There is no single best armor set for every fight in Ghost of Tsushima. Samurai Clan Armor is a strong early choice for surviving direct combat, while other sets specialize in stealth, archery, stagger damage, Ghost Weapons, exploration, or precise timing. This ranking weighs usefulness across ordinary encounters, survivability, ease of use, and when each set becomes available; it is a practical guide, not an official tier list.
How to choose armor in Ghost of Tsushima
Armor changes gameplay as well as Jin’s appearance: sets provide different perks, can be upgraded to strengthen their effects, and can be recolored with dyes. The best choice depends on what you are doing and how you like to fight. PlayStation creative director Jason Connell described the intended freedom as playing encounters in a preferred style and wearing whichever armor you prefer, including mixing armor components. PlayStation’s developer Q&A also confirms that helmets and body elements can be interchanged.

The ranking below favors sets that are broadly useful in combat, but a lower-ranked set may be the better pick for a specific build. The campaign list includes eleven entries, from armor with no combat perks to specialized exploration gear. New Game+ and Iki Island rewards are separated afterward so their access requirements are clear.

- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
- The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
- Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
- Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
- A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.
Samurai Clan Armor is an excellent early answer to direct fights: it reduces incoming damage, increases health, and grants Resolve when Jin takes damage. Those benefits make it forgiving while you learn enemy attacks and build resources in a crowded encounter.
Trade-off: Its strengths are defensive, so it is less tailored than dedicated stealth, archery, or Ghost Weapon sets.
2. Sakai Clan Armor — best for Standoffs and melee
Get it: Complete the main story quest “Ghosts from the Past.”
This set raises health and melee damage, increases the number of enemies Jin can kill in a Standoff, and can terrify enemies after a Standoff victory. It is a strong all-round choice for players who like opening encounters with a challenge and continuing with direct sword combat.

Trade-off: Standoffs are not available in every fight, so part of the set’s appeal depends on the encounter.
3. Gosaku’s Armor — best for stagger and aggressive healing
Get it: Complete the Mythic Tale “The Unbreakable Gosaku.”
Gosaku’s Armor increases health and stagger damage. Killing a staggered enemy restores health, rewarding a forceful approach that breaks defenses and presses the advantage. It suits players who prefer to keep attacking rather than rely on stealth or ranged damage.
Trade-off: Its healing perk depends on staggering and then defeating enemies; it is not a general-purpose substitute for avoiding damage.
4. Ghost Armor — best for stealth and Ghost Stance
Get it: Complete the main story quest “From the Darkness.”
Ghost Armor slows enemy detection, reduces the number of kills needed to enter Ghost Stance, and gives kills a chance to terrify nearby enemies. It supports a stealth-first approach that can turn a string of takedowns into a wider disruption.

Trade-off: Its value depends on building kills without being hit, so it is less dependable for a player who prefers prolonged face-to-face combat.
5. Kensei Armor — best for Resolve and Ghost Weapons
Get it: Complete the Mythic Tale “The Six Blades of Kojiro.”
Kensei Armor increases Resolve and Ghost Weapon damage. Hitting an enemy with a Ghost Weapon also weakens that enemy’s offense and defense, making the set a natural fit for a build that spends resources on tools and follows up with attacks.
Trade-off: The Ghost Weapon effects do not help in one-on-one boss fights, which makes this a more specialized pick than its broad perk list might suggest.
6. Tadayori’s Armor — best for bow-focused play
Get it: Complete the Mythic Tale “The Legend of Tadayori.”
This set speeds bow nocking and reload, extends Concentration, and partly restores Concentration on headshots. Accurate archers can use that extra aiming time to land more headshots and keep pressure on enemies from range.
Trade-off: Its advantages require a bow, arrows, and accurate ranged play; they contribute little to a sword-focused approach.
7. Ronin Attire — best for stealth with a melee bonus
Get it: Complete the main story mission “Blood on the Grass.”
Ronin Attire slows enemy detection and increases melee damage. While crouched in grass, Jin is detected more slowly after leaving it, which can help players move between cover and take advantage of an opening.
Trade-off: It has no defensive perks, so a mistake in a direct fight can be costly.

8. Mongol Commander’s Armor — best for approaching Mongol patrols
Get it: Complete the Act III tale “Fit for a Khan.”
The armor increases health, reduces damage, and disguises Jin so Mongols detect him more slowly outside combat. That combination is useful when approaching Mongol groups before a fight begins.
Trade-off: The disguise benefit is specific to Mongols and applies outside combat. The set cannot be upgraded.
9. Traveller’s Attire — best for exploration and collectibles
Get it: Obtain it from the first open-world merchant.

10. Fundoshi — best for silent movement

Trade-off: It is a specialized reward for completing all Hot Springs and is not a combat-focused set.

Broken Armor has no perks and is described in the guide as broken beyond repair. Keep it for a deliberate challenge or an appearance preference, not for a gameplay advantage.

Deadly Rival’s Attire — best New Game+ general-purpose option

Trade-off: It cannot be upgraded.
Archery Master’s Attire — best New Game+ archer
Get it: Buy it from Baku the Voiceless in New Game+ for 25 Ghost Flowers.
Archery Master’s Attire has bow, Concentration, and headshot perks similar to Tadayori’s Armor, with stronger bonuses according to the guide. It is a natural New Game+ choice for an archer who wants to build around those effects.
Trade-off: Compare it with fully upgraded Tadayori’s Armor for your own build; both serve the ranged-play niche, and the guide does not provide quantified performance figures for a direct comparison.
Iki Island armor
Sarugami Armor — best for players who can land perfect parries and dodges
Get it: Complete the Iki Island Mythic Tale “The Legend of Black Hand Riku.” Iki Island is included with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PS4 and PS5, as stated in PlayStation’s Director’s Cut announcement.

Can you mix armor pieces?
Yes. PlayStation’s developer Q&A says players can interchange helmets and body elements, and Connell emphasized that players are free to wear whichever armor they prefer and mix pieces from different sets. That means you can make appearance choices without treating the ranking as a rule that dictates one fixed outfit.
