is not normally registered that way. Running regsvr32 against it can produce another error without repairing the installation. Microsoft describes the registration requirement in its DllRegisterServer documentation.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading this file from an arbitrary DLL site is risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be from a different game release, or simply fail because a dependency is missing. Public records also disagree about metadata such as version, size, and hashes, so those values are not a reliable way to select a replacement.

Use the game’s official launcher, official installation media, and Microsoft’s official runtime downloads instead. If the game’s own installer cannot restore the file, troubleshoot the installation or security software rather than substituting an unknown binary.
