Then prioritize dodging his red-glint attacks and their follow-ups, use Spirit attacks to answer those cues, and conserve quickfire interruptions because Takezo adapts after each weapon has interrupted him a couple of times. The blizzard that begins after the first blade lock makes defensive mistakes more costly.
Unlock Takezo’s summit duel
Defeat all five Takezo disciples. This earns Takezo’s Dual Slash technique and starts The Five Teachings; the summit encounter becomes available once you have acquired that quest. VULKK’s guide also says you need all five Takezo charms for Takezo to appear at Mount Yōtei. You can change the charms after the fight begins.

Prepare for a punishing duel
Take time to strengthen Atsu before climbing. VULKK recommends upgrading your armor and weapons, raising Spirit at Bamboo Strikes, increasing health at Hot Springs, and improving your chosen weapon and relevant Onryo abilities. These are ways to reduce the fight’s difficulty, not a guaranteed winning build or official minimum requirement.
Choose equipment for your play style
VULKK lists Bounty Master Armor, Armor of the Undying, and Taro’s Armor as possible choices. Its guide describes Bounty Master as improving perfect-parry opportunities and follow-up damage; other armor may fit a more defensive preference. The available guidance does not establish one universally best set, so choose based on the approach you can execute reliably.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Read the red-glint cue and keep dodging
When Takezo’s attack flashes red, dodge rather than trying to block it. Do not rush back in after a single evade: his disarming strikes can follow a red-glint attack, so keep dodging until the full sequence ends. Attack during the opening that follows, rather than trading blows while he is still moving.
Spirit attacks are a useful response to his glint attacks, according to VULKK’s guide. Use them when they help you interrupt or safely answer the sequence, rather than assuming every red-glint move has the same timing or a fixed punish window.
Rank #2
- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Use interruptions before Takezo adapts
Quickfire weapons can interrupt Takezo, but the guide reports that each type works only a couple of times before he adapts. Avoid building your whole strategy around repeatedly interrupting him with one tool. Use other interruption options where available, and consider spending remaining quickfire ammunition for damage once that weapon stops reliably disrupting his attacks.
Adjust when the blizzard begins
After the first blade lock, a blizzard starts and inflicts damage. From that point, defensive errors carry an added cost: keep your focus on Takezo’s attack cues, finish dodging his sequences, and take openings only when they are clear. The weather shift is a reason to be more disciplined, not to rush the duel.

- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.

- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
Expect retries
Takezo is intended as an ultimate battle after Atsu’s journey. In a PlayStation interview, Sucker Punch creative director Jason Connell called him “the hardest challenge in the entire game.” A failed attempt is not evidence that you need a particular armor set; use each retry to learn which attacks you are misreading and when you are committing before a sequence ends.
