gfsdk_ssao_d3d12.win64.dll is a 64-bit NVIDIA GameWorks graphics library normally bundled with a particular game, not with Windows. The safest fix is to identify the game that requested it, verify or repair that game’s files, and reinstall it from its official launcher if verification cannot restore the file.
What this file actually does
The filename identifies NVIDIA’s GFSDK SSAO implementation for Direct3D 12. SSAO, or screen-space ambient occlusion, is a rendering technique that adds shading where surfaces meet, helping objects appear grounded and giving scenes more depth.

NVIDIA’s GameWorks interfaces include D3D12-specific GFSDK SSAO functions and context objects. The .win64 portion indicates a 64-bit Windows build. The exact copy required by a game must still come from that game because different titles can ship different builds and supporting files.
This is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A normal DirectX system file
- Part of the NVIDIA display-driver package
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file
- A file that should ordinarily be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64
The library is normally placed in the game’s own folder or one of its runtime subfolders. Public module traces have associated this filename with games including DEATHLOOP and F1 2020, but that does not prove every installation using the file belongs to either game.

Your first job is to determine which executable requested it. Check the title in the error window, the shortcut you launched, and the game’s installation folder. You can also open Event Viewer with eventvwr, then check Windows Logs → Application for an error recorded at the time the game failed.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The DLL is missing or was not found after an update | The update was interrupted or removed a game file | Verify the game files, then rerun the update |
| The error appeared after antivirus detection | Windows Security quarantined the library | Check Protection history before reinstalling |
| “The specified module could not be found” while the DLL is visible | A dependency of the DLL is missing | Check the complete error and repair required runtimes |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or an invalid-image error | Wrong, damaged, or incompatible DLL | Remove the substitute and verify the exact game installation |
| The game is installed on another drive | Shortcut or launcher points to the wrong copy | Start the game from the correct launcher installation |
| The issue began after installing mods | A mod replaced or removed game files | Remove unsupported modifications and verify files |
| Several games show DirectX failures | Driver, Windows, or hardware-level graphics problem | Update the driver and investigate broader system errors |
Fix the game installation first
This is the most likely solution because the file belongs to the game that installed it.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam may download the missing library or replace a corrupted copy. A verification pass can also report that files were reacquired without explaining every individual file.
If verification completes but the error remains, restart Windows and run the game without mods, injectors, or unsupported overlays. Then check whether the shortcut launches the same Steam installation that you verified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOther launchers
Most PC game launchers provide a similar repair command:
- Open the launcher that installed the game.
- Open your library.
- Select the game’s menu button, usually shown as three dots or a gear.
- Choose Manage, Properties, Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair.
- Allow the launcher to replace damaged or missing content.
- Launch the game from that same launcher.
The wording varies between launchers, but the purpose is the same: compare the installed game against the publisher’s distribution and restore the original files.
If the launcher has no repair function, uninstall the game through the launcher or Windows, restart the computer, and install it again from the official game distribution. Avoid restoring the DLL from a different computer or another game.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a game library after an update changes its contents or after a detection is triggered. Do not immediately disable protection or download a replacement DLL.
To inspect Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review entries created when the game stopped launching.
- Open a relevant entry and inspect its file path and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if it is inside the legitimate game installation and the game came from an official source.
After restoring a file, return to the game launcher and run verification. This ensures that the restored copy matches the game’s expected files.
If Defender repeatedly quarantines the same library, do not keep disabling protection. Scan the game folder and the wider system, reinstall the game from its official source, and contact the game publisher if the clean installation is detected again.
Check whether the error names a dependency
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that gfsdk_ssao_d3d12.win64.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when the named DLL exists but another library it needs cannot be loaded.
Read the complete error carefully. Look for additional names such as:
d3d12.dllVCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dll- A graphics-driver DLL
- Another file from the game’s installation
Do not replace the NVIDIA library with a similarly named D3D11 file. A 32-bit DLL also cannot substitute for the 64-bit build expected by a 64-bit game.
Repair the Visual C++ runtime when named
Install or repair Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ v14 Redistributable only when the error also points to a Microsoft runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.
- Download the official x64 package from Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again and launch it.
This runtime does not replace gfsdk_ssao_d3d12.win64.dll. It only supplies Microsoft runtime components that the game or its graphics libraries may require.
Check Direct3D 12 and Windows updates
There is no normal Windows Features checkbox that installs this NVIDIA game library, and enabling a random legacy feature will not restore it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For Direct3D-related failures:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the game’s file verification again.
If the game reports a Direct3D 12 problem rather than only a missing game DLL, press Windows + R, type dxdiag, and press Enter. On the System and Display tabs, review the DirectX version, graphics device, and driver information. dxdiag is a diagnostic tool; it does not reinstall the missing game file.

Repair broader Windows corruption
Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows wider problems, including damaged system components, update failures, or multiple unrelated applications failing. These tools normally repair protected Windows files, not a third-party DLL bundled with a game.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands complete.
- Test the game again.
Successful completion means Windows found no remaining repair problem or repaired protected components. It does not guarantee that the game DLL will reappear. If the file is still missing, return to the launcher’s verification or reinstall process.
If you repeatedly run SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the game remains the definitive fix for this game-bundled library.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUpdate the graphics driver only for wider graphics failures
A graphics-driver update is not the usual direct fix for one missing gfsdk_ssao_d3d12.win64.dll. It becomes relevant when other games also fail, Direct3D stops initializing, the driver has recently crashed, or Device Manager reports a graphics-device problem.
Check Device Manager
- Press
Windows+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Device status message under General.
- Open the Driver tab to review driver details.
If the adapter has a warning icon, use Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the graphics-card manufacturer. Restart Windows afterward.
For a clean reinstall, download the correct driver from the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel support channel for your graphics hardware, run its installer, and select the clean-install option when offered. Do not expect this process to recreate a game-bundled GameWorks file.
If hunting through driver versions and checking which of several components is stale is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing or reinstalling the affected game.
Do not download or register the DLL manually
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong game build, or a 32-bit copy that cannot load into a 64-bit process. Even a file with the exact same name may require different dependencies and may not match the game’s executable.
Use these sources instead:
- The official game launcher’s verification or repair feature
- The game publisher’s official installer
- The original installation media or account library
- Microsoft’s official runtime packages when the error names a Microsoft dependency
Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or another global Windows directory. That can hide the real installation problem and cause a different program to load an incompatible copy.
regsvr32 is also not the normal repair method. It is intended for DLLs that implement the registration interfaces expected by Windows, including DllRegisterServer. There is no established reason to register this ordinary game-rendering library. Running commands such as these is therefore not a solution:
regsvr32 gfsdk_ssao_d3d12.win64.dll
If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that reflects the wrong repair method, not a missing Windows feature.

If verification says the files are valid
Work through this order:
- Confirm the error names the same game you verified.
- Check the game’s actual installation path in the launcher.
- Remove unsupported mods, reshade injectors, and overlays.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Repair the Visual C++ runtime only if its DLLs are also named.
- Restart the launcher and Windows.
- Reinstall the game into a new library folder if the original installation may be damaged.
- Check the launcher logs for a blocked, redirected, or incomplete update.
- Contact the game publisher with the exact error, executable name, installation path, launcher verification result, and antivirus action.
System Restore is a later option when the failure began immediately after a system change and normal repair steps failed. It can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files, but it should not be the first response to one missing game file.
FAQ
Is gfsdk_ssao_d3d12.win64.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. It is a third-party game-rendering library associated with NVIDIA GameWorks and normally supplied by the game that uses it.
Is it part of the NVIDIA display driver?
Not normally. Updating the display driver may help broader graphics problems, but it does not normally restore this game-bundled library.
Which game uses this DLL?
The error itself or the executable path should identify the requesting game. Public traces have shown the file in DEATHLOOP and F1 2020, but you should repair the exact game installed on your computer rather than assume a filename identifies one universal title.
Does the .win64 name prove my game is 64-bit?
It identifies a 64-bit Windows build of the library. The game’s executable and the exact library build still need to match. A 32-bit replacement is not a valid substitute.
Can SFC restore this file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. Use the game launcher or the game’s official installer to restore this third-party file.
What if the DLL exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency. Check for additional Direct3D, Visual C++, or driver DLL names, then repair the relevant component instead of replacing the NVIDIA library.
Should I use System Restore?
Only after the game repair, quarantine check, dependency checks, and broader Windows diagnostics fail, especially when the issue began immediately after a system change.
