GRID 2 was free to play on Steam for a limited free weekend in October 2014. That promotion has ended; it was not a permanent free-to-play release. SteamDB currently reports the game as retired and unavailable in the Steam store, though that is a third-party status report, not a Valve notice.
Why GRID 2 was free on Steam
Codemasters announced a “GRID 2 Free Weekend” on October 17, 2014. The announcement described temporary access to the game and separate discounts for players who wanted to buy it. A free weekend lets players try a game during a defined promotion; it does not make the game free to keep or establish a free-to-play release.

Can you claim GRID 2 for free now?
SteamDB’s GRID 2 listing currently reports the game as retired and no longer available on the Steam store. SteamDB is a third-party tracker, and the available evidence does not establish an account- or region-specific result from Valve. Check the Steam store directly for the current listing in your region before relying on any availability claim.
A past free weekend, an existing copy in someone’s library, and the ability to claim a new copy are different things. The 2014 promotion confirms the first; it does not show that new accounts can claim the game today.

Activation, offline play, and system requirements
The official GRID 2 PC manual says activation requires an internet connection and a free Steam account. It also states, “Once activated you can play GRID 2 whilst offline.” That describes offline play after activation; it does not confirm that the game’s online services or multiplayer features currently work.
