What this file actually does
The GFSDK_ShadowLib name points to a graphics library used for shadow rendering. Public NVIDIA GameWorks material identifies a GFSDK Shadow Lib, and the file appears in current GTA V Legacy depot manifests beside files such as GTA5.exe, GFSDK_TXAA.win64.dll, and GPUPerfAPIDX11-x64.dll.

This is an application DLL. It normally belongs in the GTA V installation folder, beside the game executable. It is not known to be a file that Windows installs into either of these locations:

The win64 suffix indicates a 64-bit build. A 32-bit substitute is not an appropriate replacement.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes the complete grand Theft Auto V story experience
The file may also be reported by FiveM or a modded GTA V setup because those environments load files from the underlying GTA V installation. The exact copy required depends on the game build and installation source, so there is no universal version, size, hash, or release date that should be used to identify it.
Causes by symptom
| Symptom | What it usually means | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The execution of code cannot proceed because GFSDK_ShadowLib.win64.dll was not found” | The file is missing, quarantined, or outside the expected game directory | Verify GTA V files |
| “Could not load dependent module … Error code was 126” | Windows found the requested module or tried to load it, but a dependency could not be loaded | Verify the game, then repair runtimes |
| “Could not load dependent module … Error code was 127” | A required procedure or dependency could not be resolved | Verify files and investigate dependencies |
| The file is visible but the game still fails | Another DLL, runtime, or compatible export may be missing | Use launcher logs or dependency analysis |
| The error began after installing a mod or repack | Files may be mismatched, altered, or incomplete | Restore a clean official installation |
| The file returns after repair, then disappears | Antivirus or another security control may be removing it | Check Protection History |
Error codes 126 and 127 do not, by themselves, identify the missing dependency. They also do not prove that copying GFSDK_ShadowLib.win64.dll again will solve the problem.
Fix GTA V by verifying its files
This is the most likely solution because the file is a private GTA V asset. Verification compares the installation with the platform’s known files and downloads or replaces damaged files without requiring you to find the DLL manually.
Close GTA V, FiveM, and any mod manager before starting. Then use the launcher that owns the installation.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher and sign in.
- Select Settings.
- Under My installed games, select Grand Theft Auto V.
- Select Verify Integrity.
- Wait for the scan and repair to finish.
- Restart the launcher and start GTA V without mods.
A successful repair normally reports that verification is complete and may download replacement files. If the game starts afterward, the missing or damaged file was the cause.
If verification finishes successfully but the same message remains, confirm that you repaired the same GTA V folder used by the shortcut or FiveM. Multiple installations on different drives are a common source of confusion. Remove third-party modifications temporarily and verify again.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Grand Theft Auto V and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow Steam to download any files it reports as missing or corrupt.
- Launch the unmodified game once before starting FiveM.
Steam may report that some files failed to validate because of files created by settings, overlays, or modifications. If it repeatedly replaces the same file, check antivirus history and remove mods from the game directory before running verification again.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find GTA V and select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the scan to complete, then launch the game from Epic.
If the launcher cannot repair the installation, check the drive for free space and make sure the account has permission to write to the game folder. A full drive or a failed storage device can make a repair appear to finish while leaving files incomplete.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Defender or another antivirus product may have removed the file. This is especially possible after installing a modified launcher, cracked copy, repack, or unofficial mod.
To check Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- Open an entry that refers to the GTA V folder.
- Check the file path and detection details before taking action.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from a legitimate Rockstar, Steam, or Epic installation.
- The path is the expected GTA V directory.
- The launcher’s verification process identifies the file as required.
- You have not obtained the file from a DLL download site.
If the file was restored, verify GTA V again and then start the game. If Defender removes it again, do not repeatedly restore it blindly. Update Windows Security, scan the complete installation, remove unofficial modifications, and investigate the detection. A generic filename is not proof that a file is safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepair Visual C++ when the loader reports a dependency
GFSDK_ShadowLib.win64.dll is not itself the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. However, the game or one of its graphics dependencies may require the current Microsoft v14 runtime.
Rank #2
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
Install or repair both architectures because a 64-bit game can use supporting 32-bit launcher components:
- Download the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages:
- x64 Visual C++ Redistributable
- x86 Visual C++ Redistributable
- Run the x64 installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or Install if it is absent.
- Repeat with the x86 installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify GTA V files again and test the game.
Do not install an old “Visual C++ 2015 DLL” package from an unofficial source. Microsoft’s supported v14 runtime is shared by applications built with recent Visual Studio versions, but repairing it will not recreate a missing private GTA V file if the game installation itself is damaged.
Install legacy DirectX components for older game dependencies
Windows includes its modern DirectX core, but older games may still need optional legacy components such as D3DX or XAudio files. Installing the Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime can restore those older components without replacing the DirectX core in Windows.
- Download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Allow it to install missing legacy components.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify GTA V and test it without mods.
This is useful when the error mentions another legacy DirectX DLL or when dependency analysis identifies one. It is not a direct replacement for GFSDK_ShadowLib.win64.dll.
Do not enable random Windows Features as a substitute for repairing the game. Optional features such as legacy components should be installed only when the game or its dependency information indicates that they are required.
Update the graphics driver
A graphics driver normally does not supply GFSDK_ShadowLib.win64.dll, but a damaged or incompatible driver can cause GTA V to fail during graphics initialization after the DLL is loaded.
Through Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
For the newest driver, use the graphics adapter manufacturer’s official support page rather than a third-party driver site. Select the correct Windows version and 64-bit package, install it, and restart.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which drivers are stale: its free scan identifies driver issues, while driver installation through the full version handles the update. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling GTA V remains the definitive fix for a missing game DLL.
Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They will not normally recreate a private GTA V DLL, so use them when Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms, applications fail broadly, or system files are damaged.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
- Verify GTA V again.
DISM should be run before SFC because SFC may need the component store repaired first. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart and run it again, then check Windows Update and storage health.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual diagnosis less repetitive by showing what its free scan finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is not required for this error, and it does not replace repairing the GTA V installation that owns the DLL.

If the file exists but still will not load
A visible DLL does not guarantee that Windows can load it. The error may identify the first module in a failed chain while the actual problem is a dependency.
Check the following in order:
- Confirm the path. The file should be in the active GTA V installation directory, near
GTA5.exe, not merely somewhere else on the drive. - Check the architecture.
win64requires a compatible 64-bit game environment. Do not replace it with a 32-bit DLL. - Remove modifications. Temporarily move ASI loaders, graphics injectors, reshade files, script mods, and altered launchers out of the game directory.
- Run the launcher normally. Start with standard permissions first. If the launcher cannot access the folder, inspect the folder’s Security permissions and drive health.
- Review launcher logs. Look for the module named after the error code. A dependency-analysis utility can also show which imported DLL is absent or which procedure cannot be resolved.
- Repair the identified dependency. Use the game’s verification process, Microsoft Visual C++ packages, or the legacy DirectX runtime as appropriate.
- Check the active installation. FiveM may point to a different GTA V folder than the Rockstar, Steam, or Epic shortcut.
A damaged executable, incorrect file version, or mismatched set of game files can produce the same symptom. Different GTA V builds may require different private DLL versions, so replacing one file from another installation can make the mismatch worse.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why System32 and regsvr32 are wrong fixes
Do not copy this file into System32, SysWOW64, or unrelated application folders. Windows searches an unpackaged application’s directory early in the DLL search order, which is why a private game DLL normally belongs beside the game executable. Copying it globally can create version conflicts and increase DLL hijacking risk.

Do not run:
regsvr32 GFSDK_ShadowLib.win64.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. A private graphics library is not normally a self-registering COM server, so registration will not repair its game dependencies.

FiveM and mods add another layer between the launcher and the game files. A mod may expect a different GTA V build, alter the search path, or include an incompatible graphics component.
Use this sequence:
- Start the clean GTA V installation from its official launcher.
- Verify the files.
- Remove or disable mods and injectors.
- Start FiveM only after the base game works.
- Reinstall or update the mod that introduced the failure.
- Clear FiveM’s cache only according to its current support instructions if the base game is confirmed healthy.
Cracks, repacks, and unofficial launchers cannot be reliably repaired with official verification. Restore a clean installation from Rockstar, Steam, or Epic instead. If verification repeatedly succeeds but the file disappears, inspect antivirus logs, ransomware protection, disk errors, and the possibility that a different installation directory is being repaired.
Last resort: reinstall GTA V
Reinstall when verification cannot restore the file, the installation contains extensive modifications, or the launcher reports repeated write failures.
Before uninstalling, back up legitimate save data and note the installation location. Uninstall GTA V through its owning launcher, restart Windows, remove only leftover game files that you recognize, and install again from the official platform. Launch the clean game once before restoring mods.

FAQ
Is gfsdk_shadowlib.win64.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows-owned component. It is a private 64-bit application DLL associated most strongly with GTA V.
Is it part of Visual C++ 2015?
No. Visual C++ may be a dependency in some environments, but this DLL is not the Visual C++ Redistributable itself.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Random DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched build, and the missing file may only be a symptom of a damaged installation. Verify or reinstall GTA V through its legitimate launcher.
Why does error 126 appear when the file is present?
Error 126 commonly means Windows could not load a dependency in the chain. The named DLL may be present while another required module is missing or incompatible.
Do I need to register the DLL?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command and is not appropriate for this private graphics library.
Will updating my graphics driver fix it?
Only if the failure involves graphics initialization or a damaged driver. A driver update does not normally restore the missing game file; launcher verification does that.
What is the safest fix?
Close the game, remove unofficial modifications, verify the GTA V files through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic, and reinstall from that platform if verification cannot repair the installation.
