You can play two-player story missions, defend territory in four-player Survival, tackle a four-player Raid, or race another team through PvE waves in Rivals. Your class and gear shape how you contribute, while higher-difficulty missions offer stronger gear and progression.
What is Legends mode in Ghost of Tsushima?
Legends is a cooperative multiplayer experience inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology. Its story frame comes from Gyozen the Storyteller: the missions follow four warriors featured in tales told by Tsushima’s people, rather than Jin or his companions. Sucker Punch senior game designer Darren Bridges described its intent this way: “We designed Legends to be an exclusively cooperative gameplay experience.” PlayStation.Blog’s 2020 announcement introduced the mode.
Legends has its own missions, classes, and gear progression. It is not a PvP shooter: Rivals places two teams in a race and lets them interfere with each other, but both teams fight PvE enemy waves.
What are the Legends game modes?
The four modes differ in team size, objective, and how much coordination they call for. PlayStation’s mode overview lists the following:

Story and Survival can be more forgiving of players acting independently than the Raid, according to Bridges, who described himself as lead co-op designer. The Raid’s puzzles and combat make coordination more consequential; his escape-room comparison is a description of its design, not an official difficulty rating. Which class should you choose?
Legends has four classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, and Assassin. PlayStation presents these as broad play-style distinctions, not fixed party jobs. Parties can mix classes freely or bring multiple players of the same class, as noted in PlayStation.Blog’s launch tips.

Choose based on the kind of combat you enjoy and the needs of your group, rather than assuming a party must contain one of each class.
How do gear and progression work?
Completing missions unlocks gear and cosmetics. Gear power is measured as Ki: higher-difficulty missions can reward more powerful and rarer gear, which can raise your Ki. PlayStation lists Bronze, Silver, and Gold difficulties, as well as weekly Nightmare challenges with special modifiers.

Experience unlocks techniques, perks, and class abilities. Within a class, you can mix the abilities you have unlocked. Honor, Essence, and Blessing are in-game resources used for skill-tree unlocks, rerolling daily challenges, and reforging gear. The PlayStation Store listing also documents Gear Mastery challenges and gear upgrades up to level 120; that is a feature description, not a recommendation that every player needs a particular build.

There are two relevant ways to get the content: Legends access for owners of Ghost of Tsushima, and the standalone multiplayer-only Legends product. PlayStation says owners of another version of Ghost of Tsushima can access Legends content and updates at no additional charge. The standalone product does not include the single-player campaign. Check the PlayStation Store listing for the product and edition details that apply to your account and region.

- Want multiplayer only? The standalone Legends product includes online multiplayer, not the campaign.
- Want the campaign as well? Choose a full Ghost of Tsushima edition that includes the single-player game and Legends.
- Playing online? PlayStation states that an internet connection and PlayStation Plus are required to download and play Legends.
PS4 and PS5 players can play together, and Legends progression carries over between PS4 and PS5, according to the official overview and Store listing. The Plus requirement is separate from owning the game or standalone product.
