Ghost of Tsushima Gave Sucker Punch the Spotlight It Always Deserved

Sucker Punch had a PlayStation history before Ghost of Tsushima. The samurai adventure brought the studio wider attention through its design, audience recognition and first PC release.

Ghost of Tsushima did not introduce Sucker Punch Productions to players; it brought a studio with a long PlayStation history to a much wider audience. The open-world samurai adventure carried the Seattle developer beyond its familiar Sly Cooper and inFamous identities, earned major recognition from PlayStation players, and became the first Sucker Punch game released on PC.

Sucker Punch had built its reputation long before Tsushima

PlayStation describes Sucker Punch as a Seattle-based studio making games since 1997 and part of PlayStation Studios since 2011. Its official history spans Rocket: Robot on Wheels, the Sly Cooper series, inFamous, Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei (PlayStation studio history).

That record matters because “spotlight” should not be mistaken for discovery. In Sony’s 2011 acquisition announcement, the company called Sucker Punch a long-time partner and said Sly Cooper and inFamous had combined sales of more than seven million units worldwide by then. That figure belongs to those two franchises at that point in time, not to Ghost of Tsushima (Sony’s 2011 acquisition announcement).

The studio had already shown it could build distinct PlayStation series. Ghost of Tsushima represented a confident shift in setting and style: from stylized platforming and superhero action to a historical open-world adventure centered on a samurai facing the Mongol invasion of Tsushima.

What changed with Ghost of Tsushima

The scale of the new audience is visible in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s dated sales milestone: 9.73 million units globally as of July 15, 2022. It is a historical figure, not a current lifetime total (Sony Interactive Entertainment’s July 2022 sales announcement).

PlayStation’s reader-voted 2020 awards offered a different kind of recognition. Ghost of Tsushima won Gold for PS4 Game of the Year and Best Art Direction. PlayStation Blog reported more than 2.5 million votes across all award categories; that aggregate does not establish how many votes went to this game (PlayStation Blog’s 2020 awards results).

  • Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.

  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.

Those milestones help explain why the game became a defining moment for Sucker Punch. Sales show its reach, while the awards show recognition from PlayStation’s reader poll. Neither means the studio had been overlooked by everyone before 2020; they mark the increased visibility of a developer whose earlier work had already found a substantial audience.

How wind became both atmosphere and guidance

One of the game’s most recognizable ideas grew from an artistic goal. In a May 2020 developer Q&A, art director Jason Connell said the team wanted to incorporate wind and movement into the visual direction. The developers later found that the wind could also guide players toward objectives and optional collectibles, joining environmental storytelling to practical navigation (Sucker Punch’s developer Q&A on PlayStation Blog).

Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Rather than constantly pointing the player toward a marker, the game lets the landscape do more of the directing. The result is a useful fit for a story about traveling across an island: exploration remains part of the experience, while the world itself can signal where to go.

One story for Jin, freedom in how you fight

Sucker Punch developers said the game does not use a karma system or make players choose between separate samurai and Ghost story paths. Nate Fox described a single journey for Jin, with freedom to use different encounter styles and mix armor pieces. That distinction keeps the character arc authored while leaving room for players to decide how they approach combat.

The same Q&A described combat as lethal for both Jin and his enemies, with difficulty affecting enemy aggression rather than simply raising enemy health. This is the developers’ explanation of the design in 2020, not a guarantee that every encounter plays out identically or an independent test of the game’s balance.

The PC release took Sucker Punch beyond console

On March 6, 2024, PlayStation Blog announced that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut would arrive on PC on May 16, 2024. The announcement called it the first Sucker Punch title to come to PC and said Nixxes adapted the studio’s in-house engine for PC features. The Director’s Cut includes the main game, the Iki Island expansion and the cooperative Legends mode (PlayStation Blog’s PC announcement).

For a studio whose earlier games had been console-exclusive, this was a meaningful widening of the audience. Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming said of the porting partnership: “We’re proud to announce that our friends and partners over at Nixxes are bringing Ghost of Tsushima to PC! This is a first for Sucker Punch – all our previous work is console-exclusive, so we are excited about all this and Nixxes was the right team to do this project. With them on board, we knew the results would be nothing short of amazing! Now excuse me as I go order a Super Ultra Wide monitor!”

What PC players should know

The current PlayStation PC page lists Steam and Epic purchase links, graphics settings for a wide range of hardware, upscaling and frame-generation support, and ultrawide and triple-monitor options. The page’s feature and hardware requirements vary by PC, display and graphics card, so check its current requirements for a particular setup (PlayStation’s Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PC page).

  • A PlayStation account is required for Legends online multiplayer and the PlayStation overlay on PC.
  • A controller is not required to play. A wired DualSense connection is needed to access the controller’s full range of features.

Why the spotlight fits

Ghost of Tsushima gave Sucker Punch a new scale of visibility without erasing what came before. The studio’s history in platforming and superhero action supplied the foundation; its shift to a samurai epic produced a game that reached 9.73 million global sales by July 2022, earned two Gold awards in PlayStation’s 2020 reader poll and opened a new platform for the studio’s work in 2024. Calling that spotlight “deserved” is an interpretation, but it rests on a clear record of creative evolution and audience reach.
